Mixels series 2: Frosticons
Posted by Huw,
Today I'm taking a quick look at the second tribe from series two Mixels, the Frosticons.
Slumbo, Lunk and Flurr are members of the "blue Mixel tribe which hails from the frozen crystalline shells of dead volcanoes" according to LEGO.com.
41509 Slumbo
Slumbo was the first one to catch my eye when pictures of this series first emerged, due to the clever use of minifig heads and helmets for its eyes, and now having built him, he doesn't disappoint. They create a look quite different from other Mixels eyes and give him a distinctive personality.
The hinged arms provide a degree of articulation that isn't present on most other Mixels. New ball joints are used for the legs.
The accent colour used for this tribe is, I believe, Medium Azur which more commonly found in Friends sets. It's an excellent colour and there's a good selection of parts in this and the other members in the tribe.
41510 Lunk
Lunk has a long articulated neck that has a wide range of movement thanks to the ball joint at the back. I've not come across the sword/ice parts before but I suspect they are not new. They are a very light transparent blue.
Although the legs use the new ball joints movement is limited to rotating his feet which is a shame: maybe a longer Technic pin/ball joint piece is needed to provide a gap and allow greater freedom of movement.
41511 Flurr
Flurr is the first flying Mixel we've seen. He looks like a ice-breathing dragon or something.
His head swivels on a ball joint and allows for a good degree of poseability, although its proximity to the ground limits how far down it can be tilted. The feet/legs suffer from the same problem as Lunk in that they can only be rotated.
Nevertheless, it's a cool model with lots of playability and, a first for a Mixel, swooshability. I enjoyed seeing pictures of it outdoors at Bricks and Blocks.
Nixel
The naughty Nixel comes with Slumbo and, again, is the same as the one in series 1.
Here's the entire tribe:
I think the three of them are excellent, both in their design and colour scheme. They introduce new and interesting features to the series. Slumbo oozes personality: his eyes and high degree of articulation make him my favourite Mixel so far.
For those that asked, I'll build and review the Max models in due course.
With a slew of new sets out this week and next we have a lot of reviews to post in the next few days, hopefully you're not being overloaded...

I can't wait to get this tribe, these and the purple tribe are the ones I've been most looking forward to. I do wish that Flurr's wing pieces were blue, but aside from that they look great.
They would indeed have been great in blue, even better in trans-blue.
Huw, you read my mind exactly!
I love Lunk. He's got sooo much character!
The sword part previously appeared in 70504 Garmatron.
These Mixels just keep getting better and better :) so simple but so effective, my kids love them!!!
^^ OK thank you. I don't have the later Ninjago sets.
The sword piece has been used before, but not in that color as far as I can see.
My favorite Frosticon is Slumbo - looking forward to getting him. Great Review!
Rather to my surprise, they keep putting Nixels (which I can't help thinking of as little bonus bits, even if they are the enemy) in my favorites from each series. I'm sure those twisted faces will come in handy sometime....
Have to agree about Flurr crying out for trans-blue wings, though. Black just doesn't seem right for him!
Man i so want Flurr
Azure... *drools*
I want to use their parts for MOCs so much, but I can't bring myself to take apart the adorable designs. It's like they sit on my bedside table, mocking me. Great review!
Get more then one
I agree these are brilliant little models in themselves.
The blue colours are also brilliant for all kinds of MOCS .
Hmmmmm... anyone thinking of stealing Slumbo's head crystal for a young Vitruvius staff? :)
ooooooooo great idea. then also use angry kitty's dark red stud with hole.
that peace is not too hard to find but unless you want to get it through a girls set this is your best way

^^YV's staff uses an open-stud in brown, though, which currently does not exist. The Angry Kitty stud is the closest we have.
I have Slumbo Gobba Kraw and Balk from series 2 and Flain, Vulk Zorch Teslo Volectro and Shuff from series 1
i just got all of them but have only opened Slumbo
