Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 7

Posted by ,

The reception for yesterday's Gonk Droid was quite negative overall, so I hope to find a better droid behind door number seven, similar to the earlier Pit Droid.

Find out what today brings below...

R7-A7 strikes me as a random choice for inclusion, determined purely by this Astromech droid already being in production for 75401 Ahsoka's Jedi Interceptor. That makes sense, but I think the opportunity could have been taken for another droid. After all, merely changing the colours would suffice and there was even a chance to complete R7-D4, whose head appears in 75400 Plo Koon's Jedi Starfighter Microfighter.

Despite the missed opportunity, this is a good figure. R7-A7 accompanies Ahsoka regularly in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the vibrant dark red, white and lime green colours are superb together. However, I wish the back of the cylindrical body was decorated, as it has been on R2-D2 recently.

Overall - R7-A7 looks good, but with so many potential options for new Astromech droids, this seems a bit random.

I wonder if he’s been picked because of how Christmassy his colours are, he’s a bit like droid Santa with the red body and white head

Disney: It's not pretty or interesting, but it will/can be useful 3.5/5p
Friends: 4.5/5p
Minecraft: Oh no 2/5p
Harry Potter: 4/5p
Star Wars: Christmas-like colours, without back printing and accessories. 3.5/5p

Must have had a lot of R7-D4 stock to offload.

Awww, someone knitted a holiday jumper for the li’l robot!

I was thinking this was Obi-Wan’s, which I’m pretty sure got carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey.

As someone who skipped over 75401, I’m very pleased with today’s minifigure. R7’s one of the more unique Astromech Droids color-wise (he does look kind of Christmas-y, come to think of it), so I’m glad to finally have a minifigure of him. He’ll look great next to Ahsoka on my Republic Army display.

I wish he had back printing, but for some reason LEGO continues to refuse to give Astromechs back printing unless their names are R2-D2 or Chopper.

R7 A7 has always been one of my fave "minor" astromechs , I've always loved his color scheme, plus that final season of the Clone Wars he really came in clutch

By in Puerto Rico,

Huh, he looks the part for the season.

So, two thoughts:

1. Like johleth said - guessing the insanely overpriced Ahsoka ship (290 pieces for *$45 USD*) ain’t selling well.

2. Would it have absolutely killed them to throw in one round stud and a minifig Santa hat so we could perch the hat on top of his head? That would have easily taken this from “overflow stock” to “adorable Christmas peak”. Ultimately that feels like the theme of this Advent Calendar so far - missed opportunities that could have been saved by *one* little piece change or addon (like how 3POs chair has a normal 2-stud flat piece instead of a bracket on the back that would have let the Day 1 minifig stand on it like in the film).

I really doubt “overstock” of the figure has anything to do with its inclusion here. The calendar’s contents were probably decided long before sales data on the set of Ahsoka’s fighter was available, and possibly even before it launched.

That is, in general terms, not how anything about Lego's production works at all.

That's what I was thinking.

Besides, regardless of how well the set was selling, they're not going to open up all the sets that have already been produced to pick out one of the figures so as to put it in this calendar. They'll leave the sets intact, and if they really had an overstock that they were trying to get rid of, they'd just put 75401 on sale.

To be fair, it's a droid themed advent calendar. I'm not really sure what else you expect from it.

Day 7:

0 points (+ 17 from yesterday = 17): Dy - Purely utilitarian, not exciting
1 (+ 7 = 8): MC - Too abstract.
2 (+ 16 = 18): Ct - Things get better from here. A very cute dog!
3 (+18 = 21): Fr - Swapped City and friends last minute. This is a good looking and creative setup!
4 (+ 20 = 24): SW - I wanted R7-A7 so dearly that I bought 75401 before the AC were announced X)
5 (+14 = 19): HP - Now that's a great minifig! Draco's sweater might be green, but he doesn't seem to be happy about the displayed motive.

I didn't even realize this was an existing character. I just thought "ah, Christmas astromech."

I don't look at the box graphics when I receive it every year as a present so I have no idea what lies within the box. I sometimes think that LEGO should keep to an absolute minimum their Advent box art.

AC contents are revealed every year at NYTF, which happens in February. Most likely, the designer saw a somewhat Christmasy droid would already be in production, and took advantage of the situation.

Given the robot theme would that be an ottoman for an auto-man?
