Botanical collection sets officially revealed

Posted by ,

Here's the press release for the two botanical sets that can be pre-ordered now at LEGO.com, with all the cringe-worthy talk of mindfulness and de-stressing removed:

The LEGO Group announces two stunning new additions to its Botanical Collection: an Orchid and a Succulents selection.

Perfect as a thoughtful gift for a plant lover or for adding the finishing interior design touches, the new sets are designed to provide an immersive building experience for adults that lets creativity bloom.

Reminder: Win a minifigure display case

Posted by ,
View image at Flickr

There are just 20 days remaining to get your entries in for this competition:

Digs for Figs, purveyor of fine minifigure display cases, is holding a building competition to win one of its cabinets worth £99. We reviewed them back in 2019, and I now have three of them on my office wall holding series 1-21 collectable minifigures.

They come with seven shelves that can hold around 16 figures each, or a long mini-scene, like those shown in the photo.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning one is to build a 6x64 stud scene showcasing your favourite minifigs.

You can find the full specification and details of how to enter after the break.

Build Together: more sets added

Posted by ,

You may recall that late last year a new feature called Build Together was added to the Instruction Plus app, which facilitates building sets collaboratively.

We tested it with one of the sets that was included in the pilot programme (10270 Bookshop) and had great fun doing so.

The app has just been updated: 16 more sets have been added, and the algorithm has been improved, incorporating feedback from beta testers and fan media.

If you have any of the sets listed after the break, and willing volunteers to build with, I encourage you to give it a go. It provides a very different and engaging building experience, and it's a great group activity.

More botanical sets blooming soon

Posted by ,

LEGO has published a teaser on social media that implies that new botanical sets will be launched on 1st May.

Official details are scant although unfortunately pictures of the sets in question have leaked, so we already know what they are. We won't spoil the surprise, though, and I thank you for not doing so in the comments.

Expect a full reveal later this week.

Children's Amusement Park

Another gift with purchase for April has been revealed by a Taiwanese certified store.

40529 Children's Amusement Park will be available at LEGO.com from the 15th to the 30th of April with an as yet unknown spend threshold.

Some sites are reporting that it's being released to celebrate Children's day, but as far as I can tell the official UN event takes place on 20th November, so clearly that's not the case. Maybe it's signalling the release of a new fairground ride this year.

When the Leicester Square brand store opened in 2016 it was the biggest in the world, and it's set to regain that crown once more. Here's a press release about what's planned:

Ready, set, build: renovation will see LEGO Store Leicester Square become the world’s largest

The revamped store will be the first in the UK to debut the new ‘Retailtainment’ concept that blends physical and digital immersive play experiences in-store

The relaunch will take place in the summer holidays following a short closure for renovations from 26th June.

LEGO fans in London and the UK are in for a treat this year as the LEGO Group is today announcing it will be overhauling its Leicester Square store to make it the brand’s largest in the world. The overhaul planned for this year will see it reclaim this crown. What’s more, it’ll also be the first store in the UK to feature the LEGO Group’s new ‘Retailtainment’ concept.

6075 Wolfpack Tower: showcasing what can be done with one classic LEGO set

Wolfpack Tower

This #ThrowbackThursday article has been contributed by WoutA:

What I like most about classic LEGO is its versatility. One day a piece is used as a ray gun to protect an explorer against alien threats, the next day it becomes a torch in a haunted castle. One could definitely argue the same applies to LEGO today but since the number of specialised pieces and, even more so, of colours was way smaller in the past, you had no other choice but to be creative.

This versatility could not only be seen in the pieces but even in complete sets. What today has evolved into the separate Creator 3-in-1 theme, once was commonplace, with LEGO providing inspiration to build different models using the bricks of only one set. Inspiration, that is, in the form of just one picture per build on the back or the inside of the box. But thanks to the online AFOL community, it has become a lot easier to construct these alternates.

So let’s see just how much building fun you can have with a classic LEGO set that was released precisely thirty years ago. This article has everything you ever wanted to know about 6075 Wolfpack Tower, and then probably some more, too.

Tutorial: My Menu

Posted by ,

The big red My Menu menu item at the top of the page (when viewing the site on a large screen) provides links to your content such as reviews, BrickLists, queries and so on.

It also provides a quick and easy means to bookmark pages on the site for later retrieval. It's a feature that few people use, so I thought it would be worth reminding you about it.

It's also available when viewing on a small screen device, as I will show in this article.

A history of Technic pins

Posted by ,

I first wrote a history of Technic pins in February 2019. Since its publication seven new ones have been introduced and three have been superceded, so I thought it would be worthwhile updating it.

The first Technic sets launched in 1977 came with just one type of pin; however, the very first 'Technic' pin produced predated them by some 7 years, and it wasn't made from plastic...

New LEGO Campus Architecture set being given to employees

LEGO Campus

Today is the grand opening of the People House part of the LEGO Campus in Billund, and employees there are being gifted an Architecture model of it.

Several have tweeted pictures of the 1,494-piece set 4000038 LEGO Campus, including designers James May and George Gilliatt, and another one has sent us this picture of it without a thumb in front of it.

It's the 9th Architecture-style model of a LEGO factory or campus (filed under LEGO Internal in the database) but the first to actually be branded Architecture. They are notoriously difficult to get hold of if you've not been given one, so expect this rather nice one to command ridiculous prices on the secondary market in the coming weeks.

I think it might also be the first non-18+ set to be in an 18+ style box.

Review: 40535 Iron Man

Posted by ,

Brick Sketches were launched during 2020 and the first batch are a rare example of sets that have had their price reduced, presumably as a result of low sales and poor perception of value for money.

Two more followed last year and two more will be released on April 1st, so the adjustment must have had the desired effect and for now they live on.

40535 Iron Man and 40536 Miles Morales introduce a new franchise to the theme and are both far more substantial than previous ones.

Review: 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car

Posted by ,

Surprisingly, it's been over 15 years since LEGO produced a licensed Technic Formula 1 car. The last one was 8674 Ferrari F1 Racer 1:8 released during 2006, and a lot has changed since, both in terms of the design of the cars themselves and the range of Technic pieces available.

The release of 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car is therefore long overdue, and today seems like an appropriate time to review it given that the 2022 season is now underway.

Review: 40503 Dagny Holm - Master Builder

Posted by ,

40503 Dagny Holm - Master Builder is the third in a series of sets available exclusively from the LEGO House in Billund.

It celebrates the life and work of Dagny Holm Jensen who was the niece of LEGO founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen and considered to be the company's first 'master builder'. She designed the models for LEGOLAND Billund when it opened in the 1960s, and continued to work at the company until 1986, aged 70.

The set depicts the model maker in her workshop building a large-scale giraffe.
