Review: 40772 Luminous Ghost

Posted by ,

40772 Celebration Series: Luminous Ghost, currently the gift with purchase at LEGO.com, is the third in the series, following 40758 Celebration: Ferris Wheel with Fireworks and 40759 Celebration Series: Valentine's Day Box. I think it's fair to assume there'll be a fourth Christmas one released later in the year.

Summary

40772 Celebration Series: Luminous Ghost, 167 pieces.

This spooky spirit is a nice little GWP in the run-up to Halloween.

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

The apparition is portrayed in typical fashion, resembling someone under a bedsheet, with corners of material flowing beside them. It's attached to the base with transparent bricks to make it appear to be floating.

The shape of the eyes makes the face look quite scary, which is unusual in a LEGO set.

The spirit is not constructed with luminous bricks, unfortunately, so the 'luminosity' suggested in the set's name is provided by a light brick inside its body which is turned on using a lever at the base. It effectively produces a red glow through the 2x4 opalescent bricks behind the eyes and mouth.

The spectre is accompanied by a bat and a pumpkin, both of which are quite cool.

Even if you're not that enamoured with the model itself you may find some of the relatively rare curved pieces it useful, so, overall, it's a nice little GWP.

40772 Celebration Series: Luminous Ghost is available at LEGO.com until the 7th, free with all purchases over AU$195 / US$120 / £110 / €120.

Could be a lot better. The ghost looks like something I'd build with spare parts. I usually get the Halloween GWPs, but this year I'll pass

No photo of this set I've seen online really manages to capture how nice the glowing effect looks like irl, not even the box art. The opalescent pieces inside catch and disperse light perfectly, resulting in a very smooth and very bright red glow.

By in Netherlands,

I am thoroughly disappointed with the lack of facial hair on that pumpkin.

By in United Kingdom,

I grabbed this with an order recently; it might not be a must have but I’m a sucker for a light brick.

Would normally buy for Halloween, having seen this in-store passing and holding out for the rumoured Disney one at the end of the month.

Nice enough freebie. Got with 10361 + 88011 to make up the 1p short threshold (now on backorder... nice bit of foresight Lego!)

Luminous Bricks is my favorite rapper.

it's a GWP, so can't really complain

not something I'd spend money on

Extremely cute! Like last year's light-up pumpkin it looks like a great little decoration and a fun build. The use of the opalescent parts to help diffuse the light from the light brick (making the eyes and mouth glow more evenly than if they'd used regular transparent bricks) is really smart.

By in Germany,

At first I disliked it from the photos alone, but it is really nice in reality. Lots of
white bricks for other uses after halloween and thanks to the stack of opalescent bricks it glows quite nice.

Ugly. Lego, you can do much better, even for a GWP.
