Review: 71475 Mr. Oz's Space Car

Posted by ,

71460 Mr. Oz's Spacebus was an outstanding set from the initial wave of DREAMZzz sets, expertly mixing the mundane with the fantastical. 71475 Mr. Oz's Space Car seemingly achieves the same, which bodes well, especially given its lower price, relative to the Spacebus.

Also, all three alternative models appear equally impressive, a feat accomplished by very few DREAMZzz sets to date. The minifigure selection is appealing too, including both Mr. Oz and Albert the chimpanzee, so this should be another satisfying set.

Summary

71475 Mr. Oz's Space Car, 350 pieces.

Despite a few compromises, 71475 Mr. Oz's Space Car is an enjoyable DREAMZzz set

  • Three interesting configurations
  • Enjoyable functions
  • Easy transformation
  • Appealing characters
  • Disappointing mini rover

Minifigures

Mr. Oz wore a bulky armour component in 71460 Mr. Oz's Spacebus and is now even more heavily armoured, all in gold. The armour piece originates with the Galaxy Patrol Collectable Minifigure, but has never appeared in pearl gold before. A printed 1x1 round tile is attached to the front, displaying the Dream Chasers' emblem.

I like the consistency between this medium azure symbol and the details on Mr. Oz's torso and legs, although maybe the shoulders could have been similarly decorated with circles of energy. These circles are reminiscent of Iron Man's arc reactor and the armour's golden colour reminds me of Tony Stark's second comic book armour, albeit with a few extra reactors.

The character's glasses have also been upgraded, now including a steampunk-inspired lens over one eye, which is a nice addition. The metallic silver facial hair looks great too, although this is normally concealed beneath the impressive beard and hair element. A pearl silver laser gun completes the minifigure.

Albert the chimpanzee sports a similar golden suit, although his is much simpler, featuring just one energy ring. Nevertheless, this figure looks adorable, as usual. I love the oversized helmet and the head underneath looks superb, but a new facial expression would have been welcome, differing from Albert's smirk in 71460 Mr. Oz's Spacebus.

Three sets from the original DREAMZzz range contained Jayden, who is clearly an ideal target for the Nightmare Creatures! It seems that remains true for the second wave and Jayden wears his bright unicorn-themed pyjamas once again. Their colour scheme was presumably influenced by the minifigure from 43106 Unicorn DJ BeatBox, which is a fun reference back to VIDIYO.

While the heroes look good, my favourite of the four figures included is actually this Nightmare Creature. There was surprisingly little variation between these creatures across wave one, but this example is completely unique, featuring articulated tentacles and a printed brain above the Nightmare Creature's eye. I wonder whether this design was inspired by Professor Brainstein in 70171 Ultrasonic Showdown.

The Completed Model

Mr. Oz's car in the Waking World is decidedly underwhelming during the animated series and I think adhering more closely to that vehicle for the initial model would have been fun, given the potential contrast with the spaceship mode. However, this sleek design is attractive and I love the flame yellowish orange and black colour scheme to match the Spacebus.

The windscreen is stunning as well, using the same trans-opalescent blue colour as Cornish Pixies from the Harry Potter theme. This colour is not necessarily perfect for the standard car, but suits the spacecraft configuration very well. The trans-light blue accents across the front of the model loo superb too, above a stickered number plate.

Another sticker forms the Dream Chasers' symbol on the bonnet, which appears on the side of the car too. The transition between dark azure and flame yellowish orange on this sticker looks nice, although I think some more dark azure highlights could have been added, again matching the Spacebus.

A pair of bumper stickers are found on the other side, including one showing a Classic Space astronaut. There is only one seat inside the car, but space enough for Mr. Oz and the steering wheel, which is all that is really necessary. I like the tan upholstery and two reddish orange 1x8 plates are visible in here as well.

Basic engine detailing appears behind the windscreen and complements the huge exhausts on the back of the car, which are represented by 1x2 log bricks. The surrounding bodywork recalls the sports car in 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius, as both models integrate 1x2 handle pieces to frame the rear lights.

The standard car is appropriate for city driving, but Mr. Oz's sights are set on exploring other planets in the Dream World. The vehicle can therefore transform into a space rover, complete with large wheels, affording substantial ground clearance. Moreover, the rubber wheels become engines for a secondary shuttle.

Considering its size, I am impressed with the shape of the shuttle. The wings closely resemble those on the actual Space Shuttle and the black border along the wings looks great. There is a seat for a minifigure fixed between the engines, although I wish this had been recessed into the bodywork or was better adapted for Albert.

Once the off-road wheels are attached, the rover reaches nearly 19cm in length. The forward rake is interesting and I like the contrast between the bright colours of the original vehicle and the additional wheels. However, the trans-opalescent blue dish connected between the wheels matches the windscreen, so the model remains cohesive.

An articulated claw is mounted opposite the dish. While the arm looks reasonable, it is far too short to grasp items in front of the rover, which is a shame. In addition, there is no suspension, as the six wheels are attached to static Technic frames, but I understand the need for simplicity, particularly because the off-road wheels have to be easily removable.

Two six-stud shooters are also connected to the vehicle in this configuration, with a stickered console and a stud to place Albert between them. The turret rotates on a Technic pin and the stud shooters function properly, as expected, even though they are activated manually.

The titular Space Car is my favourite of the three vehicle designs. The off-road wheels become thrusters on the main vehicle, while the smaller wheels contribute to another rover. Providing a pair of vehicles in either configuration is great for play and swapping between them is relatively quick, as the wings of the mini shuttle and the rotating structure on top of the car undergo minor changes.

Unfortunately, the rover is incredibly basic and lacking in detail. The model consists mainly of Technic pieces and its shape is distinctive, but there are no controls of any kind, nor anything resembling an engine. These are essential features and I think Mr. Oz looks silly when seated on top without them.

By contrast, the Space Car looks excellent. The car at its core remains easily identifiable and I like how the designer has used the wheel arches to attach the weapons and wings, as though the wheels have transformed into those features. Moreover, the proportions of the engines on the back and the stud shooters situated towards the front are nicely balanced.

The shud shooters are activated manually by rotating the launchers, which is fine, but not as effective as a gear behind each six-stud shooter would be. Nevertheless, the textured wheels work well as housings for the stud shooters and the wings further back are attractive too. Their angle can be adjusted and I prefer them tilted down slightly, as shown in these images.

Moving the wings also adjusts the outermost engines, which look superb in their cluster. The articulated arm and communication dish are welcome details too, again providing a space for Albert to control these systems. This version of the robotic arm is longer than that on the rover and thus able to reach beyond the spacecraft, similar to the Canadarm on the Space Shuttle.

Overall

71475 Mr. Oz's Space Car provides an enormous degree of play value, between the different vehicles. None are flawless and certain compromises to accommodate alternative models are noticeable, particularly with the mini rover. Nevertheless, the three main vehicles each possess their own character and switching between them is quite easy, which has not been true for all DREAMZzz sets.

In addition, I am pleased to see Mr. Oz and Albert in a smaller and far less expensive set than 71460 Mr. Oz's Spacebus, given their importance in the animated series. Even the squid-like Nightmare Creature is unique and looks brilliant! For the price of £24.99, $29.99 or €29.99, I would definitely recommend this set.

From start to finish, this set review was one wild ride. 10 year old me would've loved this set.

By in Netherlands,

This is a good direction for Dreamzzz , and I think a much nicer value set compared to 71458 : Crocodile Car (bigger, but not strictly "better") , which is 110% higher price at €63 vs €30. (when looking for a playset with a car in this theme)

I kinda want to Dreamzzify some of the speed champion sets... maybe combine with some space sets and my daughters friends for splashes of wild color?

I’m getting 5th Element vibes from that flying car… cool!

I don't know how well the Dreamzz range has sold for LEGO in general, but in my shops there is no interest in them. We have had them on sale since before Christmas and they are still there now, so we won't be stocking the range anymore

Most previous DreamZzz sets are appealing due to their wackiness. However this one just strikes me as a bit boring, almost like they used up all their creativity last year.

I’m not a huge fan of this set but my brother loves it really the only thing I like is Mr. Oz’s body it would make an amazing Iron man suite.

By in France,

@CapnRex101 : the small rover may look a bit disappointing because I think you overlooked a feature. The car turret can be removed and attached to the rover, making it look like a lightweight recon vehicle. It's not obvious from the manual, I found it from one of the images at the rear of the box.

The only bad thing is Jayden being a repeat figure (also being worst Dreamzzz figure).

This is an awesome set, my favourite from this wave.

"Is this the kind of car a secret agent drives?"
"No, this is the kind of car a middle school teacher drives."

Also, according to Ashnflash, the purpose of the rover is to place the crane from the space car on top.

I really want this! It looks amazing! Since it's one of the cheaper Dreamzzz sets, I might ask for this for my birthday as a money-saving measure.

And yes, @lordofdragons , I agree. Jayden is a very uninteresting figure who I already have one of and really don't want another.

The problem I have with most of the Dreamzzz sets, while creative, they lack any context without the TV series. Otherwise, they're a mish-mash of ideas and characters. That doesn't really make them very appealing.

This set is somewhat better as it has more relatable subject matter.

I’ve probably missed something, but what is the point of a windscreen that you can’t see through?

Mine neither. I admit I was sceptical about the DreamZzz theme from the beginning, but I just bought 71453 for half price and that set was truly awesome imho.
This one otoh doesn't cut it for me. Somehow too realistic/technical for such a creative and outlandish theme.

By in Poland,

This set looks interesting to me as a Space fan, however I fear that once I buy this, I'll want to buy the entire theme, but my Lego budget is already reserved for the remainder yesteryear's City Arctic theme and this year's City Space theme.

At least the show is both available free online and pretty well written. What sets it above Ninjago and Chima in my opinion is that it doesn't rely on cheesy humor for appeal.

Dreamzzz? Well written? No, sorry. Its one of the weakest TV series Lego made. First half episodes are neither funny or interesting, it gains some momentum in later episodes, but it still have way too many fillers.

Ok? Not every set is for everyone, and that's fine...

Definitely gonna be picking this one up! I love the Space Police III-esque look it has, and the minifigures are really cool! I also LOVE that pearlescent windscreen.

Even though this is not a set I like, I still try to find positives (mostly the interesting parts) but I’m really struggling with this one. The windscreen is kinda cool I spose. The car just looks bland. This year’s Dreamzz stuff definitely not as good as last years.

I agree. However, the brain in a vat is crazy good.

This theme is starting to remind me of Nexo Knights and Galaxy Squad. The 'bad' ships, builds, and figs are awesome. The 'good' guys are lame. There aren't enough bad guys in this wave.

The figs in this one are nice except the filler/sleeper.

I think this wave mainly focused on some cheaper sets, as the villains from 2023 are still fully available, and a good-guy location with the Sandman tower (which has a great figure selection as a standalone set)

But this wave does introduce the "Never Witch" , so hopefully she gets a big location set next wave (sandman tower suggests something Spider themed), as the Nightmare king already has 2 big creature+ship sets.

I do hope in the long run, it won't feel like Nexo Knights in terms of the main characters getting vehicles (including big creatures) over and over , that theme had great location sets but only a few.

Overall, the theme only just launched in August, so hopefully if there will be a summer wave, it'll be less hero vehicles, and more villain places, as currently there have been none.

Ninjago seems to focus on mid sized mechs now, Monkie Kid just released some big Mechs , and quite a few dragons in both. So I do hope Dreamzzz will for now, stay away from that a bit, and perhaps a more fantasy approach (altho each main character seems to have their own approach in terms of style :

Oz - Space
Izzie - Cute Creatures like bunny / narwhal
Zoey - Fantasy Plant/Feather animals
Matteo - Zblob transformer vehicles
Cooper - Racing vehicles

By in Netherlands,

Come on people don't turn Jayden into the Jar Jar of Dreamzzz.

Thanks for the review.

Now that it's mentioned I wonder if they'll even make Mr Oz's 'unremarkable'
car from the series. Would be a good excuse to include a Mr Oz with the classic Space sweater and maybe microfig Albert.

But to stick to this set: the car reminds me of Sunstreaker from Transformers G1. For me that's a plus. I wish Albert could sit inside the car too without modification. Now he feels like the R2D2 of the set.

But I think this will be my first Dreamzzz set: cool car, funny villain, someone to rescue and a cheaper way to get Mr Oz and Albert figures.

This set looks awesome. Who wouldn’t want a sports car rover spaceship?

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's weird that they've put Jayden in so many sets. He isn't nearly that important on the series.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not interested in the minifigures as they are, but I really want to get it now to get the fishbowl, brain minifig head, and the torso into one fig that would look pretty cool.

Car look great with all the add-ons. I'll make it a space taxi, if I ever get one.

Is this a 4+ set? Looks horrible imo.

Swear I'm gonna end up with an army of Jaydens by the time this theme gets cancelled even if this is the last wave. The other 2 are great though! Glad I don't have to Bricklink them or get the Spacebus anymore.

Done.

J-lame/sleeper = Jar Jar.

It will take another15 years and 3 more themes before J-lame becomes the cool ol' school reference in NJ cyber-pirate-steampunk city set

. J-lame = Bionicle + 15 yrs.

I'll just wait for season 4 where Jayden seems to be the Chosen One, but in the end it is revealed that the Chosen One is actually Izzie.
