Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 2

Posted by ,

Naturally, this year's LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar started with Harry himself, wearing a cosy festive jumper. It is hard to know how this calendar will be organised, but I hope to see an item relevant to Harry today.

Let's find out...

Harry's jumper did feature an owl and a brick-built owl emerges today. This is a nice idea, but its blocky execution leaves a lot to be desired for me. Although the model is small, I think there was an opportunity for feathered texture, which is completely lacking. Some more exposed studs may have been effective, for instance. I like the beady eyes and the talons though, using clips.

Overall - I suppose this owl has a simplistic charm, but I find it very bland.

Feel like the beak is too close to the eyes, it feels more pigeon than owl

Oh, I got it. This calendar is themed around the Engorgio spell.

"A growing charm that could be used to swell and lengthen items. If used carelessly the spell could cause the target to swell to such a size that it exploded. Usually learned alongside its counter spell - the Shrinking Charm - one could not be safely used without the other to hand. Hermione suspected that Hagrid (with the help of his illegally concealed wand) used the spell to help grow his pumpkins, whilst Fred and George's Ton-Tongue Toffees also carry the charm."

Remember, kids, exploding owls are a bad idea.

By in United States,

It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out what it was supposed to be when I was assembling mine this morning. I kept trying to figure out where in HP there'd been robots...

I thinknone of those newer 1x1 brackets that hamg down could have been used to lower the beak. Now it just looks like a black nose. Or maybe a 1x1 'tooth' element coupd have done it?

So is negaflipper the opposite of dreadflipper?
And what does that mean for the world's safety? Are we nega-doomed or mega doomed?

Before I scrolled down and saw the whole image, I thought it was a robot, too.

Both, somehow.

The first Friends Advent Calendar came out in 2012, and for six years they were largely reviled as being the weakest calendars each year. That changed when they filled them full of actual ornaments in 2018 and 2019. It would have been so easy to turn this year's HPAC into ornaments, which I think would have really boosted opinions on the quality of buildable models.
