Win a LEGO House and Creator sets in our Mixels building competition
Posted by Huw,
We don't often hold building competitions here at Brickset but the creative potential of Mixels has inspired me to do so. I've had fun creating alternative 'Max' models (using the three red, yellow and grey sets to make a larger monster) so this competition is to encourage you to do the same.
Before we get on to how to enter, let's take a look at the prizes. There will be four of them: the first prize will be the very hard-to-find and sought after 4000010 LEGO House that we reviewed on Monday. Second to fourth prizes will be 2014 Creator sets including 31025 Mountain Hut. We may add other prizes if there are lots of entries.
To enter, simply build a Mixels monster that meets the criteria below and post your entry to the Brickset competition pool on flickr.
Your monster should either be
- A 'Max' model, built from the three red, the three yellow, or the three grey Mixels.
- A 'Mix' model, built from any two Mixels of any colour.
Your entry must state which sets you've used. Your model should use only the parts in the sets you've chosen and of course you can't just enter one of LEGO's suggestions (but by all means look at them for inspiration).
Entries will be judged on:
- the appearance of the monster -- how cool, scary, weird, whacky, inventive, imaginative it is.
- the number of available parts that have been used (so using more of the available parts is better).
- interesting building techniques and use of parts.
Post your entries, a maximum of two images per model, to the group by 02 April 2014 and we'll announce a winner shortly afterwards.
If you need some inspiration, here are three Max models that I've made:
Cragsters Max: I was happy with the way his head turned out although it is a bit fragile. But, fragility in your entries is okay, as we can't see how fragile it is from pictures, after all!
Infernite Max is certainly a weird looking beast. The face is obviously the most important aspect of the model so it was the first thing I built on all three. I wanted his eyes to be on stalks, the rest fell into place after that. His jaw is hinged and opens.
Electroids Max is a goofy looking character sporting the cool bush hairpiece. I do like the googly eyes...
Now it's your turn. Let's see what you can come up with!
Thanks to the LEGO CEE team for providing the prizes.

darn, now i need to go buy some Mixels :-P
I was originally thinking of buying one mixels from each color, but now since this competition has come up, I'm going to have to buy either two of the same color, or all of the same color. Which tribe should I chose now?
Well, anyway sounds interesting, I can't wait to get some mixels!
Oops! I just took apart all nine Mixels and sorted all the parts with the plan to create an amalgamation of the lot (a Mix-Max-Max if you will).
Guess it's a good thing the booklets all have parts lists.
Is it not allowed to build a Mixelesque character from the parts you have available?
So, this is a re-mix(els) competition? :)
^^ No, to keep it on a level playing field, parts must be from 2 or 3 Mixels sets. If you don't have the sets, take a look at the parts lists at the back of the instructions and gather them from parts in your collection.
^Ok I will be in Africa until the week after the contest ends so no chance to buy them but perhaps I can scrounge up enough parts here to try and get an entry together. I should probably focus on packing/moving though. Maybe if there is a Round 2 when the second wave comes out I can join in the fun!
Is there a limit to the number of entries per person?
EDIT: Read over the rules again, let me rephrase that: may we build more than one entry per person?
Also I presume the parts from the nixels are included/allowed?
^ Sure, enter as many times as you like, and yes Nixels parts can be used if they are in the set you've chosen.
If it were not for my 5 year old, I probably wouldn't have any interest in them. He loves these guys and now I'm getting hooked as well.
Sure glad I picked up a red and yellow one yesterday. This should be fun.
Great idea Huw, and a great prize. This is a contest accessible to all, regardless of collection size! Thanks for running this!
Cool contest idea! :), I won't be able to enter though :(
Too bad the Mixels still aren't available where I'm from :( I would love to enter this contest!
Perfect - I'd already made an Electroids Max and just acquired the Infernites this week.
Well, time to through out the creativity and create a Pokémon.
Can it be an assortment of parts from 2 groups like Infernites and Elecroids, or is it only parts from 2-3 mixels?
Just finished my first Mix, Flain and Zaptor, now working on Zorch and Shuff. My dad just came up with the term MOCxel :P
How many photos per MOC?
already build my infernities max version.i'll post it soon. veeeery nice contest!!!
@Muggle, as the rules state, parts from 3 of the same colour for a 'max' model or parts from any two for a 'mix', so that everyone has a level playing field.
Wait, is there a minimum age to be able to enter?
Brilliant idea, I've already submitted my Infernites Max entry. May create and submit some others when I get the time (before the deadline obviously :-) )
I already have some ideas, now to find time to put them into practice. I hope that this is a sign of more contests to come in future!
How many entries per person? Didn't really see it.
SUPER excited!
when will the time limit be?
Is it ok to put photo with other Lego or not-Lego element/part eg. classic-space minifig as on KwakRabbit?
@ToaTaruho -- no
@CM4Sci -- as many as you like.
@bacem -- midnight GMT 2nd April.
@Helryx08 -- yes if they are made from just two sets.
@SERVATOR -- sure, as long as it's obvious it's not part of the main model.
Might sound like a silly question, but when you announce the winners, are you going to announce them by Flickr username or Brickset username?
(not that it matters too much with me since my Flickr and Brickset usernames are the same), but I'm thinking of those that might have completely different usernames on Flickr than on Brickset)
:-)
wow, that's close. i don't think i'll be able to enter...
Glad to hear we can just use parts used in the set without necessarily buying more than one. I'm guessing that they have to be the same color?
@TheOneVeyronian, it'll have to be the flickr username.
I'm glad to see there have been some great entries already: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2600117 @N21/
I assume we are allowed to use excess parts?
After seeing Huw's creations in the flesh or should I say, plastic :) I placed an order for all 9 Mixels!!! @Huw Lego LEGO.com invoice coming your way :)
:-)
Seems like I'm the only one doing Mixes...
Yay! I just got all nine delivered to my door yesterday! Now to start creating...
Can you submit more than one entry?
^ Yes
Got my 9 today :) but am going to keep them for the kids for Easter. Can't wait to see what they come up with.
I've entered in 5 Mixes already, heh. I love making these!
Are you allowed to use parts from your collection because i only have one mixel, vulk. But i also have a wolf legend beast, which provides much more joints.
After tinkering around with my Cragster Max for a few days I finally got one that made me chuckle. There are so many good entries already though! I don't envy the selection process.
I can't believe how addicted I am to building with these! It's addictive AND healthy unlike most things :-) Competition wise, it's too close to call at the moment, you sure have a job on your hands Huw! ;-)
Just entered one. This stuff is incredibly good fun to build with. If I find the time I'll have a go at another one or two.
Just got several so I can start building.
Last question, can we use the extra parts?
Eeep, I've been building so many that the pieces are cracking!
Just submitted my electroids max, working on my infernites max now so i can start remixing. Hopefully I'll be able to get to the store for the cragsters too. This is going to be a busy couple of weeks!
Finally got mine up: https://www.flickr.com/photos/120989515 @N06/
Right then that's Sunday morning sorted Time to mixel it up
What if you are boring and have no Flickr account? :-)
Man am I glad I don't have to decide a winner out of these...they are all so great and creative!!! Just posted my own entry...first time I have EVER built something without a picture or instructions...what fun!!!!
Huw, PLEASE run this contest again when series 2 and 3 come out! :)
Man, I'm glad I'm not judging this. So many of the entries that people have showed look amazing! I think it will be a very hard decision.
My nine year old made a max model using every single piece from the red sets! He was so excited to have me enter it.
