Vintage Sewing Machine announced as Ideas competition winner!
Posted by TheBrickPal,
Another day, another LEGO Ideas announcement! This time, the grand prize winner of the Timeless Creations challenge has been revealed: Vintage Sewing Machine by BrickStability.
As usual for Ideas competition winners, this model will be developed into a set, to be released at some point in the next year or so, I'd assume. But it's hard to say, since the backlog of sets in production - coming out of either review periods or challenges - just keeps growing!
View images after the break, and read the full article on the LEGO Ideas blog.
What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

Believe it or not, my teenager is a fan of both Lego and vintage sewing machines. This is right up her alley.
Hot Takes: This might be the least interesting/least "looks good on a shelf" Ideas set.
For a contest the 'Timeless Creations' was a good idea.... for what got through to the finals though, there wasn't anything particularly inspiring or shouting 'you need to have this'. This set, while very well done, was definitely the best display piece though.
Not my cup of tea, but this does look very nice!
Love how this looks, was probably my favorite of the bunch. That said, a lot of that is from those gold and chrome piecces, which will never look like this. So I wonder how much of the looks remain in the final model....
SINGER comes to my mind. My grandparents owned them.
that will Zing..er off the shelf!

Those "antique" gold chrome pieces look amazing on the images, however I must agree the end pieces will never look that good.
The set is an easy pass however.
"Hooray!", shout chrome enthusiasts, chrome enthusiasts who will remember and lament this day when the final product is revealed.
I guess it had the competition all sewn up!
(If you don't like my above joke, sew me!)
;-P
Not interested in this in any way, but that is some serious parts use and design, pure skill!
There is way too much decoration on the base. Surely that would all get caught as you pass fabric through the machine. I guess that could all be replaced by stickers instead and be more realistic. And I doubt they'll use chrome parts like this design.
I guess it is nice if you are into collecting old sewing machines and want a LEGO one, but it seems pretty niche.

On the real sewing machines, all that decoration was flat and painted on, so guessing this was the best way they could recreate it with bricks... and short of them making a printed tile or sticker, you'd have to do some kind of pattern with flat tiles to make it smoother which probably wouldn't look as good.

Sounds like you're thread-ening everyone. I suggest you put a pin in it, lest your puns unravel.
This is a very deserving winner, I look forward to seeing the final product!
For those pointing out issues with the silver and gold, I refer you to the recent F1 trophy's that were given an in-development process that made them nearly as shiny as chrome. I can't find the article now but there's hope...

No you didn’t!
We used to have a singer like this some years ago. Beautiful sewing machines. As a fan of the great British sewing bee I look forward to seeing this released and getting it.

Yep. Yep. Yep.
Give the number of sets that are making it to review, it seems odd that Lego are pushing for more sets by different routes like this.

I wonder in which set(s) that would be. All trophy's I see are in "warm gold", and that looks nothing like this. Drum laqcuered gold would probably be closest, but is nowhere near as shiny.
I like the look but I don't get al the decorations. All those edges would make using it impossible.

The article I couldn't find was because it is in the latest issue of Blocks - 131, p29/30. Vacuum metallisation.
Brilliant. That got my vote. It will need a sound brick to reproduce the very distinctive sound!

Ah, actual F1 trophies :-)
Even if they could use that proces in mass production, I doubt they would introduce so many pieces in an Ideas set.
@TheBrickPal:
Wikipedia currently has only five projects (not including this) that have been announced but not revealed. Of those five, only 21363 is really “overdue”, having been declared the winner in August 2024. The next set on the list was announced back in March. Current trend is for sets to release roughly one year after they’re announced.
@CCC:
I would assume the gold parts are meant to be a physical representation of something that would either be a sticker or a print on the real machine. Whether or not the placement of that gold deco is accurate, I couldn’t say (I did learn how to sew, both by hand and with a machine, but I don’t actually do it).
They just need to change the theme name from IDEAS to THINGS

And there’s suddenly been a serge of bad puns.
Very cool! I have two real ones from my grandparents. But I think LEGO will botch this up, as usual, by downgrading the scale, changing the metallic elements to plain grey and warm gold and make everything more colourful, because it has to appeal to 5 year old girls too, even though they never saw, let alone use, a vintage Singer in their life.

A-hem!
1. Beautiful design. No idea how many copies this will sell - except that I'm certain whatever the number is, it will be a lot more than some of the more dismissively negative folks here think, because as usual they have some difficulty differentiating (a) their own personal preferences from (b) the diversity of preferences across a very large global AFOL community. When I go to my local Lego store on release days once or twice a year, I'm always surprised by how many different kinds of sets folks are passionate about.
2. The bed (flat black and gold area) is indeed going to end up as printed tiles or tiles and stickers because (a) it doesn't look right unless it's flat, and (b) unlike the fan designer, Lego can of course design and print any tile or sticker design it wants.
3. As others have noted, there's approximately a zero percent chance that the final set has anywhere near this many metallic silver and gold parts. My guess is we'll see a lot of light bluish gray and pearl gold, with a few metallic parts here and there as accents.
4. The puns running throughout this thread are epic. Bravo!

Yes, they will absolutely design the 16+ set to appeal to five-year-olds.
I like it. And the build is beautiful AS IS.
So, naturally, LEGO's "professional" designers will come along and butcher it. And I'll end up not buying it as a result. As usual.
My grandmother bought a mid 1920s Singer treadle machine about a decade ago. The belt (at the time, we'd seen a tabletop example for sale nowhere) has given me a lot of headaches. That being said, it's really easy to work on--even compared to my own (my great-Grandma's late '50s Soryu/Kenmore). That machine needs everything rubber too.
Really great attention to the source material! Especially the gold-leaf.
Also, the black handled scissors are a nice touch. I think the go-to scissors for decades (and even I still buy a ton every time I find a pair cheap and in good shape) were the old all-metal Clauss, Wiss, and Acme scissors with black Japanned handles. Not exactly comfortable, though.... Tough, however. I have a pair of chrome-plated Shapleigh Hardware scissors from the '30s that are still going strong. They've cut stuff that would've likely wrecked my good Kai.
While the machine itself is very nice, those gold decorations looks total rubbish and is something I really hope Lego tones down and replaces with drum-lacquered and printed tiles. As many others points out, especially the work surface needs to be smooth and I think this applies to the rest of the machine body too. As-is it just looks like a bunch of rivets and grommets strewn around rather than a part of the machine, and reminds me of the worst of (non-lego) "steampunk" projects, totally overdone being all form and no function.

When I did my stint in the costume shop (already worked both scene shop and light crew, so I did a 1-credit independent study in the costume shop), they had two types of scissors. One had a bit of cloth or yarn knotted to one of the loops on the handle, and the other did not. If you ever used one of the knotted scissors on paper, they took the bit of cloth/yarn off the handle. Or they did it the other way round, I can’t remember. Whatever the case, first and most important rule you learned was which scissors to use on cloth, and which on anything else.
Does it come with the foot pedals?

Yeah, my mother made it very clear that her fabric scissors were never to be used to cut paper, on pain of... well, maybe not death, but she probably would have at least made the offender buy a new pair.

Yeah, I 100% believe that all the great chrome pieces will be replaced with pearl gold when it's actually revealed, and there will be much sadness.
A lovely set, here's hoping the final product can produce the tarnished appearance as well as the renders. Personally am looking forward to this set, it looks like a good build experience with a wonderful display piece at the end.
Congrats to BrickStability on the win and to the impressive pun enthusiasts above, all very creative! :)

Beautiful.
