Random minifig of the day: drm081

Posted by ,

Today's random minifigure is drm081 Cyber Brain Spider - 6 Legs, Magenta Appendages, a DREAMZzz figure that came in one set, 71491 Mateo and the Z-Blob Action Race Car, released during 2025.

Our members collectively own a total of 566 of them. If you'd like to buy one you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $7.90.

Minifig, really? You're sure?

I was thinking it looked more like an Eldritch horror, myself.

It’s not a minifig but these are really cool. I have 10 of them scattered around my city.

I love the spider brains so much. It's a shame we'll never get the element in other color combinations like Tran-Green + Black!

I haven't watched the Dreamzzz show (although I've thought about checking it out), but I have the feeling that this thing gets as much characterization as a droideka. I'm fine with expanding the definition of "minifig" beyond Lego's official definition (especially since I don't have to protect a patent), but minifigs should only be constructions that represent individual, specific characters. I'm more willing to accept https://brickset.com/minifigs/crs065/lightning-mcqueen-rust-eze-hood-red-and-white-sides-light-bluish-gray-1-x-4-plates as a minifig than I am this thing, unless I've made unwarranted assumptions about it.

So, I’m guessing Aragog is eligible?

Brickset actually also counts Dwarf Spider Droids as minifigures, which is ridiculous especially with the newest variant being around 120+ pieces

Which one is 120 pieces?!

Just imagine in 10 years time when 71049-0 appears as a minifig...

It’ll never happen:

1. That is a set, and it’s composed of other sets.
2. The individual sets aren’t recognized as Minifigs by BL.
3. RMotD doesn’t have a 10yr waiting period. A minifig is eligible to be listed the day it releases.

I can’t not see the ends of its titular magenta appendages as beady little eyes. The left of which is wearing a monocle

My first thought was indeed "this is pushing the definition of minifigure."

I do like the brain piece tho, and it was a slightly different mini-spider build, so it wasn't too bad.

Just make sure that nothing breaks. Since you renamed "Vintage Set of the Week" to "Vintage set," neither tag is bringing up anything. What's weird is that the "Vintage Set" articles still have a sidebar, so some part of Huwbot knows about those articles, just not the part that parses tags. I guess his right serve doesn't know what his left servo's doing.

Thanks. I hadn't realised that. Now sorted.

Sucking out the brain of a minifig apparently makes you eligible.

Whoops minor exaggeration. The newest one only has 55 pieces lol but that’s still a lot for a “minifigure”

Don't you dare. It's not a RMotD without half the commenters flying into a frothy rage over the other half. There is great comfort in so many people being but confidently but harmlessly wrong - and Huw, this broken world needs healing.

Them we can debate whether "generic" minifigs are characters!

So, just to stoke the discussion, which "Minifigure" has the highest piece count?

Possibly https://brickset.com/minifigs/crs080s with his 125 pieces, would be my guess...?

@Huw said:

Just idly wondering, but would there be any possibility of Brickset developing its own minifigure catalogue to fit a stricter definition than Bricklink's does? I understand that it would be a lot of work to implement (although I'm sure I'm not the only member who'd be willing to help out if needed!), but Bricklink's approach has so many weird inconsistencies that I can't help but feel a self-contained Brickset minifigure catalogue would have a certain set of advantages.

Not necessarily saying it should be done, just wondering if it had ever been considered, is all ^^

That was a lot easier when heads had hollow studs.
