BDP10: Rolling Dough Pizza Co.

Posted by ,

BrickLink Designer Program series 10 voting has begun, so this week we are publishing articles written by project designers.

In this one, Lucas Michlik (BrickAndMortar) describes Rolling Dough Pizza Co.

Pizza is one of my absolute favourite foods. There's just something perfect about it. And when I was thinking about what my LEGO city was missing, it hit me: a proper neighbourhood pizza spot. Not some generic chain, but the kind of place with character, where locals actually hang out. That's how Rolling Dough Pizza Co. came to life.

This build is actually a continuation of my shipping container series. I started with Tortilla Sunrise Tacos, and now I'm expanding that street food vibe with Rolling Dough. The concept started simple enough: build a pizza shop. But then I started thinking about that typical NYC vibe, those street corners where everything's happening at once. You've got skaters posted up outside pizza joints, delis, bodegas, anywhere with good food and space to hang. That energy, that mix of food and street culture, just felt right for this build.

Rolling Dough Pizza Co. is where Pizza That Moves You is more than just a slogan. This lively neighbourhood pizza spot is always buzzing, serving up fresh slices and good vibes from a compact, character-filled build that feels right at home on a busy street corner.

Out front, bold colours and playful details make the eatery impossible to miss. There's an oversized pizza slice on the roof (because why not?), and an inviting service window below where you can practically smell the pepperoni. But the real action happens on the sidewalk, where a mini skate park brings the whole scene to life.

With smooth ramps, colourful rails, and just enough space to pull off a few tricks, it's the perfect hangout for local skaters grabbing a slice between sessions. Watch as boards roll past the eatery, tricks are landed (or totally wiped out), and friends cheer each other on from the kerb. The skate area adds movement, energy, and that strong sense of community you get in neighbourhoods where everyone knows each other.

That NYC street corner feel was really important to me. Those spaces have always been the most interesting: not fancy, just real. Places where people from all walks of life cross paths, where a skater kid and a taxi driver might be waiting for the same slice. That's what I wanted to capture: that authentic city energy where everything collides in the best way possible.

Look closer and you'll find even more fun details I snuck in. There are pizza boxes and kitchen touches inside, street elements like a fire hydrant and curb ramps (accessibility matters, even in LEGO cities), and a towering tree that adds some vertical flair to the build. Little surprises are tucked around the base to bring the whole scene together.

Rolling Dough Pizza Co. captures the vibe of a city block where food, skating, and community collide. It's a playful, story-rich build that's perfect for display or imaginative play. Proof that great pizza really does move you.

I'm submitting this because I really believe in what this build represents. It's not just about pizza or skating. It's about those neighbourhood spots that become gathering places, where the city feels alive and connected. And it's another piece of that street food world I'm building, one container at a time.

There are some really lovely touches in this. And congratulations for putting in an entry, more than most of us have done.

Personally I think this set would benefit from more space at the front, and maybe the skate ramp turned 90° and put to one side. It looks a bit crowded and difficult for anyone to get into the pizza place currently. Maybe a table or 2 outside the door.

But nice job and good luck!

So there are 599 submissions, since the voting opened you made 7 articles about Series 10 and 3 of them are from the same designer.

That’s because @huw has mentioned they will publish articles if the fan designers send them the write-up. So this designer has done that for all 3. I’ve been meaning to send @huw an update for my Wizard’s Tower…just haven’t had the time.

“You gotta roll with it…”

I see what you’re doing here with these food shops. They all lead back to Madchester!

I was just thinking that this reminded me of the ice cream parlor…some nice touches but way too busy for me. Good luck with one of them!

Looks cool, but I have a feeling it's pretty hard to order a pizza while doing tricks on your skateboard....

Exactly this. We have had quite a few submissions but will only publish one a day, and of course only while voting is open.

Hopefully Bricklink will add some enhancements to the filter as it’s very difficult to remember your own votes for 599 sets. I don’t remember a favorite but I didn’t either for series 8 and those finalists are very intriguing.
