Double LEGO Insiders points on Eevee and Pikachu

Posted by ,

LEGO Pokémon was introduced in February and the sets have evidently proven very popular, as expected, given the lack of discounts or offers available since.

However, you will now receive double Insiders points when purchasing 72151 Eevee or 72152 Pikachu and Poké Ball on LEGO.com, from today until April 30th.

Does this not seem a little strange considering they have only been available for a few weeks?

These sets are going on general release later this week to shops that have not been allowed to stock them yet (yes including mine), so cynical me says that is why

It's a thin line between cynicism and strategy, but I think both can be applied here.

Well, double points would have been enough for me (for Eevee) until I learned that other stores will now have this set on stock - i.e. we should be able to get 20% off or more reasonably soon. There are also several more Pokemon sets coming up soon; so, I'll wait and see because it is absolutely clear that I won't complete the whole collection.

Apparently they were a flop... Here in Portugal, lego shops have those with 20% off...

Maybe not a flop but a bit too much disconnected from reality (especially considering all the geopolitical uncertainties of late). In Canada, Eevee is $85; at $60-$65 it's ok. The big flagship set is $900, at $650-$700 I might consider it. Anything below that, I would consider it a deal. I like Pokemon but I'm not a big fan. There are tons of other Lego sets that I want - sooner or later you have to make a choice and, TO ME, Pokemon does not have the priority (you cannot do much with them aside from putting them on a tablet). For me, Pokemon is best suited as a video game. Since I try to buy Lego representation of most video games, I want a small Pokemon set to go along all my other video game related Lego sets.

You mean local Lego stores? That's interesting.

Well with wide release to shopping resellers they might be 30% off soon if not selling crazy

Wonder how much they'll have to discount the smart slop sets to get them to sell lol

I’ve just looked at the ownership figures for Brickset users and it’s quite surprising.
Venasaur, Charizard & Blastoise, Owned 810, Wanted 785
Pikachu, Owned 339, Wanted 648
Eevee, Owned 641, Wanted 927

A lot more people have the big one compared to the others.
I am one of those and I have to admit, I was interested in getting Pikachu but as soon as a realised it wasn’t to the same scale I switched off.
No idea if I’m alone with that sentiment.
But clearly the 2 on offer have not done well from launch

That would suggest they're just expensive enough to price out the more casual fan, but not expensive enough to flaunt as an indicator of wealth

Not surprised, the MEGA sets were vastly superior and LEGO overpriced these sets to squeeze fans.

The clearest picture of flopping was that a POKEMON set wasn't limited to just 1 per person, and it was never on backorder. Pricing was atrocious and this showed it. Only the Trio was ever sold out because of the GWP, others had absolutely no incentive.

I doubt it shows anything. Pokemon fans are unlikely to have Brickset accounts and so won't be recording their purchases here. I imagine most LEGO fans (who may possibly have a brickset account, but it is still unlikely) interested in buying the cheaper sets know they will be on offer at some point and will wait for it, whereas the big set had the FOMO GWP.

Looks like they are not selling well. No worries, the next overpriced flop is already in the works. ;)

I imagine it was planned before they were released. As paulrothwell noted already, they are going on general release at other stores and so LEGO wants to tempt some more sales this week before that happens. Double points is 10% of the RRP to be spent on a future order so costs LEGO nothing or something towards an Insiders gift, again with another future order.
