How can you not love a set with five horses?

Written by (AFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

How can you not love a set with five horses? This was a great addition to our collection, and very handy in our regular play of convoys across the carpet as kids. The build is detailed enough without being too fiddly, though with the sides of the cell being made from single pieces there's less scope for alternative builds.

The variety of the minifigures and their accessories offers a degree of flexibility (for example, two different forms of helmet plume) and a nice selection of arms. The pennants are a nice touch too, forming a welcome splash of colour. But of course we wanted this set for the horses, so we would never be disappointed with it.

    The dark convoy

Written by (AFOL) in United Kingdom,

I always loved this set as a kid - there was something about the dark black castle walls being used for the sides of the chariot which lent an air of doom and hopelessness to the poor prisoner!

2 mini figures and plenty of weapons mean it is well defended and the archer sits high up; the catch for the rear door is cleverly incorporated into the flag and I like the 4 horse harness and the way it rotates although I can never work out whether to have same colour horses on the rows or columns or to alternate!

The inside is cramped and it is awkward to actually fix the prisoner inside without breaking it but in my current set up he has escaped to join up with his forest men chums so heyho...

The matching knight is useful and overall it is a great set (much better than 6042 dungeon hunters)

    Lego Steve's Review

Written by (AFOL , gold-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

I imagine the conversation in that LEGO design office over this one.

What? Five? No surly not five? That’s crazy, five horses in a set, ohh ok if you insist.

Yes as you can see this set has five horses, which I believe is a record for all LEGO sets (if I am wrong please correct me on this), this set came out when the Horse was a very new LEGO piece so I suppose that they were trying to make the most of it.

Aside from the ridiculous number of horses the set also include three Crusaders and one civilian, as I have a soft spot for all civilians this set ranks highly in my favourites, but the design is not the best. The carriage itself feels small and narrow and when the horses are pulled along some of them have a tendency to cartwheel over. One nice touch is the flag at the back of the carriage which also locks the jail. Still a great way to get a cavalry division started in any army.

    4 Horse Power

Written by (AFOL , rhodium-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

Out of the wagon and cart sets this one really shines as a marvellous 'deluxe' wagon due to its clever four horse drawn shaft design.

    Minifigures:

    • Archer: Less regular red britches with black belt, the gaudy lion badge torso, black helmet. bow, quiver,
    • Guard: Crossed axe badge torso, blue cloak, red britches with black belt, skirted grey helmet, brown spear or brown axe.
    • Knight: Pretty smart with the silver armour printed red with blue sleeve torso, blue britches with black belt, blue cloak, the grey helmet with red feather plume, lance with red and yellow flag, classic blue lion shield and a sword.
    • Peasant/thief: He gets the best mediaeval torso but bright red britches so no hiding in the bushes. Black hood as usual but brown also exists.

    Flag On My Wagon

A thorough selection to cope with transporting the one prisoner who is another poor old peasant stealing to survive. The sword, two spears and axe can clip on the wagon. The black saddle is a nice choice to go with the black wagon and those guard torsos with the crossed axes make a really nice bronzy looking badge in brown and gold where as much of the Lion army is overtly red and blue.

The build is strong and makes an enjoyable bit of Castle kit construction, the wheels fit axles as standard with a straight forward axle, sides, front, back and top template but with obvious adaptation for access points. Its some good honest building fun.

Immediately the wagon's blue trim on black is not particularly appealing to the eye but its functions are good: The flag tilts back perhaps in the wind or as a wagon content indicator. The back opens to allow a prisoner to be marched on or to drop out on to the floor and escape.

The four carriage horses are cleverly strapped together with some special bits that flex as hinged blue pieces and from the base of which the guard can drive. The design around the guards seat under the canopy is pretty good but the overpowering blue just seems a shame as the set is otherwise really good. All black or a grey instead of blue could have made this otherwise excellent set more appealing.

The weird but effective five stud long castle panel bricks are great but were never adapted in to a Town version for wall and window sections. Here they are excellent in black and despite colour preferences, all the bricks here are used really well. Let's not forget you get five horses with this set! Two black and three white.

    Dungeon Express

This still remains a better carriage than a later prisoner transport and because the ever wonderful cart wheels have a rotational axis turntable this remains a great design and certainly dominates the road with its size.

    Nice carriage, strange color.

Written by (AFOL , rhodium-rated reviewer) in Netherlands,

Overall 4 bricks : A very nice addition if you own other Castle sets of the Lion Knights theme but also with other themed sets.

Building 3 bricks : Like all older Castle sets real building with small bricks and parts, simply pleasant to do. Not really spectacular so 3 bricks will do. The result is nice and stable, a good detail is the fact that the horses are manoeuvrable. It has been also good thinking about the flagpole, same color as the cart and a lock for the prison door.

Parts 4 bricks : Good amount of mini-figures and weapons, 3 knights and I especially like the outlaw. Remarkable is the amount of horses, 5 in a set this size. Only thing that is strange is the blue color of the carriage, brown or grey would have been more logical.

Playability 4 bricks : Very playable if used together with other Castle set, for both young and old(er).

Value 3 bricks : I don't know the retail price when it was sold new, but now the average going price is about €41,00 which I think is too expensive. I paid less which made it definitly worth buying because overall it is a very nice set.
