A staple in the Ninjago polybag line-up are our little 2-in-1 offerings – polybags that allow you to rebuild a vehicle into a second one: Freddy had done the impressive 30536 Combo Charger which Ethan had followed up with 30591 Titanium Mini Mech, and now it was time for Jay.

When looking at our line-up of Jay vehicles over the years, the Thunder Raider was always one of my favorites: An off-road vehicle on tank treads ferrying around a mech that you can actually take off and play with separately? What more could you ask for?

Turning that awesomeness of a vehicle into a polybag was an idea I soon regretted – after all I had to also design a B model that would hardly be able to use any of the chain links required for the tracks. After a lot of back-and-forth I was able to turn the Thunder Raider into Jay's Lighting Jet, a model that feels way bigger than the pieces its made from.

In the end things tend to work out, especially when you have help: To this day I'm thankful for the packing engineer that happily spend an hour with me, explaining packing stations and other limitations that we face when packing polybags. Pro-tip: Just don't use a boat load of chain links!

To me, the high point of Ninjago polybags is Michael's 30292 Jay NanoMech: A perfectly compact mech suit, equipped with big swords and plenty of fun, it was definitely something I would have loved as a kid.

Having been tasked with designing what needed to be a "vehicle-focused" polybag, instead of going down the classic wheel-based route, I quickly pitched this little mech for Lloyd. The big swords from the original stayed but everything else received an upgrade - and quickly convinced both the team and the partner. Success!

For all you worried ninjas out there: Knowing that a lot of you might want to build your own copy of this otherwise extremely rare set, we made sure that we didn't use any exclusive elements, minifigures or stickers. As such we hope some of you will be able to source the bricks to enjoy this little holiday treat from the Ninjago team :)

After finishing Ninjago City Gardens I was looking for a different challenge - and the Ultra Sonic Raider would become just that: A combiner vehicle that had to pay hommage to an icon of Ninjago history while also bringing something new to the table. Oh, and not to mention a global pandemic that meant designing this largely from home!

Leonardo Lopez conveniently had a half-built sketch model sitting around but it being more of a styling exercise than a working prototype only the wing design, the color scheme, and the idea of using the X-Wing canopies survived. It gave me a starting point though, and I quickly arrived at the Eurocopter Tiger- style double-canopy configuration that makes for an aggressive and sleek design.

Most of the time though was spent on mechanisms and getting the various components to come together in a satisfying and stable way. The bikes slide into axle holders from the back, and the jet attaches in a similar fashion so that while playing the forces applied to it actually support the structure. The wing function took weeks to get right - ball joints and linkages are fickle but once we got it to work it made for a satisfying and big transformation! And I didn't even mention the bike that creates the core of it all!

I'm really happy that we were able to include a vehicle for each of the ninja. The side-cars were a tough sell on the team but when we finally solved them, it created such a satisfying and complete package that will likely provide hours of play.

The sets for LEGO House are wonderfully varied in their subject matter - so little did I know that I'd be studying moulding machines and use more lime green elements than I would ever use again when I signed on to help out on this.

A celebration of the move from wooden toys to plastic moulding, this model replicates the moulding machine that is part of the six brick experience in LEGO House. A mechanism on the back allows the mould to open and close, and six red 1x2 jumpers replicate the six 2x4 bricks that will be packaged into a polybag that visitors can take home. Sliding doors allow access to the machine parts and while ultimately a relatively simple feature to design, they commanded a very specific build order. The same is true for the compartment with the three doors in the front that sits lower than the rest of the model and is attached as a separate sub-assembly, allowing for an otherwise flat build.

The red bucket was a fun feature I noticed on the real machine (so it had to be replicated, naturally) but my favorite detail are easily the 2x2 decorated tiles featuring the six brick polybags. And yellow crate they go into is of course a small nod to a certain yellow-shoed master builder :)

Sketch model by Stuart Harris, graphic design by Diego Sancho.

I've been graced with the title of a 'castle builder' before, at least within the fan community. So being able to work on this latest Ninjago wave – and especially on the big bad dungeon – was close to my heart: I simply love the genre, and getting to contribute to the legacy was definitely special!

Dimitris Stamatis had created an awesome and ambitious sketch model that I got tasked to take over and turn into what you can see on the final box. He had raised the bar high – and while I cursed him regularly throughout the development of this set, I am glad he did.

I spent a great amount of time on the mechanism, as turning the pole on the left activates various functions throughout the set, and making sure the build could be broken down across 10 bags was a nice puzzle to solve. It was imperative for the board game aspect that it worked well, and I'm quite thrilled how much life it brings to it.

Something that was important to me was to make the rocks feel as natural as possible and break out of the square grid we are so used to. I experimented with different ways of doing so and am really happy with the angled bridge in the front and the slanted walkway leading to a platform on the right.

Finally I garnished it with as many details as I managed to squeeze in: There's lunch being prepared over a fire, gems hidden away for looting and as a fan of D&D I made sure to include something for each and every class.
Oh, and that portrait in the back? Well, guess I'm immortalised in a LEGO set now... Djordje is to blame for that one, who knew I was secretly a necromancer!

I hadn't even started on Jay's Cyber Dragon when I got asked if I also wanted to tackle a second one, this time for the evil Unagami, this season's bad guy.

The task called for a much smaller counterpart, inspired by the classic Chinese dragons but leaning completely into the mechanical video game aesthetic, resulting in a much more aggressive and angular design. Careful to keep the build interesting despite the smaller size I made sure to include details such as the skis that shape the eyes or the ice skates that make for formidable claws.

In the beginning of 2019 I moved to NINJAGO and with that a dream came true: I always loved the wild creativity it offered amongst the LEGO themes, and boy, was I looking forward to the adventure to come!

Right away I got entrusted with the epitome of a NINJAGO set and was soon working away on the big hero dragon, this time for Jay. A daunting task, a welcome challenge, and a great opportunity to hit the ground running, I decided to pair the new Cyber aesthetic with increased poseability and – after a joking remark by my manager – even managed to add a pair of spring shooters.

Having spent weeks on it I'm delighted how the trigger mechanism worked out: No matter the angle of the body segments it will fire the spring shooters reliably. And since it uses a rubber element it even feels nice ;-)
I even managed to squeeze in a small NPU: Two R2-D2-legs are being used for the cheekbones, and it is quite pleasing how they fit snugly under the 4x3 wedge that creates the dragon's eye brows.

This set was co-designed with Woon Tze Chee. And dare I say it, we had a blast!

Getting to follow up the beautiful lineup of the 2019 Chinese New Year sets was quite humbling as they had set a high bar. We got asked to capture the famous Temple Fairs that take place all over China to celebrate the New Year with traditional snacks, performances and more merchandise than one can fathom.

It was important to us to match the cultural intricacies, the details on the stalls, and even the historical context so we spent a lot of time with research, and from there tried to marry authentic Chinese design with a fun and joyful LEGO experience.

Candied haw, dough figurines, plush toys, porcelain,... – it all had to be there, and we somehow managed to squeeze everything into the compact stall designs we came up with. I'm particularly happy with the angled roof designs and the toy plane, as my earliest LEGO memory is that of swooshing a 'giant' DUPLO plane through my grandparent's apartment.

The temple – setting the stage behind the stalls – was then a fun exercise in matching the colourful real-life counterparts and capturing the high level of detail while only remaining a facade. The roof – a slightly tedious endeavour but oh so worthwhile – even depleted our internal element stock during development!

For the final space battle we came up with a variety of cool spaceships for all major characters. This one was sketched by Wes Talbott while I was busy with the movie prop of Metalbeard's cupcake galleon and I took over once we decided to turn the Wyld-Mayhem into an awesome product.

Combining the disc shooter with the star dropping function proved to be a bit of a headache while ensuring a stable model that was easy to build but I think the final result turned out to be quite nice. There was also something very delightful about working on a primarily teal model, something my colleague Chris Perron will agree with (his number of visits in our department went up suspiciously while I worked on this!). I even managed to squeeze in a teal 2x4 Brick!

After the great success of the 'Sewer Baby Battle Pack' I was delighted to be able to work on the follow-up that introduces the wonderful Sparkle Babies in brick-form.

I am particularly proud of the catapult function that makes use of a minifigure shovel and hope that people will appreciate the wonderful foliage recolours we were able to sneak into this set. My thanks to Jordan Scott who took care of this set when I moved to Ninjago just before we had to deliver this.

This set was designed by Jason Moreno. Together with Nicolaas Vas I designed all the fun animals in their spa costumes. My favourite detail are most certainly the heart tiles on the flamingo's wings :-)

MetalBeard was probably one of my favorite models from the first movie. Being able to combine his new mech form with the awesome new Apocalypseburg Batman was a fun one to do!

Joe Coleman did plenty of work on MetalBeard before I took it over to create the final set. Personally I'm quite happy with the wing orientation on Batman's throne and that we got to print that 'You're Welcome' tile. So shiny!

Being able to fit in such a 'complex' function into a co-promotion on such a limited footprint while making sure the build was stable and wouldn't break proved to be a tough challenge.

Being able to throw in a couple of rarer pieces such as the sand green 2x6 plates, the dark tan 1x2 bracket or the dark orange 1x1 brackets rounded it off nicely. But then again I want one just for the sad faces ;-)

I'm happy we were able to make a co-promotion that captures a more classic way of building using basic elements throughout.

The main challenge with this was to make it easy to build the heart while starting from a 2x2 base and having overhanging surfaces all over.

Not sure about you but I'll pick up a couple just for all those magenta pieces ;-)

Bricklist notes
I always used to build alternative models with the contents of co-promotions so getting to design some that had exactly that at the heart of their experience brought me a lot of joy.

Interestingly enough designing this set started with the C model as I wanted kids and fans to be able to build a mech, something most co-promotions struggle with due to the lack of hinge or clip elements. This of course heavily influenced both the excavator as well as the car.
While there is nothing super special or new about the selection of bricks I'm quite happy with how all three models worked out and having the decorated 1x2 tiles just made it so much nicer.
