Review: 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes' Attic
Posted by FlagsNZ,As revealed yesterday, 21363 The Goonies will be available at LEGO.com from 1st November.
During the first week of November, while stocks last, 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes' Attic will be available as a Gift With Purchase (GWP).
40773 The Goonies: The Walshes' Attic sets the scene for the whole Goonies trek to find One-Eyed Willy's lost treasure.
Read on as I review this necessary addition to the 21363 The Goonies set.
Summary
40773 The Goonies: The Walshes' Attic, 179 pieces.
The Walsh family attic was where the Goonies formulated their plan to search for One-Eyed Willy.
- This set fills in an important scene that is not included in 21363 The Goonies set
- Simple but well designed
- It could have included a Rosalita minifigure
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
The box
The image on the front of the box shows Irene Walsh, Mikey and Brand's mother, standing in the attic with a cleaning rag in her hand.
Irving Walsh, Mikey and Brand's father, is holding up a large, framed oil painting. There is some obvious damage to this painting, probably due to its age.
The rear of the box also includes an image from The Goonies movie where the four Goonies and Brand are looking at the map to One-Eyed Willy's treasure trove.
Instructions
The instructions come in one small booklet.
Sticker sheets
There are two small sticker sheets with this set.
Parts
The 179 pieces come in two paper bags.
Printed part
There are several small, printed parts, but the standout piece is this 2x6 printed black tile.
As seen below, it includes both the LEGO logo and the trademarked logo from The Goonies movie.
Minifigures
Both the Walsh parents are included in this GWP set. Both minifigure torsos originate from Harry Potter figures: Arthur Weasley and Marge Dursley. Both minifigures have alternate facial expressions.
Irene Walsh, Mikey and Brand's mother, was played by Mary Ellen Trainor.
Irene Walsh is wearing a light brown jacket over a patterned blouse. She comes with a scarf.
Irving Walsh, Mikey and Brand's father, was played by Keith Walker.
Irving Walsh is an assistant curator at the local history museum.
Irving Walsh is wearing a green jacket over a brown waistcoat and a checked shirt. Like many academics, he is wearing a bow tie.
The build
The attic as built at the end of Bag 1 and Bag 2.
The attic gets a mention in this scene where Irene Walsh speaks to Rosalita, the new Spanish-speaking housekeeper:
Now, Rosalita, this is the attic. Mr. Walsh doesn't like anybody up here, ever. I guess that's why it's always open.
Mouth [speaking in Spanish]:
Translation – never go up there. It's filled with Mr. Walsh's "sexual torture devices."
Irene Walsh famously adds:
This is my supply closet. You'll find everything you need – brooms, dust pans, insect spray... I would really like the house clean when they tear it down. Clark, can you translate?
Mouth: [speaking in Spanish]
If you do a bad job, you'll be locked in here with the cockroaches for two weeks without food or water.
Rosalita is not included as a minifigure in either this set or 21363 The Goonies. She played a key part at the very end of The Goonies movie and her absence is a disappointing omission.
Walsh family home
The Walsh family home is a Victorian property which was built in 1896. It is located at 368 38th St, Astoria, Oregon 97103.
This link takes you to Google Street View of the property.
For those Goonies fans who may make a pilgrimage to Astoria and the locations used during the filming of the Goonies Movie, most properties are privately owned. Please respect any signage displayed at the properties. Not everyone shares your nostalgic enthusiasm.
Building this set in stages
I have rebuilt the attic to highlight some of the design techniques.
The angled roof cleverly accommodates the chimney.
The chimney cap locks the roof plane in place. The image below shows the attic without any of the treasures stored there. You can see the handrail surrounding the non-functional trapdoor.
There is an old bottle, a white nanofig and a telescope on the floor. A small clock fell behind the handrail. A compass sits on the chest of drawers.
There is a Tesla plasma ball, and a knight's suit of amour added to the collection.
An old ship's wooden wheel hangs on the wall. Astoria was founded in 1811 and is the oldest city in Oregon. At an old seaport such as Astoria, you will always find old ships' lifebuoys in historic collections.
A tricorne hat hangs from the pillar. Mouth wears this hat in the movie.
There is a framed copy of the newspaper Astoria Legend. This front page would have been dated 30 November 1935. The image included in the newspaper is Chester Copperpot who went missing in the 1930s while looking for One-Eyed Willy's treasure.
There is also a framed treasure map in the attic. Chunk is deliberately given the framed map as Mikey knows he will clumsily break the frame.
There are two spiders in the attic. I believe they could be cross orbweavers.
There is also an old poster for the Lighthouse Diner with a suggestion to try the Veal Scalipini. This is a spelling mistake as it should be Veal Scalopini.
The pirate portrait
In the Walsh attic is an old framed oil painting of a pirate abducting a damsel in distress. The pirate may have been One-Eyed Willy before he lost one eye. The canvas is obviously damaged.
In the Goonies Movie, Mouth pokes his tongue through the hole in the canvas.
With the Mouth minifigure standing on the picture frame, his tongue lines up perfectly with the hole in the painting.
Here is a short clip showing this scene.
The attic scene from The Goonies Movie
This four-and-a-half-minute video shows the screen in the attic where the Goonies discuss the One-Eyed Willy story.
Don't be disappointed
I am predicting that 21363 The Goonies will be a very popular LEGO set.
The Goonies (1985) project submitted by Vaggelis Ntezes (Delusion Brick) for the If We Could Turn Back Time Challenge outperformed the other finalists by a considerable margin.
21363 The Goonies will be available at LEGO.com from 1st November.
During the first week of November, while stocks last, 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes' Attic will be available as a Gift With Purchase (GWP).

That's not a cleaning rag! Mrs. Walsh has her arm in a sling at the start of the movie (the injury that necessitates hiring Rosalita to help pack up the house).
"This set fills in an important scene that is not included in 21363 The Goonies set"
is that really a pro considering the vast majority of buyers of the big set will be missing out?
I've somehow never seen the movie so I can't judge how important it is, but let's just say I don't like this new practice of leaving apparently essential parts out and selling incomplete sets.

Well, it's something additional. I thought the Death Star promo was far worse because it's literally part of the hangar bay and was marketed as such. If they were to release another Goonies set, no one would say buying the big one is missing out on the additional scene. I just wish they eventually made the promo sets available, even a limited run.
Slight typo - you misspelled "Google" as "Goole". Otherwise very good review, and one to slowly continue the miserable downfall of "GWPs that are necessary to have the full set experience".
What’s Chief Brody doing in this set?

I can confirm this house is definitely not in Goole (Yorkshire), I've visited there many times and although it is a port of sorts it has no connection with The Goonies ;D
Irving's head is the same head as Chief Brody from Jaws.
I still call shenanigans on The Goonies tile not being included in the CAD$380 set, but instead in the free-if-you-buy-it-first-but-not-available-otherwise "gift" set. Boo!
But it is a nifty little set aside from that. A good bonus gwp that is not essential for the main model but certainly adds to it. Except for the, you know, name tile, which to me is pretty essential.

Thanks for explaining that. Yes. I was aware of the scene mentioned but I didn't link that part to the scarf.
It would be so much better if it was a normal retail set. It would make the company much more money than as a limited GWP.
Both torsos originate from Harry Potter figures, HP514 and HP563.

This was no Yorkshire attic.
I really don't like that the printed 'Goonies' tile is only in this GWP, and not also in the main set...

Maybe so that he can say, while referring to the Inferno: "You're gonna need a bigger boat".

Thanks. I have amended the text.

I doubt it. I think the appeal with be fairly limited to the type of fan who wans this set right away.
Besides, TLG is well versed in this situation by now. They know that connected (at least by theme) GWPs move the product.
I am a willing victim. This GWP is cool enough to get me to buy an admittedly expensive set that also has good design, play features, pretty decent minifigs, and relatively fair value.

Yes, Jaws.
$329.99 for LEGO on Day 1. For that you get the set, the attic, the whole damn thing.

With brittle brown, that hits uncomfortably close to home.
