Bricklist notes
I have always been intrigued by mono wheel vehicles even if they are absolutely silly and impractical. As soon as we decided to introduce NeZha as a character for 2022 I sketched up an oversized bike inspired by General Grievous’ wheel bike and then Markus Rollbühler threw me a curveball with a sketch model built using the roller coaster track element with the central vehicle built on the rollercoaster car. Isaac Snyder and Leonard Bahro also did some fun sketch models exploring shooting functions along the way. To ensure the rollercoaster track concept was stable we developed the double sided brickheadz brick which I also used in the Macaque jet just for fun and I’m excited to see other uses for it down the road! I may be wrong but I’m convinced this set may have the most flame elements in a single SKU with 30 by my count! The graphics were done by Lars Roersen Nielsen/Xiaodong Wen and Dennis Fong was the creative lead.

This car began as a more realistic hyper car in Mei’s livery and then I switched directions to explore a car that could transform into a dragon. That concept was intriguing but was harder for kids to decode without sacrificing the aesthetic appeal of either the car or dragon so we went with a combination of a race car with a dragon head on the front and claws holding the wheels. I had been eying the new large spring missile shooter that was originally designed for a water cannon for City and thought it would make a great dragon energy blast so I was happy to integrate that shooting function in the dragon head. This set was also one of the first to feature the new neon yellow (hi lighter) color. The graphics were done by Lars Roersen Nielsen/Xiaodong Wen and Dennis Fong was the creative lead.

This may have been my favorite Monkie Kid set to design just due to the epic silliness of it all balanced with some really fun play features. Hidden cat cannon with a paw as the trigger?…why not? Deployable go kart…definitely! Ping pong table?…yep. This set has it all. This also is the last set I designed that has a few silly personal Easter eggs: some initials of my family members within the graphics plus the climbing wall since I love climbing! I created early iterations that were like an RV, off-road Van (mystery machine inspired), and a city sightseeing bus before experimenting with placing shipping containers atop the off-road van which was an instantly wacky and unique silhouette that we all loved.

I did the first couple sketch models that defined the direction for this model. An early version had a spherical canopy to fit a drone optic or a minifig pilot but that changed to a more streamlined cockpit—the “drone” designation still stuck even though we know it’s not technically a drone ;). Raphael Pretesacque finished the model and worked super hard to make the spinning arcade turret function. Graphic design by Paul Turcanu and Xiaodong Wen and the creative lead was Simon Lucas.

The Cloud Bike started out as a hoverbike sketch model and slowly morphed into a transforming bike after testing several versions with children in China and finding that they were drawn to the more recognizable silhouette of a motorbike. Graphic design by Paul Turcanu and Xiaodong Wen and the creative lead was Simon Lucas.

The Inferno Jet began as a fairly normal plane but morphed into a hand-held blaster after an awesome sketch model by Niek van Slagmaat that fired two disc shooters with the pull of a trigger. I made a version that spewed multiple shots from tandem stud shooters like a flame thrower before arriving at the final double-shot spring shooter design. Graphic design by Paul Turcanu and Xiaodong Wen and the creative lead was Simon Lucas.

I had the pleasure of working with Leonard to develop the Speedy Panda drones for this set. We had a great couple of days coming up with all sorts of goofy food-related battle features before settling on the delivery drone with the food bomb drop function and the panda robot with the hot sauce flamethrower and soda can launcher.

It was an exciting challenge to design the first mech for a LEGO bigfig! Since the model was set in the city docks I wanted to make an industrial exo-suit that felt very sturdy and ready to lift crates or smash spider robots. I also tried to cram in several play features like the DJ station for Mo the Cat, the jet boosters, the spinning claw arm, and I was particularly pleased with the punching fist function in the right arm which was a feature that always tested well with kids! The graphics were done by Paul Turcanu and the creative lead was Simon Lucas.
