THE TEAM: 30196 Ferrari Pit Crew

Written by (AFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in Philippines,

    SHELL LEGO® Ferrari Promotional sets

Being a minifig collector, this had to be my first purchase. But since I really don’t delve into racing, you have to pardon what I think each minifig does and has in the set.

    THE BAG

This seems to be a standard polybag. The front shows the 3 minifigs and their equipment.

The back shows the standard hazard warnings, showing the different languages, of what I believe are the intended market/regions where the sets are to be launched. If you can read your native tongue in the list (mine is Filipino), then the promo may "PROBABLY" come to your area, or somewhere near you. It also shows the countries of origin of the parts.

Lastly, the customary Ferrari official holographic product markings and logo are also present

    THE INSTRUCTION SHEET

This is rather large, but is expected.

    THE PARTS

These are the contents out of the bag. There is a separate plastic bag containing other parts. We also have the instruction leaflet.

The white box contains the sticker sheet to protect it from damage, which is pretty neat. You don’t see that even with larger sets…even with my favorite STAR WARS. The stickers are "up to par" with the other stickers TLG produces. Only time will tell if they peel off... which I really hope does not happen...

Notice the different V-power decals: the one that is the same size as the Shell Helix decal go together with the rack built with the lady fig. The big one goes to the other guy. I suggest that you don't throw away the remainder of the sheet once you're done sticking them on. I always use these to cut out my own designs in certain MOCs

    2nd BAG

These are the contents. I do like the transparent 1x1 round tiles. Otherwise, everything else is standard.

    THE BUILD

    MINIFIGS

When constructed, the set gives 3 minifigs. They do not have the paint mark on the neck of the torso. Though not shown, there are also LEGO markings on the inner side of the arms. Holding the legs against the light will show some translucency. People who know what I’m talking about know what these mean…

The hairpieces are not the standard ones. These are in dark brown and reddish brown hues. I won't go into specifics where the hairpieces first appeared or anything to that effect but having these variants are very welcome, indeed.

Assembled and without decals, the figs look lackluster.

Putting those on will certainly transform them, though the female fig does not have any on the back. The print designs themselves look flashy and very sporty. The color red always catches the eye.

    THE FERRARI RACE MECHANIC

This minifig has a hand truck. I do believe I see these guys carrying out the replacement wheels for the cars, so I was expecting at least 2 tires to go with this one.

    FERRARI REFUELLING ENGINEER

This one has refueling equipment with the decorated tile with gauges. This was a rather fun build. It appears ready to go anytime

    SHELL TRACK SCIENTIST

Lastly, the lady fig comes complete with flasks, beakers, and almost everything needed to make the secret formula for racing faster (maybe). I really like the assortment here of transparent parts. It is at least a straightforward representation of someone working in the lab, with a Shell logo on her dress/gown.

    EXTRA PARTS

You get a visor, a black tap, a trans clear 1x1 round plate, and a trans clear 1x1 tile.

    OVERALL IMPRESSION

For the price, this is a good buy. This the only time I get to buy a set that is at least priced similarly abroad. It's even cheaper than the CMFs available locally. The only catch, of course, is the need to fill up with the required amount of fuel. I try to save on gas as much as possible, but the desire to have all of the sets makes want to forget about everything…sorry, mother earth, but this is a once-in-a-blue-moon promo, even if there are no chrome parts…

I would not expect a mini chemistry lab in the race track and I have no idea why this was included in the “pit crew”. They should at least have given us a fire extinguisher to go with it. The other figs are rather spot on as I could remember seeing them work in flash in some of the races I have seen on TV. But I do remember everybody wearing helmets. Still, though there may be some inappropriateness, they are rather welcome in terms of parts selection.

The set relies heavily on decals, which is a shame. These should be a whole lot better if the designs were printed on. Realistically, at least the minifigs should have printed torsos. Why TLG decided to do otherwise is beyond me. Notice the lady fig: the white decal is a lot brighter than the actual torso. You could just imagine how these would look like in the future with wear and tear. Also, it take a degree of skill to put these on at the right places without overlapping

Overall, there is good playability involved in the set. Each fig representing what it takes to make a difference in the race… It’s not just the car; it’s the fuel, too. The parts are varied enough to make each build interesting, not to mention the potential in using them on other MOCs. Lastly, I noticed that the clutch power of the parts seem a lot better than some of the sets I have, which is also a welcome development. Whether or not this is true with the cars will be the subject of my future reviews.

    Worth every penny

    Written by (AFOL) in Singapore,

Shell has this promo where you can get this set for 140 Philippine Pesos (about 3.40 USD) after buying 1,500 Php (about 36.50 USD) worth of gasoline.

    Pros

    • Pro 1 - 3 minifigs
    • Pro 2 - Useful pieces

    Cons

    • Con 1 - Stickers instead of printed torsos.

This is a really nice set to have. You get 2 males and a female although their torsos aare blank and you need to put stickers, this could be a con for this set or could be a plus :) You also get a cart, a small gasoline thingy and a shelf of bottles. It's worth every penny.

    Sticker? What the...

    Written by (AFOL) in Germany,

You can get this Set free, if you fill your car with 30 liter V-Power Racing gas at a Shell gas station. If I calculate (Germany): [1,74 EUR/L (V-Power Gas) - 1,48 EUR/L (normal Gas)] * 30L = 7,8 EUR for this set. Okay maybe it is worth. But why Stickers? The only licenced "Parts" of the set are the sticker. Nothing special.
