Star Wars Review: 75431 Lieutenant Galle Battle Pack
Posted by CapnRex101,
Caution; there is extreme nit-picking ahead!
The 327th Star Corps appears only briefly in Revenge of the Sith, executing Aayla Secura on Felucia. During this scene, the camera follows a Clone Trooper named Lieutenant Galle, who crosses in front of an AT-TE before joining Commander Bly and several other members of the unit, ready for Order 66.
At the absolute maximum, only fourteen members of the 327th are shown at a close distance, including Commander Bly, whose unique armour is easily recognisable. You can also identify Galle throughout the sequence because his pauldron is worn the same way as Bly's, with the shoulder cover on the left and the strap on the right. The other characters, with one exception, have theirs the other way around.
This is where the minifigures become relevant because their pauldrons are all worn on the left, meaning that they are actually based specifically on Lieutenant Galle, rather than the generic troopers. The pauldrons are easily reversed, as shown below, but that still leaves printed straps on the wrong side of each torso.
The reason for this 'mistake' is simple: the reference images often used for 327th Star Corps troopers actually depict Lieutenant Galle, including all the below. Some companies are aware of the distinction, including Hasbro, who recently announced an action figure specifically portraying Galle and have produced generic 327th Clone Trooper figures with pauldrons the other way around in the past.
I should also address the other Clone Trooper with his pauldron over his left shoulder. That is actually a duplicate of Lieutenant Galle's character model, featuring exactly the same battle wear on the armour. Of course, this means there is at least one generic trooper with his pauldron on the left to match the minifigures, but they are clearly in the minority.
Finally, some might rightly mention the 327th Clone Troopers featured in the prologue to the Siege of Mandalore arc in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They also wear their pauldrons on the left, but I expect that was for ease of production and these minifigures should be inspired by Revenge of the Sith, regardless.
Having said all that, I do not consider this a major issue. It would have been great to have both varieties of trooper included in the Battle Pack, though relatively few people seem to know of the distinction, so I cannot be too critical of the graphic designer. Now you are cursed with the knowledge of Lieutenant Galle as well.
Anyway, back to the relative sanity of the review!

Also only two ammo pouches on the bandolier. Should be three.
I actually really enjoy these more hidden reviews that go into the nitpicking details. If theres a review for the new juggernaut coming up, I hope we see one here, although the issues there are far greater and may be better suited to the main review article.

Indeed there are a number of small inaccuracies, but this article focuses on LEGO's use of the Lieutenant Galle reference images.

I have an article about 75413 Republic Juggernaut and its stability problems coming up tomorrow, before the full review later in the week.
If his pauldron is on the opposite shoulder as the rest of the troops, does that make him a Leftie? :D
yeah this an oversight but the lack of a fabric kama is much worse IMO
Consider myself a Star Wars super fan of over 2 decades but this hasn’t been the first time you’ve dropped a lore bomb that’s taken me by surprise, Capn.
Appreciate the added context, if it is admittedly the minutest of nits to pick.
I legitimately had no idea that any of the clones in the Felucia sequence except for Bly even had names. Learning new things about Revenge of the Sith even twenty years after it first released...!
Curious question, though: what story media was it that originally identified him by name and, more importantly, was it from the classic!EU or the Disney!continuity?
I'm glad I'm not alone in realising the regular clones have theirs on the right. It annoyed me that in BF2 they have them on the same side as officers!
Have I noticed this before? No. Do I really care? No. Did I thoroughly enjoy reading and learning more about these troopers? Yes!
Really like this "bonus" article!
So why is this article so far down the homepage? I mean, it's not a big deal, since there's a link to it in the 75431 review, but you have to click the "View More Articles" button several times to see it on the homepage. I'm just curious.
I've only watched Revenge of the Sith once (in the cinema, when it came out), and will be quite content if I never see it again in my life, but nevertheless I enjoyed reading this article! Keep the nitpicking coming!
Cap'n is the greatest! This is a fantastic article.
I noticed the wayward pauldron when I rewatched this scene upon hearing about the imminent release of this set.
I wondered if Lego would mess it up. I wondered if the good Cap'n would remark upon it. My expectations have been exceeded!!

I see it on the first page, in order with the date of publishing.

For some reason it previously had publishing date of June, 22nd, which has been amended.

I did not want both articles on the homepage initially because this one is really supposed to be a companion to the main review article, but now the review has been bumped down the homepage a bit, that is less important.

Also, no nose. No ears. Strange protrusion jutting out from the top of the skull, head is much too cylindrical. Terrifying swivel-claws instead of hands. Oddly square torsos, should be much rounder, contain internal organs. No knees, should have one on each leg. No ankles. One toe on each foot, should be five.
It's like they're not even trying to make this stuff accurate or realistic!
Fascinating stuff from Capn! This is interesting, and something I was unaware of. I don’t really mind it, but it is a bit odd nonetheless.
I had heard of Lieutenant Galle, but I never noticed that he looks different from other 327th troopers. Quite interesting article, but honestly it doesn’t bother that the pauldron is on the wrong side. I just want 327th clone troopers

In my limited Canadian military experience, Lieutenant is often pronounced "Left-tenant" for some reason. Perhaps someone took this too literally when developing the character??

They’re all holding their weapons right-handed in the images. They’re all cloned from the same individual. Presumably the only notable differences between one clone and the next are due to their individual personal experiences and training.
Sandtroopers wear them exclusively over the right shoulder, and the three colors have long been associated with rank. Military doesn’t do left-handed rank, so the only legitimate reason to switch sides is to rest the butt of a weapon with high recoil against it (assuming any Clonetrooper’s blaster produces enough recoil to even need additional padding over armor plating…or that padding the outside would make one iota of difference when there’s a shell of rigid armor directly underneath it), and we see three instances here where individuals are wearing them on the wrong side to use to absorb recoil anyways.
No, this appears to be a case where someone guffed it massively and mirrored the character model before modifying it for Bly and Gaffe, or someone guffed it on them first, or someone was allowed a little too much creative license for their own good. The awkward thing about this, then, is that they modeled all of them off of one of the few that was clearly a mistake. I’d very happily just adjust the minifig assembly to correct for the on-screen error, but you can’t do that because the torso’s backward as well. Well, there’s only one thing for it, then. I’m just going to have to give all of these guys heads that look like the standard Clonetrooper head, but with goatees.

old EU. I think it was the comic "Reversal of Fortune" / "Endgame“

Oh, cool. Thanks for the answer :D
It IS a major deal, because it shows once again that TLG fundamentally doesn’t care. If Hasbro is aware of the distinction and is getting it right, so too should TLG be. A little like the inaccurate number of pouches and lack of gap on the helmet stripe, it all adds up. Fox’s torso still haunts me. Is it really so hard to pay attention, and care enough to get it right? I agree this specific topic shouldn’t be considered a major issue, but it’s not just this. It’s this, and another thing, and another thing, and another thing.
