Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 17

Posted by ,

We should be due for another brick-built animal today and I wonder whether this item will relate to Luna Lovegood's jumper, just like Harry Potter was followed by an owl on day two.

Let's open the door and see...

It may not match her jumper, but Thestrals are closely associated with Luna Lovegood and this model looks good to me. Its design is very similar to Buckbeak from day eight, featuring exactly the same wings and legs, although the tail and pointed ears are unique. I like the 1x2 grille brick forming the creature's skeletal body, but perhaps the legs could have been thinner.

Overall - While I think the Thestral looks alright, its similarities to Buckbeak are a bit strange.

I'll level with you, I had not considered the possiblity of a penguin-centaur - a pengtaur - until today. Pengryphon? Pengasus.

Looks more like an owl than a penguin.

Peng-wing. The creature Benedict Cumberbatch always talks about.

The following thought just occurred to me - would this series of books have been as popular if he had been called Barry Potter?

I would have to assume yes,

The name of the main character has no impact on the content of the story. And is ultimately inconsequential.

However, it is also the name of the book, so depends on how many people were drawn to the book through the name 'Harry' and would struggle to connect to a 'Barry'

Michael Gerber wrote at least two HP Parodies named 'Barry Trotter'

Barry Trotter makes more sense, since he goes to HOG warts

Yeah not entirely convinced that the notably skeletal thestrals really translate to chunky chibi form

Three. The Shameless Parody, The Unnecessary Sequel, and The Dead Horse. They were eventually collected in an omnibus, Barry Trotter and the, uh, Shameless Parodies.

Do people name their kids Barry in the UK?

They do. One popular Britsh Barry sang in some fantastic disco tunes.

You keep saying these words. I do not think they mean what you think they mean.

Neat, from a child with a cool sweater to a beast that only the dead can see.

Blackbeak?

You silly animal!

By in Hungary,

It's too grey and thick. Maybe cones for the legs and a 1 brick wide head?

By in Netherlands,

At first I thought they did a recolored buckbeak. Not a fan of this attempt to do a thestral

Not the dead, but people who've witnessed death.
