A cheap display set that's reasonably large

Written by (TFOL) in United States,

The set here is an amazing fixed display piece but not much more.

    Build

The build is centered around a parrot body built with SNOT bricks. The wings and legs are attached with Technic joints connected to the body. The head is connected through normal studs.

Assembly is not terribly complicated, but it is complicated enough that a 7+ build age is acceptable for this price. The stability of the model is fine. However, the wings are prone to snapping off their (limited) movement, and the flowers also suffer from a similar problem.

    Looks

I have no qualms about the shaping really. However, I have more issues with the colour of the parrot. It most clearly resembles a macaw, but the counterpart to 31144, 31136, is at least based on realistic colors for a macaw. At least on the internet, there are no real images of pink macaws that are not sketches or part of image libraries. I would have rather seen a scarlet/red macaw as that is more recognizable, at least to me, than this macaw. The only logic I see for the color choice is that these days, pink and blue have become complements within society. I've attached a drawing below (https://imgur.com/a/j6yhx5b).

    Pink Macaw

A slight nitpick: the flowers seem excessively blocky, especially compared to the Botanical Collection, where LEGO has made flowers more and more realistic. Having these types of flowers could be disappointing. Personally, I might change the flowers.

    Functionality

Those looking to be able to out-of-the-box pose the bird in more dynamic positions may be disappointed by the lack of movement within the limbs of the parrot. The legs are connected with Technic pins that refuse movement, the wings can only tilt slightly and move 360 degrees, the head has no movement, and the flowers have only tilt. I would have liked more adjustable poses, especially one that would allow for the bird to be put into a flying position.

    Parts

The parts inventory is OK. I don't really have an inclination to part this one down, and I have forgotten the pieces in the set, so... Anyways, there are a decent number of curved pieces in this set.

    Final Verdict

The macaw having a fictionalized colour scheme pains me. A red colour would have been far more recognizable, but this doesn't look too bad. For a parts pack, there are probably other better options that are not shop-at-home exclusive. The set is USD$20, which isn't a bad price if you want a display piece. However, for most other purposes, this is probably not the best set to get.
