Review: 10311 Orchid

The Adults Welcome botanical collection was launched last year and, if the length of time they were initially out of stock at LEGO.com is anything to go by, they have been a resounding success.

Two more will be released on 1st May, including 10311 Orchid, and I am certain that they will be just as popular: both are very attractive, realistic and reasonably priced.

Digs for Figs, purveyor of fine minifigure display cases, is holding a building competition to win one of its cabinets worth £99. We reviewed them back in 2019, and I now have three of them on my office wall holding series 1-21 collectable minifigures.

They come with seven shelves that can hold around 16 figures each, or a long mini-scene, like those shown in the photo.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning one is to build a 6x64 stud scene showcasing your favourite minifigs.

Build Together: more sets added

You may recall that late last year a new feature called Build Together was added to the Instruction Plus app, which facilitates building sets collaboratively.

We tested it with one of the sets that was included in the pilot programme (10270 Bookshop) and had great fun doing so.

The app has just been updated: 16 more sets have been added, and the algorithm has been improved, incorporating feedback from beta testers and fan media.

If you have any of the sets listed after the break, and willing volunteers to build with, I encourage you to give it a go. It provides a very different and engaging building experience, and it's a great group activity.

More botanical sets blooming soon

LEGO has published a teaser on social media that implies that new botanical sets will be launched on 1st May.

Official details are scant although unfortunately pictures of the sets in question have leaked, so we already know what they are. We won't spoil the surprise, though, and I thank you for not doing so in the comments.

Review: 75342 Republic Fighter Tank

While essential characters and notable vehicles remain paramount, LEGO Star Wars sometimes features lesser-known subjects. 75342 Republic Fighter Tank definitely satisfies that need, since these Clone Trooper minifigures originate from Hasbro action figures!

Among varied possibilities, selecting the purple 187th Legion seems decidedly strange, although the minifigures look excellent. Moreover, an exclusive version of Mace Windu is included, while this rendition of the tank introduces some unique features, deviating from 7679 Republic Fighter Tank and 75182 Republic Fighter Tank.

Next GWP revealed

Another gift with purchase for April has been revealed by a Taiwanese certified store.

40529 Children's Amusement Park will be available at LEGO.com from the 15th to the 30th of April with an as yet unknown spend threshold.

Some sites are reporting that it's being released to celebrate Children's day, but as far as I can tell the official UN event takes place on 20th November, so clearly that's not the case. Maybe it's signalling the release of a new fairground ride this year.

Review: 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor

Countless interesting Star Wars scenes provide potential inspiration for the Diorama Collection and the heroes' dramatic escape from the trash compactor certainly seems appropriate for this diorama format, which emphasises marvellous accuracy and detail.

Furthermore, this famous scene has previously been restricted to appearances in 10188 Death Star and 75159 Death Star. 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor therefore appears appealing, particularly given the impressive selection of new minifigures. This cost is problematic though, which has become unfortunately common.

Summer Harry Potter range officially revealed!

Most are inspired by the later Harry Potter films, so feature scenes and characters which have not been represented in LEGO before.

London's Leicester Square store set to become world's largest once more

When the Leicester Square brand store opened in 2016 it was the biggest in the world, and it's set to regain that crown once more. Here's a press release about what's planned:

Ready, set, build: renovation will see LEGO Store Leicester Square become the world’s largest

The revamped store will be the first in the UK to debut the new ‘Retailtainment’ concept that blends physical and digital immersive play experiences in-store

The relaunch will take place in the summer holidays following a short closure for renovations from 26th June.

LEGO fans in London and the UK are in for a treat this year as the LEGO Group is today announcing it will be overhauling its Leicester Square store to make it the brand’s largest in the world. The overhaul planned for this year will see it reclaim this crown. What’s more, it’ll also be the first store in the UK to feature the LEGO Group’s new ‘Retailtainment’ concept.

6075 Wolfpack Tower: showcasing what can be done with one classic LEGO set

What I like most about classic LEGO is its versatility. One day a piece is used as a ray gun to protect an explorer against alien threats, the next day it becomes a torch in a haunted castle. One could definitely argue the same applies to LEGO today but since the number of specialised pieces and, even more so, of colours was way smaller in the past, you had no other choice but to be creative.

This versatility could not only be seen in the pieces but even in complete sets. What today has evolved into the separate Creator 3-in-1 theme, once was commonplace, with LEGO providing inspiration to build different models using the bricks of only one set. Inspiration, that is, in the form of just one picture per build on the back or the inside of the box. But thanks to the online AFOL community, it has become a lot easier to construct these alternates.

So let’s see just how much building fun you can have with a classic LEGO set that was released precisely thirty years ago. This article has everything you ever wanted to know about 6075 Wolfpack Tower, and then probably some more, too.

It also provides a quick and easy means to bookmark pages on the site for later retrieval. It's a feature that few people use, so I thought it would be worth reminding you about it.

It's also available when viewing on a small screen device, as I will show in this article.
