Mixels series 2: Fang Gang

Posted by ,

We have a lot of reviews and other good stuff to post this week, so I'll move swiftly on to the last tribe from series 2 Mixels, the Fang Gang.

Apparently they are constantly hungry and on the lookout for food. The "hungry Fang Gang tribe live on a weird farm where they try to plant anything to see if it grows into food", according to LEGO.com.

41512 Chomly

Chomly doesn't look like the brightest Mixel in the box, does he? His eyes rotate on technic pins so you can roll them to make him look as daft as you like. Unlike others in the tribe, his jaw is fixed.

The Fang Gang!

It's good to see dark orange pieces used in this tribe which always a popular colour with builders, myself included. There are a couple of 1x1 bricks with 1 stud on the side used at the back which have appeared in only three sets until now.

The Fang Gang!

41513 Gobba

Gobba is a huge mouth on legs which is perhaps appropriate given the gang's love of food. He, and the others, contain 1x1 cheese slopes in dark brown that until now have only turned up in a few Star Wars sets.

The Fang Gang!

The 1x5 Technic plate used for his feet allows his body to rotate on the central pin and also for the feet to be splayed at an angle. It's good to see a different approach used for limbs but it does mean that this tribe as a whole is a bit light on the new ball joints.

The Fang Gang!

41514 Jawg

Jawg has the perfect name, a cross between jaw and dawg/dog which is exactly what he is. Somehow he manages to look fierce and cute at the same time.

The Fang Gang!

Other than his jaw, he has no articulation.

The Fang Gang!

Nixel

Once again, the Nixel is the same one as in series 1.

The Fang Gang!

Here's the whole gang:

The Fang Gang!

I thought that, given their colour is less appealing than the orange and blue of the other series 2 tribes, I'd like them the least, but actually that's not the case. Jawg is easily the best one here and one of my favourite Mixels.

Overall then, Mixels series two are as good as, if not better, than series one. Those in series one are all bipeds so lack variety but in series two we have a good mix of bipeds, quadrupeds, flying creatures and sea-creature inspired beasts.

The only disappointment is that the Nixels are the same as those in series 1. Surely it wouldn't have been hard to come up with some variation? They are a small, almost superfluous, part of the sets, so it's not a major issue.

Do you have them yet? Which is your favourite? If not, be sure to grab them as soon as you can, in time for our next Mixels building competition which we'll start as soon as they become more widely available and are listed at shop.LEGO.com.

Interesting rare parts... My favorite Mixel is easily Chomly. The FG Max looks good - one of the best in the Mixels theme!

Is the competition going to apply the same rules as last time? (just want to make sure I grab the ones I need since I like most of them)

Pretty much, We'll probably emphasise that aesthetics is the main judging criteria and thus suggest that a Mix using 2 of the same tribe, or a Max, is recommended.

Hmm, this new wave has some nice looking Mixels but sadly there seems to be an overall lack of the new mini ball and socket pieces. The first wave had a lot of them, especially in the larger ones like seismo. These ones are a bit lacking by the look of it.

Which set has the Nixel?

So far, I've just bought one of each tribe, and haven't come across one yet.
I usually go for the one with the most baby-bows (the new half curved slopes), but here Jawg has a handy collection of clip plates.

^ Sorry, should have mentioned: Chomly.

There's a question mark before Jawg in Jawg's section, I think it might be a mistake. Otherwise, great review!

^ The editor keeps inserting them for reasons I can't fathom!

I have all of these too, and I love them, Jawg especially! Can't wait to participate in the contest!

For the contest, do you have to make a Mixel, or can it be anything, as long as it is built from parts of two or three different sets?

Some sort of monster, yes.

Jawg looks like your standard rattata from Pokémon.

Am I the only one here who likes Gobba the best?!? Overall, a great tribe of Mixels, very expressive.

The "hungry Fang Gang tribe live on a weird farm where they try to plant anything to see if it grows into food".

They don't look like they would eat anything you plant.

Thanks for the review!

I'm curious, have you thought about reviewing the official combined monsters from Lego.com? I enjoyed building the one for the yellow tribe.

Can you help me choose one of the mixels, I can't decide!

Jawg reminds me of Woola from John Carter!
