Review: 71049 F1 Race Car collectables
Posted by Huw,
In lieu of a new set of collectable minifigures this quarter we are presented with 71049 LEGO Collectables - F1 Race Cars instead.
The set of 12 miniature cars comprises one from each of the ten teams on this year's starting grid, plus two generically styled vehicles.
Summary
71049 LEGO Collectables - F1 Race Cars - Complete, 348 pieces.
Cute, but buying one will be sufficient unless you're a die-hard F1 or CMF fan.
- Printed pieces
- Disappointing generic helmet print
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
Anatomy
Construction-wise, they are all identical, consisting of new chassis and front wing pieces, printed nose cone and rear spoiler tile specific to the team, printed wheel rims, and a handful of other elements.
The helmets are the same design as those found in the Speed Champions sets but, inexplicably and very disappointingly, they are not printed with team logos but with a generic design instead.
A white head inside the helmet attaches to a 1x2 tile with a long stud in the centre, which is an element normally found in Minecraft sets.
The completed models
The helmets are totally out of scale with the cars, but I suppose they are quite cute in a chibi sort of way.
Williams
McLaren
Aston Martin
Haas
Generic F1 vehicle
Red Bull
F! Academy
Ferrari
Sauber
Mercedes
Alpine
There's no much to say about them individually, but the Alpine is noteworthy because it has different colour wheels front and back.

Verdict
Kids who are into Formula 1 will be all over these with their pocket money, but I don't think they will hold much appeal to adults. Essentially, once you have one, you have them all, especially since the one thing that might have made them more appealing -- a helmet printed with the team's logo -- is absent.
They are quite endearing I suppose, but I, like most of you I suspect, would have preferred a set of F1 driver minifigures.
Do you plan to collect them all?

Curious that they ended up with a F1 team called 'Generic' .
Is the Generic Teams generic helmet design still worthy of the criticism of being too generic?
Personally Im all for generic helmets. Let people get the fancy ones in the fancy sets, these ones have amazing customs capabilities and theyre cheap and readily available. Im really happy with these and intend to pick a couple up to make some cool sci fi custom figures!
Just my perspective anyways.
I found some early at a local store. They are very durable and I am thinking about collecting them all. They kind of remind me of the little football helmets that they make which my cousin uses to line up for the playoffs. I also wonder if they will release Audi and Cadillac in poly bags next year.
Will probably get the top teams.
Maybe a full grid, if they get discounted.
Not getting the generic or academy cars though.
Regarding the helmets, I don't mind them.
Team logo helmets are in the Speed Champions sets so available if wanted, more variation in them would have been nice though.
And I agree, the actual drivers would have been preferable as well.
I will get them all as I have every "collectable minfig" with the excption of Mr. Gold. But I am dissapointed.
"Do you plan to collect them all?"
No.
I might get one just for the heck of it, most likely the Ferrari (for the prints) or the Alpine (because I like the colour scheme), but that's about it. The generic helmets are a major let down imho.
Oh, the chassis isn't made of more parts like I thought. I'd assumed there were about the same number of pieces as a make and take build from a store, or nearly as much as a small polybag. I'm less likely to buy any now, I think.
Happy there's a CMF series for car fans. Which I am not, so I don't have to hunt down highly sought-after castle figs for a change, and awkwardly scan dozens of boxes while getting weird glances from people around me. Curious how well these'll sell, though.
I'm not an F1 fan, but I'm planning on picking up a handful or two of these specifically for the generic helmets to use on some space figures. The printed slopes and front wings are nice bonuses.
Not sure how to feel about the big piece for the main body. I kinda wish it was made of "normal" bricks, but there might be something interesting to do with that chunky thing.
Kinda boring when you consider this is replacing a usual wave of licensed minifigures. That's not to say there won't be interest, there will be, but for me it's a downgrade. That said, I think the chassis is interesting and a new mold is always welcome...prints are nice. The strength of the Speed Champion F1 line is the wide variation of pieces and build techniques used to achieve a series of cars that share a general shape language. Here, aside from color, there's almost no variation.

exactly the same here. I'll get one so I can try to use the chassis for a cool but of a MOC, kinda how I use https://brickset.com/parts/4523339/motor-1x2x2-3, but I have no interest in collecting them, or really any of the other pieces.
Do they have a pull-back motor? I'm guessing not as it wasn't mentioned in the review, but when these were revealed I thought that's what they would do with these.
An easy hard pass from this ‘die-hard F1 fan’.
I like that F1 Academy is getting a bit of love here, even if it's just a CMF car.
It'd be cool to get some proper Academy sets, but considering the cars look so similar to the main series I don't know how well they'd sell.
It's also an area where the lack of driver's licenses is sorely missed. The F1 Academy drivers NEED all the exposure they can get, Lewis Hamilton isn't hurting for fans.
Apparently the generic helmets are because of the RB and VCARB with their Red Bull logo's? With the Speed Champions those are 18+ whereas the others are 10+, but obviously that doesn't really work with blind boxes....
Apart from that, I think they are fine for what they are, and might just pick up one or two whenever I don't find anything else interesting at the toy store. Certainly not gonna get them all....
I do think it's a missed opportunity that the new base doesn't have a pullback motor, like they did with the Shell polybags about 10-15 years ago. That would make them even better toys.
And I'm kinda surprised the review doesn't show the instructions......which based on what I've seen from RacingBrick are unlike any other instructions....
(effectively turning these in pretty advanced builds actually!)
Oh, and having that generic and F4 Academy car in this series is rather random......couldn't they have done something more interesting instead?
@Huw, are they in blind bags or boxes? If so, are the bar codes scannable to reveal the car identity within?
I'm not a F1-guy, but I lke the helmets. I think I'm going to buy one only, either McLaren or Sauber.

Is there rumors of more LMP cars being released? Historically, the SC polys echo a full size model. So hope there is a full size Ferrari LMP car coming.
As far as the the series, I will pick up a couple. Ferrari, Alpine, Mercedes, and Aston Martin.

An Audi v Cadillac poly could be fun actually, especially if they do a little starting line to scale.
They’re not minifigures so my completionist brain feels no obligation to collect these. At least the Unikitty series was built figures, but I don’t even display those alongside my CMFs. As with others, expect I’ll get one just because, either Ferrari, Mercedes or the generic F1 car. Unfortunately due to my brain telling me I do need to be buying minifigures, I’m now trawling eBay to make up full sets of previous series instead - which will probably cost several times as much as a normal series! Thanks, LEGO!
At first these reminded me of the 2009 McDonald's Racers that were nothing but a chassis piece, a mid-section piece, and a top layer piece. Not much to them, or even much that was Lego except that they connected using studs. This review has done little to change my mind, especially the specialized chassis universal to all of these. These are all the same chassis, with the same bits and bobs stuck on, just in different colors. The helmets would be cool to outfit each member of a sci-fi team, but otherwise a hard pass.
These kind of remind me of the Mario blindboxes, in that you get actual building parts instead of minifig parts and accessories.
Cute.
Now do CMFs of the actual drivers. We've seen it done before with the German national football team. Do it.

It would be fun to see this remixed with the usual blend of CMFs: an animal-themed car, a castle car, an ancient soldier car, a futuristic car, a sports-themed car, and a couple of cars themed on ordinary jobs.
Weird that lego didn't use OCTAN for the Generic F1 car
They look like they could be McDonald's Toys.

They're blind boxed and are popping up in the scanner app updates.
As an non-F1 fan, the generic helmets and other interesting parts are the main reason why I'm interested in these. If everything was branded they'd be useless to me.

Exactly my thinking. I in fact was pleased to see that these had generic helmets precisely for that purpose. I also find them quite cute and may make a little diorama for them, so I'll be looking for them on release day.
@Huw is there an anti-stud on the underside of the front wing? Just thinking that would be a great set of wings for a mech minifig.
The F1 academy is ghost spider formula 1 ??

Yeah, that would be fun indeed, but LEGO already kinda did that with 60458 Pizza vs. Fire Truck Race Car Pack.
Quite cute, but probably an either/or with the Speed Champions, so not for me.
LEGO certainly missed the "less is more" memo with all of the F1 BS this year.
Wakes up. Reads. Goes back to sleep. Mumbles, "seems kind of simple and boring for the poor kids."
Zzzzzzzz
Those green helmets would make great Halo Spartan helmets.

Boxes and almost certainly.
Absolutely zero interest in them for me as I'm not an F1 fan, and I can't see much use for the parts or printed tiles. I also don't know of very many kids who have an interest in F1 these days so I think these might bomb as a series.
I won't be getting any. It is nice they are trying something different as CMF have become rather boring aside from maybe 1 or 2 minifigs a year, but these are not for me. I think they would look better with no helmet at all, it is too far out of scale, with a bit more detail put into the prints instead.
These might struggle when sold next to £1.50 / £1.70 Hot Wheels.
Although my local WHSmith had a sign up saying "preorder a complete set now, selling fast" and are taking deposits. Presumably someone will be taking complete sets out their boxes to try to avoid ending up with the duds.
Awful.
Welcome back, Xalax
They should be pull-back like the Stuntz motorbikes were.
I might just go random pick for one of these - just for that 1x2 tile with long stud part!
Shame there wasn't a review for Series 27 CMF.
Why did Lego use a CMF series spot for these when they aren't even minifigures? That plus the fact they had to include some generic cars to fill the 12 "characters" per collection makes the whole thing too forced and awkward for me. I doubt when they crunch the sales numbers for this collection it will match or surpass the volumes regular CMF series get. I'm not a huge F1 fun so my prediction might be wrong but if I'm not then I hope Lego learns a lesson before trying a weird experiment like this again. CMF series is my favorite Lego theme and it saddens me this year they removed one spot to use on something that, again, doesn't even include minifigures. Why couldn't they do both things (i.e., have their collectible F1 mini cars series and also the usual CMF collection in May?)
Meh
I'm starting to think they've gone a little bit overboard with the F1 cars this year.
Just a tad bit...
I'm a massive F1 fan, watching if at all possible every practice session, F2 and F3 support series sessions and all the programming around a race weekend. And yet even I have absolutely zero interest in these. I could understand some polybags that would cater for a similar market to the one these are aimed at, and I think having a basic £10 car in the City line is quite nice. But I just cannot wrap my head around why anyone, other than those that have every CMF figure to date, would feel the need to get every last one of these. I can easily see these going on heavy, heavy discounts.
They're cute, honestly. The comparatively massive prefab chassis makes them quite uninteresting in terms of technique (except for the front wing piece; I foresee a lot of potential with that) but they look decent and would make good desk toys for sure.
This seems like one of those things that will pop up on Random Set of the Day in 10 years and most people will have forgotten all about them.
Those are cute--I wonder if they're compatible with Hotwheels tracks? That'd be something...
Got all 12 for all 12 nieces and nephews dor Christmas. Christmas shopping is done!
I came upon an issue where one scanned as the generic F1 but had the McLaren inside.

That someone would have to be a sorcerer. ;o)
I dor one am glad the helmets are more generic. Perfect for sci-fi minifigs, and also probably the only reason any AFOL in their right mind will actively search for these
I was disappointed when the rumors started last fall, but these are some of the sets I'm most excited for. It's Xalax 2.0. There's a collectibility factor that we really haven't seen since Bionicle G2 ended, besides the $27 F1 sets that are too expensive to get all of for most people.
The build is more simple than I'd like. I was hoping for something like the Speed Champions polybags. But these are fun.
F1=NASCAR=Yawn

I'm a CMF-fan since day 1. I don't even know if I need a single one...

Even weirder if they end up as random minifigure of the day.
I quite like these, and can definitely see uses for some of the prints.
I feel the generic helmets are a good thing and open up for possibilities for MOC usage.
It's a unique and, dare I say, cute concept. But the lack of some form of originality hurts here. Like most everyone else here I too would have rather seen a set of drivers (a mix of current drivers AND classic drivers like Senna, Lauda, Prost, Fangio, Jackie Stewart, etc.).
Unless these sell, as a whole series, like hotcakes, I can only see them as a lost opportunity.

They aren't CMF, so CMF collectors won't feel the need to get them.
Wait, these are eating up the second CMF slot for 2025? Not cool.
Anyways, new handlebars will plug into hollow/recessed studs on a 1x3 spacing. Front ends look disproportionately large, like Tooned Hot Wheels. I may get a full set and strip the cladding to make go-karts, but the chassis doesn’t interest me. The return of the neck tile is neat, but are they all black?

Unikitty didn’t fit within the CMF release schedule, though. Same year we got 41775, we also got 71020, 71021, and 71022. The packaging was also completely different from both the old packets that preceded it, and the new ones that followed. Mario also doesn’t eat up CMF slots, and they’re six series in at this point.

Xalax 2.0 is just my thought on it. A little less fun since the drivers aren't as fun, but the parts are pretty nice.
Can confirm there is an antistud.
Also I've got the complete set except the McLaren and think they're great. I'll replace the helmet with some studs, mix the build up a bit and start making a grid.
I love 'em and don't care!
i'll pick up the Williams, Ferrari, and F1 Academy cars. the rest, we'll see how the packs' RNG plays out
I’m no avid F1 follower but regardless I find these woeful disappointing. I fail to see any redeeming feature for them. They wouldn’t be as bad if they were at least a driver minifig dressed appropriately for each manufacturer. These, these are pretty redundant.
I know some people would rather have a CMF series of F1 drivers, but it seems to me that those would only appeal to F1 fans and CMF completionists, whereas these can appeal to anyone who just wants a little car to play with. I know I'll be picking up a couple. Maybe I'll even spring for a box of six.

These helmets do lack the personality those lil guys had, but the Xalax cars themselves were pretty bad builds, compared to these or Tiny Turbos, or ESPECIALLY the Speed Champions polybags. 4579 was the only real set, and even that was painfully simplistic.
...wait, what if I put the Xalax "minifigs" in these and combine the best of both worlds?
Can confirm - The box scanning app I use scans the boxes successfully
Probably because I'm not really a racing fan, but I'm glad the helmets are generic. They can be repurposed much, much more easily this way.
These would have been awesome for McDonalds Happy Meals!
They're not for me, but the comment on "kids with pocket money" gave me a flashback to the Turaga in Bionicle and how I constantly think LEGO needs more pocket money sets. If I had such fun with some simple robot action figures as a kid, someone now is enjoying these racecar sets.
Winter Village go karts...
I quite like these as a fiddle-around-with-kinda-toy, but I'm not getting any because I don't want to support the blind boxes concept. Although preferences won't be as strong as normal blind boxes, just looking over these I already have some favourites. Red Bull (obviously) Academy (for the colours) and Ferrari (because Ferrari).
I want the white frictionless axle pins from these sets. Fun synergy when these toys make Bionicle Bahrag set a much cheaper to bricklink.
I like them and have bought a box to get them all. I will line them up alongside the larger ones. Yes, a real fig in colours preferable, but, we have that fig in the SC sets. Also, i guess licences and image rights ups that price, so, yeah, good for all involved

Picked up two, used Brick Search to get ones w/ red helmets so I could try them out with classic space minifigs.
The helmets look a little goofy, though, so I'll probably try them out with other minifigs and some sort of torso armor to see if they look better.
The cars are fun little desk toys, like other people have said. It'd be fun to see which ones I just get at random after this when I go grocery shopping.

Friction is what keeps the axle-pins from rotating. Without it, these parts will get out of allignment with the 2L axles that are used to represent other teeth. With friction, you can keep them all lined up in the same orientation.
I think the "generic" car is based on the FIA 2022 concept car

....which is never gonna work, since F1A now is their own F4 class with no proper path moving up from there. Or they have to join the regular (mixed) F3 and F2 competitions, which rarely happens. So now you have ladies already in their 20s still competing in F4...
(and when you think of it......that also means older, more experienced drivers are keeping younger talents that might actually have a future beyond F4 out)
It's good for getting some more attention (which in itself is a good thing!), but dare I say actually holds them back from moving up. At least the W series they had before was F3 based, so this is already a big step back.

71046-0, 71047-0, 71048-0, 71049-0...numbers say otherwise. The fact that no mid-year CMF series has even been hinted at also suggests this is a legit CMF wave. And they have the same packaging. 41775-0 had a one-off packaging design, strayed well outside of the CMF numbering schedule, and didn't take up one of the 2018 CMF slots.
Our local supermarket had them this week, with a 20 percent discount.

I saw a post on one of the Facebook groups that I'm in stating that the poster was able to snag a few early and YES, they are compatible with Hot Wheels tracks. Which took them from a mild hmmm, maybe if I've got a few spare bucks to HMMM, definitely something to keep in mind when I'm out shopping or need to meet a GWP threshold.
This is a no for me. But they could've made an exlusive golden one or something that you could look for. Or like a special version for an older model or team as a secret mystery thing. Lego used be good at that sort of stuff... :P

Oh no, the core part of the car is a big ugly piece... I didn't realized that until now.
I bought a couple of these cars (still have to open the boxes), but I think I will not repeat the purchase.

I thought of the exact same thing when these were announced.
I bought them all, but it would have been great the safety car and the medical car instead of the two generics.
I would have also been happy if the minifigures were legendary drivers with unique race car skirts like Race Car Guy in series 18.
