Review: 30664 Police Off-Road Buggy Car
Posted by CapnRex101,
The annual Police range is unusually interesting this year, featuring some fantastic vehicles and even a prison! There are also exclusive wanted poster tiles available in each set, including this polybag, 30664 Police Off-Road Buggy Car.
That printed poster and a new minifigure make for an appealing polybag.
Summary
30664 Police Off-Road Buggy Car, 35 pieces.
While not outstanding, this polybag provides ample play value and the new poster
- Simple and effective buggy
- Unique wanted poster
- Good minifigure
- No criminal to chase
Minifigure
LEGO introduced vibrant yellow a couple of years ago and this police officer takes advantage, wearing a nice high visibility jacket. The metallic silver strips seem realistic and the chequered pattern on the back looks great as well. Perhaps some pockets could have been printed on the legs, but plain dark blue also works.
The same torso appears in three larger Police sets and this head is familiar too, belonging to Chase McCain originally. I like to imagine it still depicts Chase now, so the character has also travelled to space, become a helicopter pilot and joined the fire department within the January City range alone!
However, the accessory is more interesting than the minifigure because this decorated wanted poster is exclusive! The number on the poster suggests the element may also appear in a set numbered 60416, although that set could have been cancelled. Regardless, the design looks superb and displays a criminal from 60419 Prison Island. Posters in the same style are found across the new Police range.
The Completed Model
The off-road buggy shares the police officer's colour scheme, featuring dark blue and vibrant yellow bodywork. This model is relatively basic, although its large tyres look excellent and the vehicle's whole shape is appealing, thanks in particular to the harness component used around the cockpit.
There is room to seat the minifigure and the back of the buggy is fairly detailed, featuring trans-red and trans-blue lights and a textured 2x2x2/3 brick underneath. This element is effective, as the engine or representing suspension between the rear wheels. The angled wing looks superb too, completing a serviceable police vehicle.
Overall
Considering this polybag only contains 35 pieces, I think 30664 Police Off-Road Buggy Car is quite enjoyable. The vehicle is unremarkable, but includes all the necessary features and I like its colour scheme, which is consistent with the other new police sets. Additions like the lights on the back greatly enhance the design.
Of course, the minifigure and the exclusive wanted poster are the primary draws to this set for older LEGO fans. The poster is especially desirable and I am pleased to see one of these tiles available in a polybag, even if it later appears elsewhere.

The model is cool, but with barely anything in the set it's kinda forgettable. Really don't have any desire to get this.
Cute buggy for kids, but that’s about it. Getting a printed piece in a polybag is nice, tho.
There's something kind of funny to me about how both City polybags this year use that harness piece (the space hoverbike uses it too).
Love the neon torso, but it's weird the poster points to set 60416 which does not exist somehow ( 60415 and 60417 are 2024 Police sets too)
Very good sized vehicle for a polybag, and the change to red/blue police lights is a change of direction but fits the new black/white and blue with neon yellow color scheme. (like a bit of a hybrid between European and California (first US livery scheme I could think of) police now, instead of pretty much very European police vehicle colors previously)
It would be more believable if it was a civilian beach buggy. Defun(d) the Police!

It's just a little car for little kids to race through their living rooms. Let's not forget Lego is still primarily aimed at kids, even if you tell yourselves it isn't. ;-)
For what it is, and certainly for its price point, this is a fine little set. 'Forgettable' perhaps for the older kids, like us, but I'm sure it'll make a lot of happy memories for loads of youngsters out there. If I come across this set, which I'm fairly certain I will, I'll be picking it up, as I usually do with these polybag sets.
@CapnRex101 Isn't that wanted poster Rex Fury, one of the villains from Lego City Undercover game?? So it would tie in with that maybe being Chase McCain...

I’m not complaining! It’s a polybag, it really should be for kids with a bit of pocket money *first*. I’m just looking at it from a personal perspective; it’s not for me and that’s fine.

Nah, this is the grey-haired crook from 60419 (Rex Fury had a much different look with scars, different eyes, and different hair/facial hair).
Day 999 of silently waiting for Lego to release an Adam-12 set. I have connections.
This guy is a busy man. He appears in 36 sets as a police officer, recreation vehicle driver, an explorer, an astronaut, a speed champions driver, a street sweeper, a vegetable grower, a video game character and a fireman. But that's not all!
Poor version of Buggy 60145

I've lost count of how long I've been waiting for Lego.com to carry polybags as something other than GWPs. I wish I had connections.
From a distance I didn't notice it was a police vehicle. I guess I still expect a lot more regular blue and white.
In fact, this is a great racing buggy.
And you know what? If this had been just a regular racing vehicle with a number on the hood it might have even hit that nostalgia button for me as it would have been like something you would see in the 90s.
I kind of like it for what it is!
So overall; I think it's a good design. Just a bit sad that it HAS to be police. What sort of police even uses dune buggys complete with sirens? What is this hyperspecialisation, Star Wars?
I'm probably going to be corrected by the mention of some sea-side county that actually does use Police dune buggys though ;)
In the UK its available as part of a mixtray at Tesco stores for £3.50 for anyone wanting it.
Must have polybag!!

Or is it more likely that he's just one of the world's only set of tri-deca-sextuplets?
If the buggy had some accessories (handcuffs, a radio, etc.) I think it'd be a bit more exciting. As of now .... eh.

"Come on lego you could at least put exclusive minifig there so us adult collectors had incentive to buy it.
(this comment is sarcasm)"
No kama, no cashola.
Some pretty good pieces in this little polybag. Found this one and others at my local Tesco the other week, been meaning to pick it up.
There might be a chance that criminal might get a polybag set.
