BrickLink Designer Program Series 5 voting open
Posted by Huw,
While we await the commencement of pre-ordering of the five BrickLink Designer Program Series 2 models, voting for Series 5 is now open.
As always, there are some excellent designs among the 307 submissions, including plenty of medieval models, as might be expected given their enduring popularity.
One that caught my eye is Medieval Construction Site by Arselus, pictured above. Which potential sets received your votes? Let us know in the comments.

I am wanting a dark castle.

Plenty of nice looking castles: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1666/Black-Brick-Knight's-Castle
Cant wait to see all the castle and train sets that get picked.
I don't 'get' the Bricklink Designer Program. So they're not official LEGO sets, but in a way they are, and it's not IDEAS. How and why and how?
Mine: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1593/Wooden-Train
Another nice castle https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1492/Bandit-Lord's-Hideout
I designed an ice cream parlor modular - would appreciate your vote ! Thank you !! :)

307 models to ogle before bed.
I hope I can stay awake....
Galactic city is my pick: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1597/Galactic-City
I also like one of the blimps and one of the trains. But I won't get my hopes up. I pre-ordered the train shed form the last round. I'll see how that goes before I shell out a couple hundred bucks on one of these again.
Many good MOCs, but can't say I see that much originality. And as usual also a few from people with really low standards.....
The only one that really stood out to me and which I would actually want to buy would be https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1573/Alternate-Futures
I will scream about Autumn Train Roundhouse from the mountaintops: We need a actual roundhouse in LEGO for the trains, and this one sadly didn't make it in Round 4 but has come back for Round 5. I hope it makes it this time!
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1754/The-Autumn-Train-Roundhouse
wow... look all those castles...
how original and interesting...
Just check for Brickester(s2,s3), Hanwas(s2,s4), SleeplessNight(s1,s4), NicolasCarlier(s1,s4) and Ilucky(s1,s4). Looking at past selections, it seems you have a better chance with those designers!
Not my thing because I like paper instructions (i.e. no computer needed to build the set) and there is little space related sets in there but there are seriously nice models for those who are into that sort of stuff. I think one of my favourite is the space resting station but there isn't a place to park a spacecraft which kind of defeat the purpose.
Going through it there is so much castle they all look the same
Put a not interested on pretty much all the castles. All start to look the same, and it's not I like could afford most of them should any get made.

Really missed out making it a Black castle for Black Knights, which goes with the original theme, now it's just another grey castle with different flags.
I hope none of the good ideas win because I cannot afford it to keep being like this.
Definitely a few in there I'd really have to think about. Some neat ideas, some very repetitive ideas, a few originals. All likely to be extremely expensive.
Wow thank you so much for featuring my "Medieval Construction Site", Huw!
I had great fun designing, I hope folks like the build.
I have one more MOC in Series 5, the "Medieval High Street": https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1552/Medieval-High-Street
The set is intentionally scaled to fit between the Medieval Town Square and the Medieval Blacksmith, the intent being that you could display all three together (Town Square, Blacksmith and High Street) making one cohesive medieval town.

Definitely one of the best ones! Hope it gets picked!
castles, trains and modular buildings again...
If Ideas is broken, the BDP seems to be already broken beyond repair. I can count the proposed sets that actually come up with an original idea or an idea that is executed very well on two hands maximum. I had to browse through castle after castle, train after train and halfbaked set after halfbaked set. There are no cool mechs, maybe one cool vintage car, hardly anything that seemed interesting enough. I ordered 4 out of 5 of the BDP 1 sets, will order 2 of the BDP 2 sets and 1 of the BDP 3 sets (maybe). BDP 4 was riddled with castles (no need for that owning Castle in the Forest and the Winter Fortress) and BDP 5 seems to go in the same direction. Such a pity, but predictable since Castle sets seem to do really good, since many AFOLs just love castles (and dont seem to understand that most of the LEGO buying public couldnt care less about them).

Wolfpack seems to be a popular subject this time around now that torsos are available, but this one is probably my favorite.
I also loved this Mushroom Village (accompanying the upcoming Mushroom House set) from Jonas Kramm: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1768/Mushroom-Village
And this Portal of Shadows display from Brent Waller has a very unique and interesting layout: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1771/Portal-of-Shadows
Beyond those new projects, I also like some of the returning projects that didn't make the cut last time including the Adobe House (https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1668/Adobe-House) and Radio Station - Brick FM (https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1632/Radio-Station---Brick-FM).

I'm kind of over the castles too, but BLDP is not for the general buying public. It's a limited production run of things that really involved people want. Literally for the AFOLs and that's it.
I'm a Castle fan, and I'd like to see a Castle set get through, but even I don't want it to occupy all the slots.
Floored by the number of Wolfpack builds, of wildly varying quality and originality.
The Kraken Attack is a really fun tableau: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1528/Kraken-Attack
Here's mine! It's a working modular canal lock. Inspired by the wonderful canals of Britain and the architecture of cites in England and the Hanseatic cities.
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1613/Canal-Lock
This is my 13th modular and wanted to come up with something that Lego would never. Also, worked hard to get it to 2.5k parts. For a modular, something you rarely see these days. A few great entries all around :) The Bookshop and the Mushroom Village sequel are my favourites.
I made these Eldritch Castle and the playground submissions! Very different MOCs thematically, lol, but they were really fun to build!
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1829/Eldritch-Castle and https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1828/Playground )
In terms of original ideas I like the sunken wreck.
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1484/Deep-Sea-Discovery
The castle in the lava looks nice and is at least partly original in its setting (https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1492/Bandit-Lord's-Hideout).
@Huw it seems that links containing an apostrophe are broken.
The return of the Black Tower
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1606/Black-Tower
A collaboration between I and a friend from my Rlug
I'm a big fan of all things spooky/Halloween-themed and these two are my favorite entries:
Adventure in Transylvania by SleeplessNight:
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1821/Adventure-in-Transylvania
Eldritch Castle by PloopisMocs:
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1829/Eldritch-Castle
I really hope at least one of them makes it through! (my wallet doesn't, though)
I don't want a damn castle, I want a modular

Thank you for the shoutout! I actually resubmitted this design from Series 4 but I added a stand which was suggested by some in the comments
I also have 5 other entries for Series 5
Brick Dog Stand - https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1540/Brick-Dog-Stand
Chevron Knight's Stronghold - https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1583/Chevron-Knight's-Stronghold
Frontier Fort - https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1591/Frontier-Fort
Technic Castle - https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1731/Technic-Castle
Outta this World Treehouse - https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1549/Outta-This-World-Treehouse
Of the 307 submissions the majority were 'not for me's, especially the castles and medieval anythings, which I'm starting to find a bit tedious now.
My 'Love It!'s which I'd probably buy if they're produced:-
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1688/Antique-Shop
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1483/Countryside-Mill-&-Bakery

https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1619/Clown-carousel-(ready-for-motorization)
Especially the 1st two.
I voted. The MOC's they create are just so amazing.
The Rock Raiders tribute is cute and looks like it'd actually be on the cheaper side since it's small and to the point, which is a plus. The minifigs feel kinda random and not-Rock-Raiders-like, but you can only do so much with currently-running prints and parts.
The School and the Inverted Corners are fairly original modulars, from what I could gather. The Theater as well. Could be nice if one of them makes it through this wave of Wolfpack Castles...
It's funny, I really bit into the modern castles with the new official set. Then the Mountain Fortress was like a fitting Falcon castle, different enough but similar enough as well. But since then, the whole castle wave has left me hoping for more. Maybe the fans are over doing it a bit?
I've got to have the "Mushroom Village" to add to the "Mushroom House" and develop a Mushroom Metropolis!
Biplane
Dumb question?
Lego will allow black site helicopter?
@Milocubed said:

And your problem is? Maybe if Lego actually released more sets like this (you know, as fans very clearly want) we'd see more 'original' ideas?

Can’t wait to browse. As I’ve said before, I love that LEGO has this avenue available to us for less curated, less mass marketed fan designs and I hope it continues for years to come. For those of you complaining about the current batches of submissions, I would recommend taking your own normal guidance and just don’t buy them…or submit your own designs for whatever novelty you feel is lacking.
I think these are all well spaced out and at worst a fun opportunity to showcase and/or peruse. My interests the last couple rounds have been lesser but I am excited for a few already pre-ordered as well as at least one or two still coming up.
Thank you, LEGO.

Unlike IDEAS, the BDP sets are unmodified from the original submission (apart from some very minor stuff if needed, like structural issues). It means that you buy what are essentially MoC sets that aren't required to follow the Lego building codes. (ie, not required to use bright pieces in castle walls to break up the mental load on the builder). They also tend to not have the 'Lego playset look' to them.
Fishing Boat is probably my favorite in this round. I definitely weigh my voting heavily in the "I'd actually consider getting it knowing how the pricing will be" way. All these 2000+ sets that just build everything out of tiny bricks, no thanks. I'd rather a sensibly-sized set that does a lot with fewer pieces.
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1513/Fishing-Boat
Can please someone create something original? Please something that you can motorize or has some Technic on it to be more dynamic, and a crank that can add some movement?
Vinyl is mine; it's a record store and recording studio, half modular size (32x16).

Lol, and then decapitation?
I sorted by size and prioritized looking at the first 2 pages of SMALL sets that might be somewhat affordable. I don't have space or money for 5 different wolf pack castles. So how about those wagons? Wizard & Popcorn look kinda cool, and not just aspirational megabuilds but maybe something people could afford.

So vote for the modulars.
Aquarium still reigns supreme in terms of level of innovation imo
Makes me rather sad when I go through the sets because there are some I would buy in a heartbeat but I know they'll never make it through due to being less popular/more niche.
Good luck to the castle and modular fans out there because I'm sure they'll have at least one of each in the final round.
Just waiting now for Thursday and the Series 2 lottery!
The 'Crane on Track' https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1608/Crane-on-Track-2.0 doesn't show up for me - is that happening for anyone else?

Shows up for me.
Adventure in Transylvania
Aquarium
Portal of shadows
Odeon theater
These are the standouts IMO. The first would be an actual ’must-buy’ even though it would surely be $400 +-$50, and I normally don’t buy sets that expensive.
If the 5 finalists were all wolfpack castles, do we think Bricklink/Lego would intervene and curate the list a bit? Or do they just let it go wherever it goes?

Lego decides on their own the vote is just used to get an idea which set would be bought the most.

Works for me too. I can't see how the crane lifts the track as there doesn't appear to be any cabling but that's a whole different issue. Super odd as the track appears to be under tension in several images.
Hi! Here my submission “The pirate’s dream”: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1675/THE-PIRATE'S-DREAM It’s a small set, a tribute to the world of pirates that wants to highlight a hidden and funny side of the daily life of the captain of a pirate ship. I hope you like it…If you like it please vote for it. Thank you, have a nice day.
I got the Studgate from the original program and then another one from Series 1.
However, I am not a fan of electronic instructions.
What is the reason behind not providing a printed instruction book?
They really need to raise the threshold to make it to voting. 307 models is far too many. I guess it would be lower if they'd just formally release a castle line...
Very odd. Must be something about my computer, because it works fine on another one.
@eth6113 said:

One submission per person would help. Quite a few have submitted 5 or 6, and one person has submitted 10
Wow, I was not prepared for that amount of castles. . .
A few repeat entries, some interesting ones, but I'm primarily wondering if the site is gonna crash again on 6th when purchase for the next series launches.
There's a ton of similar items that each look great on their own, but they lose a lot when they're surrounded by more of the same.
And just the sheer volume of entries makes everything kind of blur together.
Just a reminder that series 1 sets haven't even shipped yet and crowdfunding hasn't even started on series 2 (starts june 6th)... so having 3 other series before series 1 has even been fulfilled seems a bit of an overkill.
Surely we won't see these winners become sets for another couple of years at this rate?

... among all the others from series five, are top notch in terms of beauty, fun, playability, and size impression to piece count ratio. I'll sense a sabotage if they won't be selected for production.
So many broken links due to bad logic and worse routing in their v3… but I guess that is sort of par for the building experience of Lego doing outside stuff :D
Sure hope they improve and actually check the ID rather than full text title before ordering season rolls around.
But very nice to see so many people posting and hyping both their own and found designs!

To be honest I don't know if that'd be the case. One thing I've noticed is that part of what seems to popularize certain subject matter is what minifigure parts are available (including a plethora of Wolfpack MOCs this round thanks to the recent introduction of modernized Wolfpack torsos). So the introduction of a full castle line might in turn just prompt even more castle projects to be submitted, even if ultimately fewer were selected for crowdfunding.
Though frankly, the way voting works I don't think it's that much of a burden to go down the list and vote on the ones that catch your eye, even with hundreds of submissions overall.

Cost. Production of large printed manuals for such small runs would really increase the price.
I've completed my perusing. I flagged a few "like" and 1 or 2 "love". Most, I marked "No, no God, no, please no". :o)
I agree that something may need to change with this process. LEGO may have painted themselves into a corner, committing to 5 selections per review. It would be interesting if they could tailor the expectations to drive more varied submissions, both in size and theme.
Castles, castles, castles...
13 pages of ideas, almost nothing inspiring there.

Your new construction site is fantastic. I have been a supporter since the very first submission and this one improves on the concept wonderfully. I hope they finally give it the chance. By far the best and freshest take on the Castle theme I have seen throught the series.
They just need to make a castle train station permanently available and the program can end with everyone happy.
there just has to be a wolf pack set made this round, with this amount!
the mushroom village is BY FAR my favourite! Really hope it gets made and I also get to order a copy of the mushroom house on Thursday...

A modular castle train station, lol. :o)
The Aquarium Modular is one large (expensive) set I'd order in a heartbeat--very glad to see it return. Yes, the series is overloaded with Castle, but there are other excellent modulars and some fun miscellaneous sets. I do think there's more of an effort to design smaller sets now that people are aware of what the larger sets will inevitably cost.

I could go for more excellent contraptions from JK Brickworks!
While the lack of originality stands out amongst these I think the bigger problem is lack of aesthetics. The vast majority of these sets look clunky and unrefined with very little polish. I can't imagine submitting a set to be judged by the public without first asking myself "does this look polished and interesting enough so that it could pass as an official LEGO set?".
Either very few are asking themselves this or there are a lot of people with broken aesthetics meters.
Voted no on most of the castle/historical/pirate stuff. Voted yes on the few unique entries like the Clown Carousel and Classic Space train.

Because the people running Bricklink are less interested in running Bricklink than they are in becoming a place that people can sell MOCs. I think this is at least the fourth attempt to do so, and the second or third attempt to do it with rejected Ideas projects.

I was counting all the BDP rounds as a single entry, since they’re marketed as being part of the same program. But before that they had MOC Shop, and I think one other stab at a similar format.

Apperently this program allows some illegal building techniques that normally Lego wouldnt produce or design on its own. Ideas winner sets had to be re designed by Lego themselves, Bricklink sets can be produced as is. Think of it like an experimental program.
There is a new (bigger) addon for the mushroom house from series 2: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1768/Mushroom-Village

Went through them again, and while I think my first impressions might have been a bit too negative, I still think that BDP needs to be careful if they select another round of almost only medieval stuff. Those who are not interested, and designers who do not want to make these things will probably just become less interested.
And that would be a pity, since Series 1 and 2 have some seriously nice sets. I will definitely be online tomorrow to secure my copy of Brick Cross.
Anyway, I also do really like that Odeon Theatre. Other ones I wish would get made (no castles to see here, if only to create some variety), are:

There are two fire lookout towers. Funny thing is, some friends of my parents, who would be pushing 100 if they hadn’t already passed away, spent a summer staffing one of those towers shortly after they got married. I remember them telling me that you got your groceries delivered maybe once a month, and it was common to be down to ketchup on crackers right before your next supply drop.

I think these are all well spaced out and at worst a fun opportunity to showcase and/or peruse. My interests the last couple rounds have been lesser but I am excited for a few already pre-ordered as well as at least one or two still coming up.
Thank you, LEGO."
100% agree - it is all voluntary participation, and if people are upset about the quality of the builds they are free to make their own, show the rest of us up a bit! It is awesome to have this avenue.
I'm starting to give some serious thought to Series 2, starting tomorrow. The Logging Bridge is intriguing but I'm just not sure I can use it in my City as I have such a difficult time stepping down any elevation for my trains. The Mushroom House is great but really more of a whim for me. Brick Cross looks wonderful but how many train stations can I squeeze into my layout? I guess I'm most leaning towards the Pirate Island.
All that being said, I was quite surprised by the pricing this go around. After Rounds 1,2, and 3 and Series 1, I had kind of just chalked up these series as being significantly costly. Maybe it's just sticker shock (in the good way), but these all seem to be much more reasonable than I had been expecting.....more reasonable, not inexpensive. :o)
Not a lot of love for the Art Factory:

That thing is fantastic--and I'm a castle fan and not a city fan. It's my sole vote. I actually don't know why people are loving the Kraken Attack one so much--if you could actually take it off the tentacles and set it up as a ship, I might like it more.

"Wow thank you so much for featuring my "Medieval Construction Site", Huw!
Your new construction site is fantastic. I have been a supporter since the very first submission and this one improves on the concept wonderfully. I hope they finally give it the chance. By far the best and freshest take on the Castle theme I have seen throught the series. "
Thank you very much, I'm happy to create something other builders like. I hoped it would be a great center piece to many medieval towns.
The designer pages only work in Chrome for me, in Firefox they lose the ability to scroll. I can use every other part of bricklink on firefox, just not that part and none of it is mobile friendly either.
I just want the Adventure in Transylvania set. That is all I want. It will be bloody criminal if it doesn’t get picked. It’s probably one of the coolest Lego builds I’ve ever seen. But I’m biased because I love anything spooky!
This is my first time participating in BDP, and I'm rally impressed by the competition. The Popcorn Cart and the Transylvania sets are some of my favourites. My submission is the Chinese water town: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1703/Scenic-Water-Town

True, that set is a static display rather than any version of a toy, to judge by the designer's description of how securely the ship and tentacles are anchored in the base. OTOH, it's a superbly active-looking static display, which is quite an achievement in itself. In that sense, it out-modulars a modular, which also isn't much of a toy. Think of it more as a sculpture--and if you still don't like it, of course, don't vote for it. But I can certainly see the appeal.

I agree! I passed on the Studgate train station because it was so expensive, but Brick Cross does seem to be fair value for money, and I will definitely try to get one. Not, perhaps, as beautiful as Studgate but IMO fits better into the Modular sequence, and still does have a lovely glass roof.

Studgate broke the bank and was a complicated build. But it is one of my most favorite parts of my City. So thankful everyday that I have such a loving wife that allows me to maintain a "LEGO Room" in a house with so many little ones and limited space. :o)

In a bit of a quandary over Brick Cross. Looks excellent and had decided to get it, but now wondering if I can really spare the space. Oh well... a few hours left to make my mind up.
Definitely getting the wonderful Mushroom House though!
Some excellent models, congrats to all the designers! Floating Castle is my favourite.

"I don't 'get' the Bricklink Designer Program. So they're not official LEGO sets, but in a way they are, and it's not IDEAS. How and why and how?"
BDP is pretty similar to Ideas, but the biggest difference between BDP and Ideas is that with Ideas, it’s just the concept that is made into a LEGO set, and LEGO can change it however they like. With BDP, the builds stay relatively unchanged. They are officially released by LEGO, but they are usually put through a limited pre-order release.
So many castle sets (across every BLDP round). :-o
Here's a beautiful minifig-scale build that's something more unique.

Would love a new fully rigged ship

"Hi! Thank you, have a nice day."
This was possibly my favorite of them all and I hope lots of people give this one some love! Bravo! A really unique (and amusing) idea and a nice self-contained display piece. It would end up being a very reasonable price as well.
Really hope https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-5/1821/Adventure-in-Transylvania makes it through.. Don't care that he already had 2 designs selected I need this one!
Not to be mean about any of these submissions as mocs, but as sets I think JonasKramm is still the only submitter who actually gets the assignment
@magmafrost
Why? Because those are the only two you like? The "assignment", according to the host [Bricklink] is pretty straight forward, "a fresh opportunity for LEGO fans to continue submitting digital designs to be realized as a BrickLink Designer Program set". Everything that has been submitted and approved (the 307 sets before you for series 5) meets the guidelines for the "assignment".
There are some designs that are obviously better than others, but some of that is also subjective.
It's funny to see people complain about it being the same "unoriginal" stuff too (castles, modular, trains etc.). When in reality, nearly everything being submitted could arguably be unoriginal. For example, most people can agree that the Mushroom House from series two is a good set. However, that's not the first time someone has come up with that idea, nor the first time something like that has been presented in brick form, so it's not really original.
Also, as someone has already stated here earlier, if you don't like the things that are being submitted, go make your own and submit it.

Agreed. I wish there was more discussion of this set here (although there's plenty of positive comments on BrickLink's The Art Factory page), because IMHO it's brickester's best ever set, which is high praise indeed when one thinks of Brick Cross Station and The Art of Chocolate, both of which made the top five final designs in their respective rounds.
Moreover, despite the elaborate and unique design of The Art Factory (including working elevator), it would presumably be relatively less expensive than those aforementioned sets, seeing that it has a much lower piece-count, and affordable modular-style buildings is something I think many of us can get behind.
Love all the Viking sets this series! My contribution is Serpent Island: descendants of the Midgard serpent inhabit some lions knight ruins on an island at sea.
