An Anatomy of Star Wars Aliens: Part 4

I’m back again to take a scrutineering look at how some of our favourite aliens have been depicted in Lego. After parts one, two and three we’ve now reached the part that will bring us all the way from 2015 to 2020, rounding out over 20 years and dozens of sentient minifigure species along the way.

The last 5 years or so have seen huge prominence in Disney’s Star Wars, for better or worse, releasing the full Sequel Trilogy plus Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story. We’ve also seen The Mandalorian, the completion of Rebels & The Clone Wars, Resistance, and Lego’s Freemaker Adventures - so there’s a huge variety of new worlds to draw aliens from!

Continuing from Part 1 and Part 2, let’s delve deeper into the well-populated & diverse world of Star Wars alien minifigures. Last time we looked at Lego species introduced up until 2010, but after 12 years of the theme we still weren’t yet halfway through all the sentient creatures created as minifigures.

This time we’ll be looking at 2011-2014, a smaller time period where the franchise was somewhat quieter – the Clone Wars raged on, became interrupted by Disney’s Lucasfilm buyout and then we saw Rebels. 2012 was also the start of a planned annual Saga 3D re-release but we only saw Episode I. How will we see changes in how the aliens are depicted in this era? Let’s take a look.

Following on from my first article on the subject, I’m back with more about some of our favourite licensed alien minifigures. Last time we looked at Star Wars species introduced from 1999 to 2004. In response to public opinion I’m pleased to say more comparison photos are now the order of the day to cover all the species I’ll be talking about.

This time we’ll be looking at 2005-2010, when we saw two more feature films, much-loved games, and the early years of Clone Wars on TV. I’ll still be judging the minifigures’ development based on their custom moulds, accuracy and in some cases whether they feel ‘Lego’ enough. So let’s take a look...

An Anatomy of Star Wars Aliens, Part 1

What Lego fan doesn’t love the humble minifigure? Perhaps you like pirate minifigs, knight minings, or prefer Classic Spacemen? Or perhaps like me, ever since setting eyes on a cantina or two you’ve been a sucker for the more unusual, alien minifigures, more specifically from Star Wars.

Having dabbled in unlicensed aliens & UFOs, the introduction of Star Wars opened up a colourful universe of aliens (humanoid or otherwise) for our Lego characters in 1999. Now the theme is over 20 years old we’ve had over 60 non-human alien species, around 3 new on average each year. I wanted to take a look back at how they’ve been introduced, specialised elements and whether they’ve improved over time – which isn’t always an easy answer.
