Bricklist notes: The exclusive "christmas" figure in SW advent calendars is apparently always a big draw, so I was wondering how to top that. What's better than an exclusive figure? Well. TWO exclusive figures, obviously! Making U-3PO (from the opening of Episode 4) was a surprisingly low-hanging fruit.
I also wanted as many new minibuilds as possible, and attractive generic minifigures, some of which are hard to find otherwise (like the Bespin guard). The snow man was put in to avoid having to build a stupid weapons rack. Funny side effect: the white un-decorated AT-AT driver helmet is not available in any other set!
And no, it was no coincidence there's a Slave One behind the first door. That ship was the first Star Wars UCS I designed.

Bricklist notes: Working with reference material from upcoming, unreleased movies (more than one year ahead, to boot) can be tricky, often it leaves many open questions. In this case I had nice 3D renderings of the transport from many angles, but they were all un-textured. And the single piece of artwork available only allowed a vague guess on the vehicle's color (and even that could still change after my final design deadline). Eventually I went with mostly light gray. Not the worst guess, as it turned out.
