Review: 60404 Burger Truck

Posted by ,

It seems LEGO City is being taken to extremes in 2024, between the new Space range and 60404 Burger Truck. This model is definitely distinctive and perhaps less realistic than equivalent trucks produced before, although I find its eye-catching design very appealing.

The burger-shaped structure looks excellent and can be detached to become a separate burger stand, while the actual truck is impressive too. In addition, both minifigures are new and I was surprised to find no stickers required, as any decorated parts are printed!

Summary

60404 Burger Truck, 194 pieces.

60404 Burger Truck achieves a perfect balance between realism and fun

  • Colourful and fun design
  • Varied options for display
  • All elements are printed
  • Excellent minifigures
  • Interior lacks detail
  • Only one burger accessory

Minifigures

The operator of the burger van is suitably dressed, featuring an apron with the same flaming burger logo as her vehicle. The matching black trousers look superb and I like the sleeveless design as well, alongside white gloves for handling food. Maybe a black cap would have been preferable to red, although red does complement the flame imagery above the burger.

A customer is also included and includes an uncommon torso, only previously found in 31141 Main Street. The denim jacket and record design on the shirt underneath look great. However, this minifigure's most eye-catching feature is certainly the cochlear implant on the hair element, which seems realistic. The same piece appears in 42613 Heartlake City Hospital Ambulance.

It is easy to see why the customer is grinning, considering the size of the burger! The stack of ingredients is comically huge and looks marvellous, even though the burgers from the Scooby-Doo range were a little more manageable. The printed bun is similar though, using a 2x2 round tile rather than a 2x2 slider on this occasion, but still featuring some seeds.

The Completed Model

The burger van is quite compact, although matches the likes of 60384 Penguin Slushy Van and includes plenty of detail. The contrast between the black truck body and the vibrant burger stall is effective and I like their different sizes as well, which really gives the impression that the van was adapted to accommodate the burger stand.

That difference in width between the back and the front also helps to distinguish this van from others produced before, notably including the Penguin Slushy Van. After all, the shape of their bonnets is similar, each using 2x2 corner curved slopes, but the trucks' overall silhouettes look completely unique.

Unfortunately, there is only one seat positioned centrally inside the cab, with a yellow steering wheel. Another seat could definitely have been added, but only providing one does not really bother me because there is little need for a second minifigure. The cab roof can be removed easily for access and the vehicle also features functional doors, which are always nice to see.

2x6 tiles are attached to the sides of the van, decorated with flames. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that these tiles are printed and they resemble side skirts, bringing the truck close to the ground and further differentiating this model from others. The sign advertising burgers is printed as well and folds down to cover the serving window when the van is driving around.

These printed elements were unexpected and the same is true across a number of new City sets, such as 60400 Go-Karts and Race Drivers and 60402 Monster Truck. I wonder whether printed parts will be standard in 5+ sets from now on. Regardless, this sign looks great and the whole burger stand is brilliantly colourful, including a stack of ingredients similar to the burger accessory.

Medium nougat was a fitting colour choice for the bun and the tan 1x1 round tiles representing seeds on top look superb. The ingredients underneath are interrupted by a black panel and the door, which is accessible for minifigures thanks to a 1x4 fence component forming a step on the back of the van.

Alternatively, you can remove the burger stand from the van. The stand looks equally good on its own and this option is very welcome, while the van also looks reasonable, given its uniform colour scheme. A few mechanical details on the truck bed would have been ideal, but there are no unsightly colours revealed underneath the burger stand, at least.

The top of the burger detaches to reveal the interior, which is sparser than I had hoped. The reddish brown 2x2 round plate representing a patty works well and a printed dial denotes the grill, although this could be more detailed. Moreover, there are no other ingredients inside, nor anywhere to store them. However, a bottle of ketchup and a card machine are present at the serving window.

Overall

The most enjoyable LEGO City sets strike a careful balance between realism and wackiness, which 60404 Burger Truck absolutely achieves, in my opinion. The bold design of the burger stand is appealing and contrasts well with the van, although the flame details on this vehicle ensure the two halves of the model appear cohesive.

Furthermore, the two minifigures provided are fantastic, maintaining the high standard we have come to expect from City minifigures lately. I do think the detail inside could be improved and a second burger accessory would have been splendid, but this is otherwise a satisfying set. Also, the price of £17.99, $19.99 or €19.99 is fair, so there is little to dislike about the burger van.

This could be cool to mod and color-swap to make other food trucks

No fries to go with the burger? Pity.

By in United Kingdom,

That’s disappointing. You really need a bit more stuff on the inside for a model like this.

I foresee those printed flame tiles being popular! Neat little set!

That’s a f… huge burger.

I love the “Rollercoaster Tycoon” vibes of this set. Big fan of the employee minifig, the white gloves with the lack of sleeves looks great.

I feel it’s time for them to produce a slightly smaller, bespoke “Hamburger”/“Sandwich” piece, though. I know the average burger you get in a pub is super huge these days, but this is taking things to a ridiculous level!

I already wanted this set to add to my fleet of food trucks, but the fantastic minifigs and well done design have really cemented it in my Want List.

By in Germany,

Unfortunately the prints are very weak, which limits their usefulness. Still better than stickers, though. Agree that they could have thrown in a second burger tile. I also can't shake the feeling that a more "crunchy" color like the new Sienna Brown would have been more appetizing plus it would have been fun if perhaps there was the typical gradient coloring in the bun from pale (Tan) to the toasty parts.

By in United States,

What is the purplish layer in the burger supposed to be, maybe red onions?

By in United States,

Oh so this IS a space set. In disguise.

It’s a more basic remake of 6927 All Terrain Vehicle from the early 80s. One of my favorite sets. Too bad this doesn’t have some clever loading/unloading mechanism like that set. That would make it perfect!

By in United States,

This is one of those burgers that you get for free if you can eat the whole thing in under 30 minutes. Back in the day you'd also get a Polaroid of yourself pasted to the window, but now you just get featured on their Instagram feed.

Burger should have been dot size, scale too unrealistic. That would have allowed for more burgers as well, because Lego always includes duplicates of dots. Needs some detail inside the truck too, even if it meant more printed tiles or stickers.

By in Netherlands,

Pretty decent set at a decent price, overall great design even when lacking a bit in detail. And great to see prints! Even when the print quality seems a bit lacking, still so much better than stickers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

We need a modified plate with a central stud with bar edges all around (forming an octagon the thickness of a 2x2 plate), and 2-thick round tiles with hole that can be printed on the sides and could be used to connect the two plates (this being "sandwiched"). Such parts could have countless other uses, but would immediately make for great burger set-ups.

I quite like the lack of interior detail - less small bits to get lost, which is always a drawback of detailed play sets. I can see a couple of these making their way into our house: one for the burger truck & one for a stand and truck to modify.

Or beetroot.

Anyway, i probably won't be getting this set. It's just too goofy and unrealistic looking. If it was in the format of 60384 or 60345 (which i have), i would pick it up.

Great review. I love how the stand works very well on its own, as with the truck. I don't really mind the empty interior but it really does need another burger or two to stay in business

I was thinking the same thing! Building its kiosk friends like a cotton candy, drinks or fry stall would be fun. It works very well in an amusement park setting.

By in United States,

Love this set. I was shocked when I opened the box and couldn't find a sticker sheet! I like both figures and always love new hair molds. The interior of the burger stand definitely needs some more detail, though. No mustard bottle, fries, or grill detailing was disappointing to me but everything else in the set is perfect.

In New Zealand (and I think Australia too, but i could be wrong) you can get your McDonald's burgers with pickled beets (like Maxbricks states) instead of pickled cucumbers.

Not on the regular menu, we just have pickled cucumbers. But there are limited edition burgers such as the kiwi burger (exclusive to NZ) where it has beetroot, or the Aussie Angus, (exclusive to AU) which also contains beetroot.

Agreed. From the bottom up it should be burger, cheese, tomato, onion (the purple layer is a red onion in my mind), lettuce.

I know how to make a burger only from Spongebob:
Bun, patty, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, bun in that order!

(If i got that order wrong at all, I blame Bubblebass.)

By in United States,

yep, Kiwi Burger was what I was thinking of! It was 20 years ago that I was in NZ, and I believe Kiwi Burger also had a fried egg on it, right?

It was also surprising that the NZ McDonald's had the equivalent of a Whopper called a Megafeast, which the US does not.

I feel LEGO is starting to take the piss out of handicapped people. Like if they give the figures a disability it better be seen by all.

That is a huge stretch. There have been a higher proportion of female minifigures and minifigures with disabilities in recent sets, but how can that be anything other than a positive? There are plenty of minifigures of all kinds in the January City range alone.

It does make me think though: We already knew Lego City was a crime infested place, but considering the number of people (and even animals!) with disabilities it also seems rather dangerous, and the health care might be lacking quite a bit. Or if they were born that way, Lego might have to up their quality standards ;-)

Like @TheOtherMike said, 75902 The Mystery Machine has a burger similar to this one. It's also 5 layers, but has a square unprinted patty. 75903 Haunted Lighthouse has the nice 3-layered round one you're referring to. Other than that, nice review!

The printed pieces are definitely a plus for me. I don't have any of the other food trucks, but I'll try to pick this one up.

I don't get this. With that logic they shouldn't include any detail, or even small bricks.
Personally, I'd prefer more detail, but don't mind the lack of it too much.
