Review: 910016 Sheriff's Safe

Posted by ,

I started reviewing 910016 Sheriff's Safe over eight months ago. I recently re-discovered the folder with the Brickset watermarked images and realised that I had never actually completed this review.

I was loaned the set in MISB condition in order to produce this review, and it is remiss of me not to have persevered with publishing the final review.

Reviewers of 910016 Sheriff's Safe have indicated that it does have a minor design flaw in the safe's combination mechanism which, fortunately, can be fixed using the spare parts included with the set. This proposed fix has its own problems, though.

I have looked into this and think that I have come up with an alternative fix that is structurally more sound than the fixes proposed by others. No additional parts are required for my suggested fix, either.

Read on as I recommence my series of reviews of the BrickLink Designer Program sets.

In the third of a series of reviews of the BrickLink Designer Series, I take a look at 910028 Pursuit of Flight.

Pursuit of Flight is an incredibly adaptable concept build that, provided the foundation mechanism is working properly, can be modified to make any kinetic diorama you like.

Read on as I describe this versatile set as I continue my series of reviews of the BrickLink Designer Program sets.

In the second of a series of reviews, I take a look at 910001 Castle in the Forest.

This set taps into the overwhelming support that exists in the LEGO community for castle themed sets that all started with the 1978 release of 375 Castle: one of the Classic themes released that year that heralded the minifigure.

Review: 910017 Kakapo

Aotearoa - New Zealand's remote geography means that a range of unusual birds has evolved due to the absence of land-based predators.

In the absence of predators, various birds lost the ability to fly — and with plentiful food and a mild climate, some grew in size and weight. The kakapo (Strigops habroptila) is one of these iconic flightless, nocturnal parrots that are endemic to New Zealand.

As 910017 Kakapo is quintessentially a Kiwi set, read on as I start a series of reviews of the BrickLink Designer Program sets.

Nautical review of RMS Titanic

Titanic

©2021 LEGO Group

The sinking of RMS Titanic on the night of 14/15 April 1912 after she hit an iceberg during her maiden voyage, and the aftermath and controversy has elevated Titanic to celebrity status: she is arguably the most famous ship of all time.

At 1.35m from bow to stern, 10294 Titanic is the longest LEGO set ever, and its part count of 9,090 is surpassed only by the 11,695-piece 31203 World Map; One could say that this is a LEGO set of Titanic proportions!

Read on as I describe some nautical features of this ship and the impact the sinking had on the maritime community.

Throwback Thursday: 10210 Imperial Flagship

Posted by ,
View image at Flickr

This Throwback Thursday review merges two goals of mine: a review of an iconic set - 10210 Imperial Flagship - that has never had a "staff review" at Brickset, and looking at this set that closely resembles a ship close to my heart: Lt. James Cook's HMS Endeavour.

New Zealand is currently commemorating the 250th anniversary of the landfall encounter between Europeans and the indigenous Maori already living in Aotearoa.

I have recently had the privilege of sailing in the replica HMB Endeavour during the eighteen-day delivery voyage from Sydney, Australia to New Zealand. The replica HMB Endeavour has been chartered by the NZ Government to take part in the Tuia – Encounters 250 commemoration.

In my opinion, 10210 Imperial Flagship very closely resembles a minifigure scale representation of a ship with celebrity status such as the original HMS Endeavour that was the centrepiece of James Cook's first global circumnavigation between 1768 and 1771.

Read on as I share my experience in a replica 18th-Century ship rolling across the Tasman Sea.

This review is of a pair of the smaller Technic sets for 2019.

42090 Getaway Truck and the 42091 Police Pursuit have some of the fewest parts in the 2019 line-up of Technic sets this year.

Ever since their inception, Technic sets have often had an added feature of being capable of being combined with a closely related set to build a larger feature set.

These two sets continue this feature of being complimentary racers which will combine to build an extreme racer. Read on as I review 42090 Getaway Truck and 42091 Police Pursuit.

42095 Remote-Controlled Stunt Racer is the successor to the immensely popular 42065 RC Tracked Racer.

There has been considerable interest in this set as it introduces a much-sought-after larger sprocket wheel. That, combined with a souped-up Power Functions, means that this latest tracked racer has a lot on offer.

Read on to find out how this latest Remote Controlled tracked racer performs.

For over fifty years, trains have been one of the most popular themes in the LEGO range. Every now and then LEGO updates their method of powering and controlling the trains.

This year LEGO has introduced the Powered Up system that makes a significant shift from previous power and control systems: Powered Up pairs with a Bluetooth enabled smart device.

In this review I take a look at 60197 Passenger Train. This follows on from my earlier review of 60198 Cargo Train.

In this article I also take a look at the Powered Up app that controls this year's trains from a smartphone via a Bluetooth connection.

Review: 42082 Rough Terrain Crane

View image at Flickr

There will be debates amongst Technic enthusiasts about which set represents 2018's Flagship of the Technic theme. Is it the 42083 Bugatti Chiron or will it be the 42082 Rough Terrain Crane?

At 4057 parts, 42082 Rough Terrain Crane sits as the Technic set with the most number of parts.

Cranes have featured in the Technic range from 1978 when 855 Mobile Crane was released in the second wave of Technical sets.

Read on as I review the first half of building this latest Technic mobile crane model. Part 2 will be posted tomorrow.

LEGO has recently released a new wave of motorised sets using the Bluetooth enabled Powered Up system.

The 76112 App Controlled Batmobile is the latest LEGO set to utilise the Powered Up format. The difference with this set is that it requires a smartphone app to control the model as it does not come with its own remote controller.

Read on as I review the App Controlled Batmobile and test out the new app controller.

Review: 60198 Cargo Train

It has been three years since LEGO released a new Cargo Train. This year's set is special for two reasons: first LEGO has unveiled a new Powered UP, Bluetooth enabled, power functions system, and secondly, this year's 60198 Cargo Train has about 30% more parts than any comparable LEGO train set.

Read on as I describe this newest cargo train in the LEGO Train Network.
