Exo-Suit teaser, with video
Posted by Huw,
More information has been revealed by the Exo-Suit project team: another image showing two red or blue (presumably) space men and one of Pete's trademark turtles. A mysterious video message has turned up on YouTube, too. Watch it after the break...

Excellent teaser!
I really like the marketing approach for this exo-suit!
At first I was not planning on buying it but I do get excited by these teasers.
The pics and video are fantastic - I'm loving all these teasers !
Loving it Pete.
My hope is they reveal the suit sometime late tomorrow. These teasers are just getting me pumped! (As pumped as the reveal of a LEGO set can make you) :)
I noticed the US Lego Store calendar for July mentioned VIP early access for an upcoming set. Has it been said what it is? I hoped it would be the Exo-Suit, if not the Research Institute that has already been revealed recently.
So excited.
@CaptainBlockbeard
VIP early access is for the Mini Cooper that is due for release in August!
Brilliant video, was that Pete who voiced the character?
Amazing video!!!!
I don know if it was announced yet, but Exo Suit will go on sale in august.
Maybe the best lego marketing campaign ever.
Cool! It looks like the turtle was redesigned with the pieces for the top guns and a head redesign. This is a good sign one will be included in the set if it looks like LEGO Ideas tweaked it. The spaceman had Zane's face, too.
That is excellent, really looking forward to this one.
@CapnRex101 That is indeed Pete voicing the male character. He is an enormous thespian on the quiet.
Looks great and teaser is a nice touch
Why does this one get all of this special marketing and none of the others did? Are people just that excited about this famous MOC becoming an Ideas set? It seems a little odd that this one gets all the campaigning, but it should be revealed within the next week or so. I did notice that the speaker had Zane's face, and that it had TLM style animation (i.e. accurate motion range of minifigures).
Everything is still black and white. Heh. Pete is a real tease! :D
Nothing to say except that I can't wait!
@BrickBuddy19
but their is also an early access in August
i wonder if this is the final or the original

@Packer221: The instructions on how to build one are included in the LEGO Adventure Book.
Anyway, these teasers are great! I can't wait for the set to be revealed.
@8BrickMario
I think there are a few reasons for the campaign.
This is the first set from Cuusoo/Ideas that is an entirely unique design, all others before it have been based on scientific equipment or existing IPs, if they put a strong campaign behind another set, they would have been cross-promoting something that is not Lego, which not only may draw attention AWAY from Lego, but may have legal hurdles and expenses as well.
This is also a set that had a lot of AFOL enthusiasm behind it. It's designed by a celebrated AFOL and is iconic of a subgenre (Neo Classic Space) that is a favorite of people who grew up with Legos in the 70s-80s (AFOLs). Traditional toy advertising doesn't really work on adults, for one thing; and as AFOLs spend a lot of their hobby time online (looking up news, sharing MOCs, etc) a viral marketing strategy would naturally seem effective.
This is also the first time since Cuusoo has become Ideas that Lego can really throw some money at the Ideas team to experiment with marketing Ideas releases. Cuusoo was technically the "beta" phase of Ideas, and Lego only devoted a small team and budget for an unproven prospect.
Apparently Cuusoo was successful enough to grow into Lego's brand fully, and although the Ghostbuster's car was the first release under the Ideas name, it was right on the cusp of Cuusoo being Ideas.
The reason the Exo Suit may be getting more attention than the Research Institute because Lego believes there is a sizable enough AFOL consumer market that they wish to satisfy. RI is more of a standard CITY set, ES is an AFOL sweetheart. Maybe this marketing strategy will be a one-off kind of thing, if it is successful, maybe it will become regular.
@Coson: Instructions for the Turtle or Exo-Suit? LEGO Space has instructions for the Turtle as well.
Since when does Zane have an English accent? Or a spacesuit... :P
Wow, a LEGO Exo-suit AND a M364 Turtle?!? This must be Pete's dream set! Lets hope the Exo's redesign follows the model for the turtle, with only the necessary changes. :)
Buying it along with the Research Institute.
@Coson - I was about to say the same thing as Packer221, that the redesigned turtle is a pretty good indication that it may be included in the set. The instructions on how to build it in the Lego Space book I believe are slightly different than what was in this video (I've moved since I got that book, and it's not in a random box somewhere, so I can't double check that).
> Exo Suit may be getting more attention than the Research Institute because Lego believes there is a sizable enough AFOL consumer
Yeah, I may undestand that RI isn't an sci-fi inspired idea so it would be like a City set to a Space set. Still, I don't think I'm happy to see Exo Suit get more advertisings while RI don't, especially for those doubts about the lack of investment in RI set designs. I personally think each Idea set should have a good series of commercial in order to market the website more properly.
@Dorayaki - I don't know what the news situation has been like in Taiwan but here in the UK loads of the news media have been all over the RI because of its pro-female message. TLG have been very clever with Ideas marketing in my opinion, they know that Ghostbusters appeals to the nerdy crowd, so they let the internet carry the bulk of the buzz for that, they know that RI will work well to the feminist masses, so let the news media do their thing with that and they know that the Exo-Suit is for the AFOLs, particularly the Classic space fans, so they let Peter Reid (whose Flickr feed is a wash with classic space) promote his own project to the right market!
After watching the video and seeing who made it, I think it's important to realize the Exo-suit has this unique media-heavy marketing approach because of the team Pete has around him. OblongPictures has teamed up with Pete to make several Classic Space themed videos in the past, and this seems a natural extension of that.
In short, the necessary talent happened to be there to create this release campaign.
@MOCDoc:
That spaceman just happens to be using Zane's head or facial print on a flesh head. We can't tell, because the video is black-and-white. Peter Reid voiced that spaceman.
The question is... how many can I buy?
@Mr. PicnicBasket - I wondered if that might be the case with the voice.
This is a great marketing campaign!
@Coson: Yeah, I know. I just noticed they changed the design of it form the book, which could mean LEGO did it to make it it their liking. This could mean it will come in the set. Anyways, I don't have the time to hunt down the parts of it. :P
Oh my oh my... I am so excited!!!!
There's another pic on the photostream, albeit a similar one to this one, although the door is closer... :)
@Mr. PicnicBasket: The turtle, it would have been to good to be true if it was the exo-suit. :)
@Packer: Ah, I see. It will to be interesting if a turtle is included, as there isn't one in the project.
Just a thought, but I'd love to see this in black as a limited edition Blacktron variant!
The teaser video is fab! Great work :-)
Anyone else think it's black and white because the spacemen are coming in a new colour?
^ I wonder if the spacewoman has a pink suit? It would certainly explain the B&W pics and mini-movie.
I think today's reveal is a bit disappointing... hopefully tomorrow we'll see what's behind that door!
EDIT: http://www.thebrickfan.com/ is showing a tease for the boxart of the Exo-Suit. There is also a closeup of the left arm: The model is as greebled as ever, but the hand is built onto the 2x2 plate with octagonal bar and now has 5 fingers. A 2x2 round barrel in dark grey has replaced the silver wheel rim. I'm so excited!!!!!
EDIT 2: The arm has a 2x2 inverted dome in light bluish grey. New in that color.
Holy mackerel, that pic looks pretty promising! Doesn't look like it will be in blue and trans yellow... BUT it still looks great! That top section of the suit looks very interesting too, hope to see more later! :)
huh... not sure how I feel about the changes so far. I get having to change the fragile legs, but the use of the barrel and the octagonal bar are totally unnecessary.
I don't get the need for redesign there, kind of disappointed.
I don't know, maybe in real life the fingers would keep falling of the technic wheel, or the wheel piece couldn't be attached to the arm securely. The only wierd thing for me so far is that thumb, it looks like it should be one pin up, but I'll have to see it in person to be sure.
@dragonboy
Perhaps for the hand, and admittedly it's a change that still resembles the original, but the barrel? I can't not see it as a barrel and the 2x2 dome without stud notches just looks.... weird
Also looks like we lost the single antenna for 5 greeble-spines.
Getting worried.
Again, we'll just have to see it in person to be sure. At the moment, I'm not too happy about the spines either, but they may be inter-changeable with other accessories or "flow" with the rest of the model's aesthetics. I'm trying to keep my hopes high for this set, just the anticipation! :)
That's no 2x2 dome... that's a lampshade/flowerpot piece in light grey...
http://brickset.com/parts/design-15395
It must fit inside the barrel and connect to an axle of some sort to make a spinning wrist!
I am excited. Very Excited. I LOVE CLASSIC SPACE!
sorry.
By the way, in the static/noise image at the beginning of the video, the colors in the top row are all the colors of the classic space uniforms. Yellow, red, blue, black and white... plus green. I may be grasping at straws here, but it may be a hint about the theory that the video and images are in B&W in order to hide a new color of spacesuit. I know many individuals (Pete Reid included) have expressed interest in green classic space suits in the past. I know I would love to see that!
Yea, the anticipation's killing me, too.
People apparently lost their minds when the Delorean didn't have a flat hood (or "bonnet" for you Brits) and still won't get over it, so I'm curious what any changes to this might do.
^^ I said 2x2 INVERTED dome. That's my name for the flowerpot/lampshade.
I'll probably just take off 4 of the greeble-spines. That doesn't seem quite right, and neither does the extra finger. That's easy to take off.
