The Big Bang Theory Cuusoo project hits 10k
Posted by Huw,
Another project that Brickset's Cuusoo correspondent GlenBricker has been involved with, based on the TV series 'The Big Bang Theory', hit 10k earlier today.
I have to confess that I know nothing about the series at all other than seeing it mentioned in the Radio Times. However, the set looks pretty uninspiring -- a group of minifigs in a room -- and I suspect to do it justice, it needs as many minifigs as shown which looks to be far more than one could reasonably expect in a set of this size.
There are now five projects which have achieved 10k support since the last deadline passed in January and which will be reviewed in May: Birds, modular Apple store, BTTF train, Doctor Who and now this TBBT one.
Anyway, well done again GlenBricker; maybe you'll be the first to have two projects made into sets...

Another in a long line of examples of people voting for an idea on Cuusoo rather than an actual model or design; I wonder if that's really what LEGO had in mind when they launched Cuusoo ?
love big bang, but this set will not make it i am afraid.
A random but timely coincidence (or not?!) is that in the very latest episode of the show (that aired in North America this past Thursday), there's a scene where Sheldon is in his childhood bedroom building an old LEGO police station (6386).
Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing "The Couch" from the show as a set, but I think they should've skipped the walls and floor and just included the interior bits to minimize the piece count. It looks too big now to ever have a chance at passing review.
There was also an episode that revolved around Sheldon wanting to build the Lego death star. Unfortunately I too don't see this passing review.
Oh dear. CUUSSO submissions that are hitting 10k are getting worse. Minifig heavy sets with very little in the way of bricks should be removed from CUUSSO.
Not gonna pass. Sorry, but LEGO just isn't going to make stuff like this. I supported anyway, because I want the batman trophy and the blue 1x1 round plate with hole. I will admit though that's the coolest living room I've seen, at least in LEGO.
Not going to pass, too adult to go through.
DrDaveWatford: I don't think anyone in this world have any idea what LEGO had in mind when they launched CUUSOO - including the employees. This is another project that had had to be cancelled 15 minutes after its launch. It is just a MOC with some stickers.
I love TBBT though, but this "set" is useless.
We've got super hero sets and star wars sets, but sets featuring minifigs that are fans of super heroes and star wars? Hmmmmmm, as a concept for a set it's struggling for me!
This submission is a parts bin set at best.
Out of the current line-up, I really, REALLY hope the Birds Project gets a pass. Need to see more non-licence get made and that is the submission to do it. I think 31019 Forest Animals is 'testing the water' for that.
Wow, I don't think I could disagree more with some of the comments above. This is the funniest show on television, and this set is the main scene from the show. The amount of detail in there is just staggering, as MOCdoc said, this is the coolest LEGO living room made. Congrats both to Alatariel and GlenBricker for their success!
This is on TV right now - the successful Back to the Future and Ghostbuster sets were on the screen 30 years ago, and I'd bet that the very, very large majority of children in TLG's usual target markets have never seen, or even heard of, those movies (I have three kids ages 9 - 21). True that the subject matter of TBBT may be a bit grown up at times, but I don't think its really out of line with BTTF, Ghostbusters, Simpsons, POTC, even Star Wars, etc.
I bought the BTTF Cuusoo set and will buy the Ghostbusters one as well, but to be honest I haven't seen either one of those movies in at least a decade, while TBBT is on every week (and seemingly on every night on cable), so I think there is definitely a market for this set from the fanbase, plus others would be interested for the great parts included.
I don't think that the non-licensed and the licensed projects are in competition with each other - if some of each get to 10K, I don't think one crowds out the other, and I'd be glad to see many projects pass the review each year.
With that said, I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!
A little of topic, but can more than one project pass in a review period? Or can there only be one per review?
^ Yes, more than one can pass.
"This is the worst show on television"
Fixed.
tbbt tv show just got renewed for 3 more years. it is the funniest thing on tv! being a lego fan and a tbbt fan, i would love to have this set. even my daughter - in-law who has a great fear of stepping on legos in the dark, said she would buy this set. dont hate the geeks. =) like the simpson set, everything on the shelfs and in the room has had importance some time or often on the show. these are the main people on the show and are on every week.
If this goes through, I will throw a hissy fit of epic proportions.
This show is the equivalent of blackface for nerds.
Poor LEGO birds. Talk about a David vs. Goliath scenario. They're up against a murderer's row of juggernaut IPs: Big Bang Theory, BTTF, Dr. Who and Apple.
All the more reason I'm pulling for the birds.
The Big Bang Theory is the Number One comedy in the United States. It is hilarious and I really like the set. Hope something will come of the set (maybe a micro set with some of the main characters). I don't see this having global appeal however.
Great show, uninspiring set. PLEASE Lego, see sense and pass the birds!
I don't get why everyone is complaining. They did this with the Simpsons and guess what, it turned out to be a nice set. It would win out of all the reviewed projects in terms of appeal of the US audience , as it is one of, if not, the most watched comedies on television.
@DarthWalle, there's a very easy reason why this project has no chance compared to the themes you mentioned.
Ghostbusters, BTTF, POTC, Star Wars etc all have vehicles, buildings and other things you can build out of significant numbers of bricks. Even the Simpsons has an entire house.
How much more could be done around the Big Bang Theory beyond this living room filled with characters?
It's a nice project, and a nice little vignette, but I can't believe it'll be a good Lego set.
I don't think you could put TBBT in the same league as The Simpsons
Eastenders and Strictly Come Dancing are two of the most viewed shows in the UK and are broadcast by the BBC (the home of Dr Who) but why on earth would I want to see LEGO sets depicting the shows?! Just because a show is viewed by lots of people doesn't make it a good concept for a LEGO set.
CUUSSO is getting bloated with IP-based ideas whilst genuine creative designs are getting thin on the ground. I hope 'Birds' wins.
While I resent the show and never found it funny, I think Alatariel did an excellent job building this model. If this does pass and the final release has a build like this, I'll be picking it up!
Don't get me wrong, it looks great as an MOC... but as a set, there really isn't anything to do with it. :/ Sure, I guess there is displayability, but really, what can you do besides move around the minifigs? Besides, I'm pretty tired of intellectual properties clogging up Cuusoo while projects like, for example, Blue Vengeance stagnate. BV looks great, swooshable, playable, but because it isn't from a popular IP, it just has trouble getting traction. Even Peter Reid's amazing "Exo-Suit," which I believe is the first non-IP Cuusoo project to get approved, only reached that after a long, hard battle and lots of promotion here on Brickset.
Don't get me wrong, I bear no ill-will against the creators of these IP-based projects, but it does seem unfair for stellar, original LEGO designs to play second fiddle to projects with built-in support. Just my two cents, though.
I have my own opinions as to what will pass and what won't; but I think we can all agree that LEGO tries to cater to everyone. Not every set in LEGO's catalog appeals to me, but they appeal to somebody. The fact is that this set received 10K votes. This is a lofty goal and shows that there is interest in it. I would be upset if Cuusoo just dismissed ideas without even looking into it. Hopefully this set will get serious consideration and I have alot of respect for Glenbricker.
Has everyone forgot? LEGO made LEGO Cuusoo so that the PEOPLE could decide and vote on projects THEY like! Just because you find it uninteresting, just because YOU find it no appealing to yourself and just because YOU don't agree doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the website. Gosh you people are unbelievable. Aren't you suppose to be adults? If it reaches 10,000 it has captured what those PEOPLE love, it didn't reach 10,000 for no reason. You have to accept that not everything YOU like will be made in Cuusoo, it's about the peoples choices and MANY of these sets are what the younger generation LOVE!
I am a fan of the show and I would buy this, but can't see Lego taking this one seriously. There's just zero playability with this set and limited appeal to kids. I can't imagine Lego making something aimed at such a small market (AFOL who are fans of BBT). But I've been wrong before.
^^ Normally I'd agree that these people are unbelievable :P, but we're just saying that it's not a good fit for LEGO, and we highly doubt it's going to pass.
As of yet I will simply say I'm rooting for Doctor Who.
but to counter that these aren't projects Lego wants, original products like Creator Squirrel or the songbirds didn't really get the kind of love Lego wanted. It's good to see the Exoskeleton project got through, but Creator Squirrel should have been put through just on principal alone. That was real art with Lego bricks.
My wife and I are massive fans of The Big Bang. We really hope this set gets made, but it mostly is a display set. I much prefer this idea to the Dr Who one.
have you ever thought that sets like this may get new people to become interested in lego???? i'm sure people that are not into lego have bought the simpsons house. not to mention the ghost busters car will be bought because of fan base. lego arn't just for kids anymore.
@LegoAdventures, you have said it best.
Also, by the same logic of "just a Minifigure set", couldn't we technically just classify the Dr. Who project in the same boat, considering there isn't much to be made with the exception of the Tardis.
is it just me or is the guy in the flash shirt (shelden I think) his legs relly out of proportion?
shelden is much taller than the others in real life
Apparently TBBT is still popular in USA, but not so in Australia. The 9 Network, across its 3 channels, shows as many as 4 episodes a night, pretty much every day of the week, meaning it's almost exclusively repeats and nobody can keep track of when the new episodes are on. Even when they are, it's long after they've already appeared in USA.
I don't think TBBT is appropriate for LEGO, since one of the main recurring themes of the show is casual sex. Neither BTTF, Ghostbusters nor The Simpsons have such an adult theme as their cornerstone. The show is rated for people 15 or older; that rules out almost all LEGO fans.
Furthermore, this set is overcrowded with minifigures. Amy and Bernadette are only secondary characters and could easily be excluded. The librarian from the collectible minifigure series could stand in for Amy.
I suspect that this project was supported by masses of people who don't actually collect LEGO and probably won't buy this set even if it does become available.
@Huey1: Which is why you should give up on Australian FTA TV. They take anything that was good and destroy it. Top Gear, great until it went to commercial, now I no longer watch it; The Simpsons, one night a week was fine, 5 times a week I stopped watching it, 4 times a night and I started to loath it; TBBT is now in the same boat, screens well once, so more must be better, I don't recall when I last watched an episode on TV (But I am still fully up to date).
As to the topic: the set is a great example of what can be done. It is recognizable. The detail amazing, but more something to see at a Lego exhibit rather then as a set. If it was made, sure I'd probably get it unless it was over priced here (like the Simpsons' house).
I also like this show, and compared with previous TV show projects like DW and Shelock, this project does provide a complete vision of a possible set, which can help the Cuusoo team valuate this project no matter if it would pass or not.
"blackface for nerds." Nicely put. It's why this show makes my stomach unsettle and is not even the slightest bit funny to me. That said, I don't care whether Lego makes this set or not. As long as SW UCS, Modulars, Technics, and trains continue to get new releases I'm happy.
As for it being a "display set" you could say the same thing for UCS Yoda, Darth Maul, Star destroyer, and Death Star 2. As for being minifigure heavy look at the Death Star and Ewok Village. The only thing i can see stopping it from being made is the license and if Lego thinks it will sell.
"Minifig heavy" isn't the number of minifigs in a set, it's the proportion of minifigs to building bricks. The Death Star has over 3000 bricks.... I don't think this set would.
I do enjoy this show but I really don't believe it is a suitable match for LEGO. I still think the Dr Who theme would be good, someone said it's a b rate tv show? I don't think they've watched much Dr Who or see how many conventions the show has, its just as big as Star Trek.
Anyways, the Big Bang Theory set does look nice, but I don't expect it as a set, doesn't align with the things LEGO is looking for.
@huey1: And everything that you mentioned is child-appropriate?
I like the show. I was rooting for Dr. Who but will have to switch loyalties. Also, I am not totally sure that this will be an interesting set if it comes out, but it's pretty detailed and I like the minifigures.
LegoHound33, the main reason I suspect this and other projects are supported by non-LEGO fans is they keep getting huge surges of support after being mentioned on blogs and fan-sites that have no connection to LEGO. The incredibly lame model of the ATLAS particle detector is the most obvious example; no true LEGO fan would support such a bland and boring idea for a LEGO set. Despite this, it reached the 10k quota in the space of just 19 days in the middle of 2013.
Can someone delete all the chaff 'supposedly' commented by zhuang71... Looks more like a spam attack!
Done. Luckily we don't get that occurring very often.
Lol thx for deleting that bur as of this set it looks ok I would rather have the dr who one tho
@Huey1 - There's nothing wrong with non-LEGO communities learning about and supporting a Cuusoo project. That's how you grow a business.
Also, the "no true LEGO fan" comment sounds a bit haughty. There are no purity tests for being a LEGO fan, nor is it an exclusive club. We should embrace anything that spreads the word about our hobby and creates new fans, even if it's not something you'd personally buy.
"The funniest show on TV" says nothing about the show actually being funny. It only says that the rest is even worse rubbish. (Full disclosure up front: I have watched the first five and a half seasons of TBBT, every episode of it, twice. The first couple seasons were meh, but then it turned out there was no way to go from there but down.)
Quoting someone smarter than me, “There’s a saying which made its rounds in geekdom recently — 'Real nerds watch Community'. Now I take issue with the idea of 'real nerds' but the sentiment still stands. Whereas The Big Bang Theory sees nerd culture as an object of ridicule, Community celebrates it. Community’s laughing with you whereas Big Bang is giving you a wedgie and laughing at you.”

With that out of the way, if you can get to 10k with a Married With Children project or Roseanne or what have you (or Dr Who, for that matter — another show nobody I know can be forced to watch at gunpoint), more power to you. By all means go ahead and do it. It's not my job to critique projects that reach 10k. That's TLG's job.
Getting to 10k requires mad skillz this way or the other, so kudos to everyone who makes it. Peace out.
This is a quality project and I think people are being too hard on it. Having tried to build my own house and/or dorm room several times out of LEGO, I think people underestimate the amount of bricks that have to go into building a well-furnished area like this. This is definitely way more than just a minifigure pack.
And even as a bit of a nerd myself, I really do like the show. A lot of people think it deals in offensive stereotypes, but personally I don't think it treats nerds/intellectuals any worse than the average primetime sitcom treats "average joes". A number of the jokes are genuinely funny and appeal to my nerdy side with their use of semi-obscure references.
However, this really has no chance of passing review in my opinion. The show is INCREDIBLY risqué and deals with lots of incredibly "adult" situations. It's not subtle about them either. It doesn't push the envelope with the same iconoclastic ferocity as shows like South Park, perhaps, but it's definitely much more raunchy than any previous LEGO licenses (up to and including The Simpsons). Even the title is meant as a bit of a double entendre. Certainly not something that would comply with the LEGO Group's family-friendly values.
Tried watching this, too nerdy and tried too hard to be funny. 100% won't pass
is this the same group that said the friends sets would never sell, and still cant understand why it does? play well
^You do know the Lego Friends theme isn't based on the sitcom, right? ;)
(I joke! I'm sure you do and didn't mean that, but in the context... :P)
@Mumsie45: I'm not overly concerned with its sales potential. I think the concerns about the show's content preclude that. I find it a bit sad how many people are chiming in just to bash the show — it's not to everyone's taste, as with ANY show — but I think many people are correct that it won't fare well in review. Contrast other projects like the old Firefly project that got rejected for far less scandalous content.
Doesn't matter how much detail or work is put in if the concept isn't good. All I see is another lame idea using a TV show that I would not was the effort to turn into Lego. I love the idea of Cuusoo but I really wish the 10K projects would stop using TV shows and movies to get there. Can someone please have some originality? The birds Cuusoo project is something Lego can instantly utilize as it doesn't require speciality parts and is far more original. Personally I'd like a dinosaur creator theme not unlike the idea on Cuusoo awhile back for a T-Rex and Stegosaurus.
Not for kids...
I will vote for a Community CUUSOO project 10,000 times personally.
Would not pass appropriateness review either, though.
Ha ha, epyon396, I totally agree! I absolutely despise this show, but it is, for whatever reason, a massive lowest denominator hit. I'm sure a set would sell a ton.
So we have in review A. A set based on Dr. who, and B. a Hollywood stereotyped interpretation of Dr. who fans. Hmmm? I wonder which way they would go with that? (Here's a hint. Anyone who would buy B will also buy A, not so much the other way.)
This review period will either be Birds or Dr. who seeing production. birds being the better Lego project and one more appealing to the Lego designers. dr Who being the better retail product and more appealing to the marketing types. None of the other three will enter into the equation.
LEGO might end up making all three of the sets.
I just don't see the appeal of this as a set. It's a bunch of custom minifigs sitting around a table.
Some pop-culture things aren't going to translate well to LEGO... a live-action sitcom which is heavily based on people talking to each other in a living room is pretty much one of those things.
I like the detail of the minifigures and the room. Would be interesting if they spun off Sheldon's office, Howard's engineering lab (or JPL's Rover Control Room), Cheesecake Factory, maybe a Professor Proton minifig... :)
If priced right, I would buy. Good luck to the teams!
@Huw: you could have mentioned the name of the designer. Thanks.
Alatariel, this is a big improvement on your feminist propaganda project and the long-forgotten video game project. However, I'm not too keen on this one either.
@Huey1: Luckily I couldn't care less about your opinion;-)
