This is our last holiday gift guide article. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the series over the last month. I hope you enjoyed reading them and perhaps took inspiration from them, too.

As promised, everyone who contributed has been entered into a prize draw to win a Brickset goodie bag and this morning I drew five names out of the hat. Find out who's won at the end of this article.

First though, Oregondete81 takes us back in time to Christmas 1986 in a heartwarming tale, parts of which I am sure will be familiar to many...

December 24th, 1986

You lay in bed starring at your A-team poster hoping that sleep will finally take you. You know sleep is the only thing that will save you from being trapped in time as the clock seems to barely move. But the excitement keeps you awake. Will you get the ECTO you asked for? Will you finally get to add Skeletor to your collection?

You hope and pray your mom didn’t fall for the Teddy Ruxpin ads. Finally, exhaustion overcomes you and without knowing it you slip into a deep sleep.

Our penultimate holiday gift recommendation, in the > $200 tier, comes courtesy of John_Musketeer:

42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 is quite simply one of the best Technic sets ever produced. At 3,696 pieces, it’s also the 4th largest Technic set, so it does present a challenge in difficulty and in scale. It does have a price tag to match, however, but I do recommend this set to all fans of Lego, Technic fans or not. If the 18+ age rating is appropriate in any set, it’s this one.

Our last user-contributed pick from sets in the $100-$200 category is from Cocoa. Tomorrow I'll publish the staff selections, then on Sunday and Monday I'll publish a couple of over $200 nominations and after that it'll be time to commence our Advent calendar countdowns!

80013 Monkie Kid's Team Secret HQ may just be the ultimate LEGO playset, or close to it!

The size of it can be comparable to the highly revered 70618 Destiny's Bounty from the LEGO Ninjago Movie, which has since been retired.

Holiday gift guide: Bookshop

Bookshop

The eve of the unveiling of next year's modular building seems like an apt time to publish Dangerplug_MK2's recommendation in the $100-$200 category:

When it comes to the $100 - $200 range, there can only be one choice: 10270 Bookshop

In the words of the owner of this site, this set is ‘the best since 10243 Parisian Restaurant... it’s colourful, varied and attractive’. Need I say more? Anyway, I’ll try…

This year’s phenomenal modular is one of a kind. It includes the first full house since 10218 Pet Shop, which was released in 2011, and if a sample size of two is anything to go by, then the next purely residential building won’t be released for another 9 years! What’s more, this is the first ever Lego bookshop, which provides much-needed variation from the ever-growing assortment of food-themed buildings.

Holiday gift guide: Concrete mixer truck

Concrete Mixer Truck

Concrete Mixer Truck

Today's selection in the $100-$200 category comes courtesy of chefkaspa, 42112 Concrete Mixer Truck:

Finally, a new truck idea at a good scale! A cement mixer (to be precise: ready-mixed concrete) was only available in the Lego City line before.

The set designers chose to use a special, big drum piece to implement a play function: The drum can be filled with Lego pieces and unloaded by a Technic function.

What I also like: Bright - respectively classic - blue is back in Technic, but only as supporting element as the main colour is dark blue. The size should be attractive to anyone interested in Technic. The build isn't very challenging and seems to be suitable for all ages.

Upon closer examination, one may find some issues that could be improved. Don't be afraid, the truck allows for any improvements that you may think of!

Regular contributor to this series FoolECK has recommended a Star Wars set in the $100-200 price range for us today:

Star Wars is no stranger to anyone. Big or small, we all love the universe where the Force surrounds and binds all living things. Year 2020 marks the important anniversary of 40 years of (probably) the best Star Wars movie of all times – The Empire Strikes Back. In that case, why not bestow (probably) the best 2020 LEGO Star Wars set on your close ones?

Holiday gift guide: $100-200

Pirates of Barracuda Bay

Pirates of Barracuda Bay

©2020 LEGO Group

Today's recommendation comes courtesy of Cocoa and Mr_Hankey who both extol the virtues of one of the best sets of all time, 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay:

Cocoa:

Pirates of Barracuda Bay may just be the greatest set on the market. It truly is the ultimate LEGO experience for anyone who loves classic themes. It is hard to put in words just how enjoyable this set is. The island is vibrant, detailed, and simply huge! It just demands presence on a shelf.

The island's structures imply that the bay is a repurposed shipwreck, with folded sails and lots of bright green vegetation. I appreciate the little details that comprise the bay, including a small statue from LEGO Islanders and an array of palm trees.

But that's not all; the island's structures can be combined to become a large version of the classic 6285 Black Seas Barracuda. For an average LEGO fan, $200 is simply out of the range. And I completely get that. But compared to other sets at this price range, it is simply the best deal out there! You won't regret this purchase if this is your first large set, or just love LEGO Pirates.
