Introduced in 2012... funny, I thought this part was slightly more recent than that.

1,236 sets, wow. So versatile, so many possibilities, yet it's only been around for 11 years. Huh.

The "opposite" version, with the bracket part extending down from the plate, has been around since 2002, so I guess this little guy got a running start. Sometimes you can tell it takes the designers a little while to really figure out a part and use it in a lot of sets, but this was just a logical extension of what had come before.

@Rob42:
Yup, the 1x2-1x4 down bracket had been around for years when the down version of this showed up, so all those “this is the right part, but it’s not quite the right shape” moments where this is what they really wanted started paying off. And then a rapid expansion of the bracket family has followed in the years since.

Interestingly enough, I was in the room when the LDraw file for the down version was written. Before I’d even joined my LUG, I went to a few meetings. At one meeting, a member brought a copy of the 1x2-2x2 down bracket to show everyone, and another member who’s very active in the LDraw community made a rare appearance. He saw the new bracket, realized all the dimensions could be cribbed from the 1x2-1x4 version with a few tweaks, and asked if he could borrow the bracket to whip up a file to submit before someone else beat him to it.

Sort of a shame there isn't a SNOT category, just "Plates, Special" (and by extension, Bricks, Special), which includes other elements that don't have SNOT capabilities.

@PurpleDave: Very cool.

That first year, this was only in the one colour. White didn't appear until 2016 and yellow not until 2018! What a varied and interesting history.

While it’s believed we’d like to devolve into cheap humour in all comments sections, it’s really not true. That’s right, it’s a total phallusy

I've been running into this issue a lot -- parts I'd believed were introduced recently actually came out 10+ years ago.

Guess I'm just getting old, or possibly went through a mini-dark ages where I was still involved with the community but wasn't acquiring many new sets or parts. Either way, I've come to absolutely adore this part. Paired with the standard bracket, you can make some incredible, and incredibly sturdy, designs.
