Versatile Ninja of Lightning.
Set #71215 Fun Pack Jay: Though not specifically shown on the packaging this particular Fun Pack was originally only available at Toys-R-Us. Which makes finding it much harder these days with that chain mostly defunct, unless you are lucky enough to still live in an area of the world where they continue to operate under new management.
Packaging
As we’ve discussed in previous reviews the packaging is pretty uniform and despite being exclusive to TRU does not have the TRU Exclusive printing anywhere on the box.
Parts
There aren’t a lot of parts here to discuss, the only thing truly unique is the character specific toy tag, everything else is pretty common.
Minifigures
Jay: This set features Jay whose printing is shared between this and the Enter the Serpent set released in 2015. The printing looks pretty impressive, I don’t own a large number of Ninja to compare him with from past sets in the Ninjago Theme, but I do enjoy the look of it. His accessory is a golden Nunchuk build.
The build
Storm Fighter: The first model is a miniaturized version of Jay’s Storm Fighter and the build is very solid, nothing pops off easily compared to Kai or Cole’s builds in the Team Pack.
Lightning Jet: This build alters the look of the jet into a different design which looks interesting, I’m not certain if there was a larger Minifigure scaled model for this particular build, but this second model’s build is still fun.
Electro-Shooter: Building this final model is a bit of disappointment honestly. The third build is nowhere near as impressive looking and is rather bland compared to the others, there’s far too much plate on top of plate construction making for a rather ugly final model.
The completed model
Storm Fighter: This is a fun model to play with and is pretty faithful in design to the larger vehicle, it doesn’t quite match up with the digital model as there are some obvious differences, chief among them the size as the digital model lets the Minifigure sit in the cockpit.
Lightning Jet: This model also doesn’t match up 100% accurately to the final in-game model, but it is a fair attempt and looks quite nice. Really fun to play with off the tag as well, just like the first model.
Electro-Shooter: This is the worst model, it fails to capture the in-game design very accurately and is really bland looking compared to the first two models. I think they should have tried to make something other than a flying vehicle here, maybe a submarine would have worked better and been just different enough to look better, as it stands this is the weakest of the three vehicle builds in my opinion.
The Digital Content
The Adventure World: This Fun Pack unlocks the Ninjago Adventure World, which means if you picked up someone else from Ninjago then you kind of already unlocked this adventure world. As I noted in my Team Pack review it’s a very expansive area with a lot of great continuity nods and dialogue from the television show. And the music is top tier.
Character & Vehicle Abilities: Jay’s list of in-game abilities include Spinjitzu, Fix-It, Acrobat, Stealth, Electricity and Intelligence which is a very decent list of abilities compared to some of the other Ninja. The Storm Fighter can access Flight Docks and Flight Cargo Hooks. The Lightning Jet can add Destroy Gold LEGO Objects and Electricity Switches to its repertoire and when the Electro-Scooter is built you gain a Special Attack. A fairly decent level of abilities for this character.
Overall opinion
Jay is a pretty decent little Fun Pack and honestly I’d recommend him as one of the better options for accessing the Ninjago Adventure World because his abilities are semi-rare compared to some of the other ninja. (There are only a few characters with the power to activate Electricity Switches after all.) Compared to Cole’s vehicle, Jay also has some better builds, though not by much as the third model attests. Again though I say if you’re only out to get access to everything in-game and want to limit how much you spend I’d still suggest picking your favorite ninja and ignore the rest.
