Review: 40358 Bean There, Donut That

When 40358 Bean There, Donut That was first revealed a few days ago here on Brickset and elsewhere, I made it a mission to find one. I've not known LEGO to use a pun in a set description, so that alone made it a must have for me. I was successful in locating a copy this weekend. Let's take a look and see if this little set makes it through the filter or should be hole-ly missed….

The front of the box shows a very active scene of a coffee/donut stand that includes four minifigs and a dog. The back of box is reminiscent of seasonal vignettes of recent years in that it recounts a little story. It appears the barista running the coffee stand is taking a well deserved break - and a nap - leaving the dalmatian unattended. Trouble is brewing! Eventually, the barista wakes up, and to her dismay, finds quite a mess, and likely a few less donuts!

Inside the box there are three unnumbered bags and an instruction booklet.

Minifigs

There are four minifigs in this little set. The first two are the barista running the shop and one of the customers. The barista is wearing a smock that we've seen on a few minifigs before and has a coffee cup logo on the front . She is the only minifig in the set that has a double sided head; she has a very caffeinated smile on one side, and a peaceful sleeping expression on the other, as demonstrated in the panels on the back side of the box. I'm not entirely sure how the barista was able to sleep after drinking coffee - maybe it was decaf? The other female minifig is a medical professional. She has a phone as an accessory (not pictured). She is wearing white scrubs and has a medical logo on her shirt as well as an ID badge.

Both minifigs have relatively uncommon and pretty hair pieces - I particularly like the barista's braided hairstyle, though considering the set it may have been better being put in a bun? The medical professional has her hair drawn up into a long ponytail. Both minifigs have printing on the back, though the medical professional's hair obscures the medical logo.

The other two minifigs are another two customers of the coffee stand. Perhaps one of them is named Joe? The first is a businessman. He's wearing a conservative grey suit with red tie and has a briefcase accessory. Taking a closer look, he may be a reporter as it appears there's a small microphone clipped to his lapel. The other male minifig I originally thought was a construction worker, however with the appearance of a trash can in the set it may be that he's a sanitation worker? He's dressed for safety in either case with high visibility pants and vest, with a blue shirt and a red hard hart. He has what appears to be a whistle hanging from his neck and also wears an ID badge.

View image at flickr

These minifigs also have back printing on them, though their hair isn't quite as interesting as the female minifigs.

View image at flickr

We can't forget the dog! The Dalmatian hasn't appeared many times before, and I really like the detailed printing. I'll stop of short of calling him a Berliner, but he does look like he has an affinity for a cookie or two.

Completed model

There's a few ancillary pieces to this set. There's a bicycle in bright blue that includes a bag as well as a safety helmet. It's not clear who the owner of the bike is. There's also a banana included with this set - I'm not sure where it's supposed to be, considering the coffee stand isn't selling fruit, so I'm including it here. The trash can could be something for the sanitation worker, or more likely just a necessity considering the donut and coffee stand nearby.

View image at flickr

There's also a sign showing that there are donuts available, plus a table with some cash, a cuppa and a cruller.

View image at flickr

The main build is the coffee and donut stand, and is quite detailed. There's a sign on top of the awning indicating what wares are for sale and a small sign off to the side. There's a coffee machine with a couple mugs - the coffee machine build we've seen before, particularly in some Friends sets. There's also a turntable with the assorted pastries for sale with some nice printed pieces.

View image at flickr

The turntable is supplied with an impressive layout of pastries, including some under glass. If you're looking for printed donut pieces, this is the set for you - it rises to the occasion with seven of them, with one extra.

The stand is not unattractive from the back, where a cash register can be found.

Overall thoughts

View image at flickr

As the packaging clearly shows, this set is exclusive to Target stores in the US at this time, and retails for $19.99. It feels very much like a seasonal vignette set, especially with the little story told in panels on the back of the box. Looking at it through that lens, then the pricing is a little high. However, unlike many seasonal sets, there are four minifigs, and several of them are relatively uncommon. There are also several printed pieces, especially if you're a fan of the printed pastry/cookie pieces.

Overall, I think this is a delightful little set. For me it was worth picking up for the pun alone. It's a nice little build, and I enjoy that there are many printed pieces that are not common. I think this would make a nice addition any city layout.

By in United States,

The businessman's suit reminds me a lot of president business's. Of course, without the microphone.

By in United States,

I dont think the price is too bad, and I fully intend on picking one up as soon as its in stock at a local store. Thanks for the review!

By in United Kingdom,

Dalmatians have soft, floppy ears - you can't just paint a Doberman black and white and call it a Dalmatian!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does anyone know where in the store this is plano'd/stocked? In line with the legos or in a seasonal or special merchandise display?

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Will it eventually be available on lego.com?

By in United States,

Thanks for the review Megan! I bought and built this little gem Saturday night, and kinda love it. In total mine had 3 pie pieces as well as the 8 donut pieces, and several (forgot how many) of the cookies. I really like the aqua? color coffee maker, and super happy to finally have a Dalmation (who now occupies Ghostbusters Headquarters - as it used to be a Fire Station). Is it worth 20.00?... probably not, it really shouldn't be more than 15.00. But should the price stop you from buying it?... well it didn't stop me (although my wife did complain that it seemed rather small for a twenty). Had it been vintage Fiestaware she would've seen the appeal :)

^ In regards to how to buy: I called my local Target and gave the girl the DCPI (posted in orig. article) and she said they were still in the back and hadn't been put on shelves yet. But she said they didn't have a release date so put one aside for me, which I picked up from Client Services. Hope that helps!

By in United States,

Normally, I hate puns, but I grudgingly admit they are appropriate in this review.

Looks like an interesting set.

perhaps...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This set make a good addition to the other street vendors that can be added to all the modular sets.

Hope it becomes available elsewhere

Gravatar
By in Germany,

ID badge? That looks more like a pocket with a pen sticking out to me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What a lovely little set! I hope it becomes available on Shop @ Home. I wish it was a bit cheaper, but it's still really charming.

Gravatar
By in United States,

For those looking for it in Target, the DPCI is 204-00-0606.

Happy hunting!

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

If this is available from Shop at Home then I may get it as I need more medics in my City.

Gravatar
By in France,

I agree with SirZed in that it looks like the medic has a pen in her vest pocket and not an ID badge - for the little detail. Nice little set. Good complement to put in a busy Lego City corner. I wonder how they could translate the name to keep the pun in French. But it seems like they won't have to, as exclusive to Target (I "hate" more and more exclusive...)
Good review as usual thank you.

By in Panama,

@ewokswithbricks - thank you :-)

@SirZed, Brick’t - you may have a point!

@thoughtsonblocks, others - I obtained my copy by looking up the DPCI code online and then going to a store that indicated they had it in stock. It wasn’t on the shelves, so I asked one of the Target associates (very nicely) if they had it, and he went to the back to get it for me. I have heard that some stores won’t sell it until later this month, and yet others have it stocked in the regular LEGO area.

By in United States,

I like how the barista now has a gender-neutral coffee apron. They updated the printing on that recently, so if you have 40262 Christmas Train Ride, you can swap out the torsos so the male barista in that set doesn't have the female contouring.

This is a fantastic little set and I'm looking forward to adding it to Brickadelphia. We do plenty of shopping at Target so I asked my wife to keep an eye out for it. Also, aren't those pink donuts formerly exclusive to the Simpsons range? Nice to see them becoming more widely available.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The red thing around the sanitation guy's neck looks like a pen to me, but maybe it's a dog whistle.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

But not even on eBay.co.uk !

MeganL, excellent review as always. Your review has made me decide that I want to buy this. I do like the pieces, and to have some uncommon parts would be great.

By in United Kingdom,

You’d think the heads on the ladies would be the other way around, make the customer be the sleepy one until she gets her coffee and perks up

Gravatar
By in United States,

My brother found this at our local Target by giving an employee the DPCI code. It's great little set with some very nice pieces. It just seems to be priced a few dollars more than it should be.
Normally, when I feel like a set is a little over-priced, I'll wait and get it at 20% off, but that isn't going to happen with this set.

Make a dunkin donuts lego it would look amazing or an ikea.. Id buy it just for the Swedish meatballs snd hotdogs:

"The first is a businessman. ... Taking a closer look, he may be a reporter as it appears there's a small microphone clipped to his lapel."

I think he is a businessman afterall and the microphone is a handsfree device for his mobile phone.

By in Portugal,

A nice little set with some flaws. I think LEGO should do much better and should always pay attention to details. The businessman's torso is from set 70632 https://brickset.com/minifigs/njo421/fred-finley- (70632). As previously said, the barista's torso should be swapped with this one https://brickset.com/minifigs/hol098/christmas-train-ride-barista-(40262). The barista should have these legs https://brickset.com/minifigs/twn270/barista-(10255). A good selection of parts, though.

By in United Kingdom,

This SO needs to be released in the UK...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Thanks ^ RJARR. Was wondering where i'd seen that suit before.

Nice little set. Wouldn't buy it, but i like it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a cute little set! The businessman's torso has only ever come in one other set, so it's nice to get it here. The coffee stand looks unique and would fit well into my city street. My only qualm with this set is that it doesn't come with any of the plain white coffee cups, like the one that came with Larry the Barista back in 2014. I also wish the price was like $5 cheaper.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A nice little set. I'll probably buy it if I'm able to find it though $20 seems a bit steep for this.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'm almost certain this won't be released in Australia, but I do hope it is, because it's such cute, charming little set.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

If I could get one in Australia I would so do it, it looks neat.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Picked mine up over the weekend. Love it!

I checked Brickseek on Friday, and no stores had it. I checked again on Saturday and all the stores showed inventory.

I went to a nearby store on Sunday and asked a Target team member about the set, and he had to get it from the stockroom. He said they're not scheduled to be put out until later this month.

He did ask where I got the info (DCPI and photo) from. I said from a LEGO website.... I kept Brickseek out of the conversation.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was dismissed after being told it was Street Dated Sept 30.
Oh, the humanity!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I bought 2 and I revamped the second one to fit in with the Winter Village Firehouse! A bit smaller width wise and taller so a minifigure can fit in easily! I also got a sig fig out of the second one...me in a suit and tie! Imagine that!

By in Canada,

@stephengory
That is probably why I cannot find it on target.com. I guess I'll have to wait till October 1st, then order it.

PS - if you live outside of the USA (like myself), you can ship it to reship and they will forward your Target order to anywhere in the world. And because they are based in Oregon, your order is tax free. Here is a link: https://www.reship.com:443//?rf=eb257ec1-8886-4070-986a-be95d023336f

@stephengroy & @ggfile

I would ask again. I went to the nearest one to me when I first saw the set here, had them look up the DCPI. I was told Sept. 24th. Then this morning, I saw a friend hit one yesterday at a different Target. I went to that one, asked to check the code, mentioned about them being in back, and I got one.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love the box art. It looks great and it's good to see a quite a bit of thought has gone into what can be done with this little set.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@ggfile Thank you so much for this link--what a brilliant discovery! There have been so many items I wanted to get but didn't want to sit in a border line up and deal with customs on the way home again. You're my new best friend!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I got this just because, but I keep being tired of having food sets released over and over and over and over and over again. I mean, Assembly Square has a bakery AND a coffee shop, this year's modular is a diner, we have pizza trucks, hot dog stands, delis, and so on...I know I might be making a big deal out of things, but, can we have some other stuff?

Either way, great review!
