Review: 3Dudes & Dad wall mounts
Posted by Huw,
What do you do when you run out of shelf space to display your models?
One option is to hang them on the wall, and to make it easy to do so, UK-based company 3Dudes & Dad has just introduced a range of mounts specifically designed for the purpose, and is offering Brickset readers a 15% discount.
On the face of it, the 3D printed parts are fairly simple, but each one has been tailored to hold a specific model securely on the wall, hooking into an appropriate part of the underside of the model.
Obviously, not every model is suitable for wall mounting, but most cars and many spacecraft can be, so the product range includes brackets for Technic and Speed Champions cars, Star Wars craft, Batmobiles, and Batwings.
Those below are designed for 75301 Luke Skywalker's X-wing Fighter, Speed Champions F1 cars, 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 F1 Car, and 42172 McLaren P1.
They are supplied with suitable screws and wall plugs although most of them need just one screw, so there's no possibility of affixing them askew.
The one for the Red Bull hooks onto a beam under the nose fin. That for the 8-wide Speed Champions F1 cars hooks under the front wheels.
They are well-designed, well-made and fit for purpose, and at £6-8 each, including UK postage, they won't break the bank.
Yes, you might be able to print them yourself, but you'd need to spend a good few hours honing the design before you could do so.
You can see the whole range and place your order at 3Dudes & Dad. Use the code BRICKSET15 at checkout for a 15% discount.
Thanks to 3Dudes & Dad for sending the samples for examination. All opinions expressed are my own.

Put up another shelf!
I cannot find in what kind of material these are printed in.
Shelves can be great! But some models are a bit wide, like a Millenium Falcon or the topside is probably the most interesting side (like the F1 models), hanging them like this might be the better/prettier option...

I suspect it's PLA+.
PLA+STIC??
:-))
I must admit I go for the shelf option although the Lego room is limited as there is only one wall where I can get a decent fixing into masonry, the other walls being metal stud / plasterboard and certainly not up to holding up my Modulars! Downstairs I have the 1/8 scale vintage F1 cars, on very wide shelves which were a lot of bother to put up (custom brackets / specially ordered timber planks as we wanted a 'rustic' look) but they do the job, as with all these things a serious dust trap though. I wonder if these brackets in allowing vehicles to sit 'nose up' would attract less dust but not sure if they could cope with the weight of the larger cars I have, especially using only one screw... I am guessing there is a limit on loadbearing capacity of the actual fixings and dependant on what they are being fixed into.

Would these work with regular Speed Champions cars?
@danieltheo, the weight of even the largest Technic cars is not going to stress a single screw into plasterboard. You need not worry!

A single screw will support the weight of the 1/8 cars but, for added security, all of our mounts for these models (other than the GT3), have two screws.
Could yoou add a picture of the bracket with Luke's X-wing? I'm guessing that wasn't possible as you don't own it
The Speed Champions mounts are intended for use with the 8-stud wide cars.

I found that command strips work better than any other product when it comes to hanging lego on a wall. A bonus: command strips, if used properlly, do not damage walls.
Just a word of warning for potential US buyers: You can't get them sent here, as nobody is shipping to the USA at last check due to tariffs and such.

Even couple of thumb-tacs will hold up a large model, which is what I use as they only leave a very small hole in the wall that can be painted over later with no need to fill/sand it. I use these with a large head and a ridge to lock onto the model. If needed I just add a bit of framework onto the underside of the model.

"What do you do when you run out of shelf space to display your models?"
I dismantle them, box them, and put them away.
When I run out of shelf space it means that I already have enough on display to look at and adding even more to other areas is just more clutter.

We are shipping to the US - our postage rates include the new tariffs

Ok, I stand corrected.
Only thing I can add is that with such a product I would not have had the mishap I recently experienced.
I have four Ikea Detolf display cases which I mainly use for my Modulars and similarly sized sets.
A couple of days ago I heard a strange noise from the room in the cellar where I keep my LEGO stuff. When I went down there to see what the reason for the noise had been, I saw that on one of the display cabinets the rear glass pane had burst for no apparent reason, and every set on every level of the cabinet plus the floor around it was full of tiny sharp glass particles. One level had one of the Winter Village sets on it and it looked as though it was covered in snow.
Problem now is how to get rid of all the broken glass, especially from all the sets covered in the stuff, without injuring myself.
Not a pleasant experience at all.
Unfortunately shopping from the UK is no longer an option after Brexit...

It shouldn't be very different, especially if the company you are buying from is VAT registered. In that case, they'd take off the UK VAT and you'd be charged your local VAT.

Put up another shelf!"
Take apart a few sets. Use the parts to build a new shelf to hold new sets. Use the parts to build a new room to hold the new shelves that hold new sets. Use the parts to build a new house. Use the parts to build life-sized versions of the old sets.
Bonus-points if those life-sized versions are, themselves, houses.
No thanks. Legos on display are a dust magnet. I prefer BPS: Build, Play & Store.

FYI - mounting against a plain white wall makes it look like someone just took a vertical picture of sets on the floor, lol. :o)

The screw isn’t the problem. What’s the loadbearing capacity of the plastic? How likely is the plastic to experience deformation/separation, as some forms of 3D printed materials often do? How easily is the material affected by temperature changes, particularly for people who don’t run air-conditioning?
@Murdoch17:
The issue wasn’t that nobody was going to ship here due to micro-tariffs (still the world’s largest economy, so people still want a piece of the pie). It’s that nobody was set up to roll that into the final total when selling stuff to US customers. Now that people have had time to modify their online shopping software, things should start moving forward again.
@AustinPowers:
Simple solution. Bribe…I mean hire someone else to do it for you.
@Huw Do you know off about good display solution for train aficionados? I have dozens and they no longer fit into my layout so I have been taking them apart and storing them. Normal shelves are not great- too deep and too much vertical space. Thanks!
Not wall mounted. Minimal dust relative to shelf mounting - less surface area exposed.
Our Chiron, Sian and Ford GT have been sat on their mounts, above a radiator, for nearly two years now with no sign at all of bracket fatigue. Our mounts are, if anything, over- engineered for robustness- no one wants a mount failure and a shattered LEGO model.
The issue with tariffs wasn’t the cost - it was simply that the postal services withdrew their offering until they’d built in provision for Delivered Duty Paid - which they now have. We just weren’t able to actually ship to the US until then.

It absolutely is. A significant proportion of our business is with Lego fans in the EU.

You’re not wrong - please send the same comment to j.bezos @amazon.com - it’s his policy, and he may be the only one amongst us with sparkling white floors!

Clear acrylic tubes, suspended from these (or similar) wall-mounts?

I've seen both. Many BrickLink sellers have backed out on orders I filed recently due to me being from the US and them being from tariffed countries, while I've also had something shipped from Canada recently but had to pay nearly the same amount as the seller's price to be able to receive it once shipped--a pretty significant stateside deterrent to ordering abroad. On one side or the other, US economic foreign policy is significantly discouraging trade even on an individual level.
Hanging DAD on a WALL??!!

Great thanks, yeah looks like a top down photo lol
I like the touch of molding the set number and name into the mounts, but I don't really have any real interest in any of these. I take my sets apart and store them, then rebuild them later when the mood strikes me.

At least he was there.
Now, he'll ALWAYS be there.
Just please don't hang a hat from his nose... or anything else!! ;)

I'd look at baseball bat display cases. They're popular for displaying Funko Pops and BrickHeadz. They might work for trains as well.

Man that's awful! For this you could try a wide, soft paint brush to gently brush off the glass particles. I always use it for dusting off display models but it should do the trick for this as well.

Crap!!! Hang in there.
Seriously, that's awful. I wouldn't wish that on the head of Lego Star Wars. :(
Maybe a vaccum with a screen over the nozzle to keep Lego from being sucked in?

I run Ikea Mosslanda shelves (the white 115cm long picture shelves) above my door frames along any walls I want to display the trains. I have multiple Orient Express sets displayed in a full train, and they look good, while not taking up much room. I use straight track sections on 2x8 blocks to lift the track up so the trains are more visible.
