Review: 40822 Jack-O'-Lantern Pickup Truck

Posted by ,

During a recent visit to the LEGO store, I was pleasantly surprised to see two seasonal additions - the first was 40825 Halloween Wreath. I was just as excited to see 40822 Jack-O'-Lantern Pickup Truck.

While LEGO has produced seasonal sets every year, it's been a while since I picked up a seasonal vignette. To my mind, there's no such thing as too many seasonal vignettes, so it was given that I got this immediately.

Summary

40822 Jack-O'-Lantern Pickup Truck, 177 pieces.
£12.99 / $14.99 / €14.99 | 7.3p/8.5c/8.5c per piece.

A fun return (for me) to seasonal vignettes

  • Appropriately spooky vehicle
  • Nice minifigure
  • Hidden compartment
  • Is that a frown or a moustache on the jack-o'-lantern?

Inside the box there are four small numbered bags, a larger plate, and an instruction book. There are no stickers.

The minifigure in this set is the driver of the pickup truck. He's wearing dungarees, however the bib portion is not the same colour as the pants, which is a bit annoying. Both colours go well with the sand green shirt he's wearing.

I was going to say that he's wearing Indiana Jones' hat, but it turns out that while this fedora hat piece has been used in licenced sets, Indiana Jones is not one of them!

The minifigure is sweating, though it's unclear whether it's from some kind of exertion, or he's more than a little nervous about the cargo on the pickup truck.

The vehicle is a low rider. The space in the front allows for only the driver, which is understandable considering the flatbed is bearing the largest Halloween pumpkin ever.

The front of the truck has transparent bright green accents and headlights and features a large bone for a front fender. Perhaps we have discovered the reason the driver is nervous - there's an enormous spider crawling on the dashboard!

The rear of the truck shows more of the leaves, and back up lights in purple.

One side of the jack-o'-lantern includes a face - sinister eyes, and what I think it supposed to be a menacing grimace. However, I keep seeing a moustache. With that perspective, the large pumpkin doesn't look quite so ominous.

The top of the pumpkin lifts up to show off a couple of surprises - a smaller pumpkin and a skull. I'm not sure how the driver manages to lift the top off the pumpkin, but maybe it's haunted?

Overall thoughts

I'm always happy to see a seasonal vignette! This is a fun little scene, and has the bonus of having some good play value. For me, I can see this set fitting in quite well with my Halloween display, especially driving up to 10228 Haunted House or 75904 Mystery Mansion.

It looks like the price point for seasonals has increased to $15, which I don't mind as it allows a few more bricks to make for a good display. I really hope vignettes are back!

Love this little vehicle as a bit of a fun Halloween build. I do think however it is meant to be a moustache rather then any sort of grimacing mouth.

Yeah even when the first images of this came out I couldn’t see anything but a moustache

Not bad, although I must confess I much prefer last years 40697 Halloween Pumpkin freebie!

I love this! The mustache-o-lantern should become a thing.

Not really sure what the designer had in mind when they designed that face. I mustache them a question...

That pumpkin looks like Wilford Brimley

He is quite cross about all these questions regarding the mustache. You should never doubt the pumpkin power mustache.

It’s a squashed car with a Mustached Pumpkin. What’s not to love?! Well, it still doesn’t interest me, but it’s fun nonetheless.

There's no way that's not a moustache.

Furthermore, rotate the other two curved black tiles a bit and the eyes would look like shades!

By in Japan,

I bought this on its release totally by chancebut absolutely love it! I trekked down to my closest Lego store (90mins away by bullet train) to get the new One Piece Leho sets. But i stumbled upon this one in the shop and snapped it up on my way to the till. No trick and all treat, definitely one if the spooktacularly better Halloween sets!

At first glance, I thought it was Ron Swanson as a pumpkin.

I was trying to figure out what bothered me about having pickup in the set name . It is the lack of a truck cab.

This review helped me realize I could easily make the set part of an Autumn Festival / Halloween parade. That way the inaccurate “pickup” and ginormous mustachioed pumpkin fit right into the exaggerated esthetic.????

By "Indiana Jones sets don't have this hat", are you just referring to the Dark Brown color? The character prior to the most recent whimper of sets was probably the most prominent minifigure to use the mold itself.

It's a neat set and scratches more of the spooky itch, but does feel a bit lacking for the price.

Hah! The niche overlap of Lego Fan, Minecraft Fans, and Brickset users that will get that reference.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can last year’s pumpkin replace that one in the truck??

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Seems terribly overpriced, especially compared to 40746 which looks way more substantial for the same price point.

By in New Zealand,

Well I've had to look up "Wilford Brimley", "Ron Swanson", and "MumboJumboPumkin".

There is so much to learn here at Brickset!

Nice review @MeganL. Yes, I agree it looks like a mustache although this would be very easy to customise with other shaped black tiles.

If I hadn't had my stroke, I'd probably still be playing Minecraft and might get the reference.

Think it looks like Tom Selleck

He was considered for Indiana Jones...

Well for those who don't know, Mumbo Jumbo is a very popular Minecraft Youtuber who is mainly known for making videos about redstone contraptions, but also because his character skin sports a very prominant moustache.

He also had a cameo in the recent minecraft movie, and designed several of the contraptions that feature in it, such as the cactus launcher.

Cute set - I also can't see anything but a moustachio'd monster pumpkin - but the quality of that torso print is shockingly weak in opacity. Are Lego using watercolours for the paint application?!

So I might not have gotten the reference then, as about the only Minecraft stuff I ever watched on YouTube was the Achievement Hunter Let's Play. (RIP, Rooster Teeth.)

Gourdito

Any DrMcNinja fans?
No? His sidekick is Gordito, a 12-year Mexican boy who grew his own mustache through sheer force of will to help get revenge on his family's killers... It strikes me that most kindred Brickset users here would enjoy this web-based comic or the graphic novel omnibus version. Well worth a look.
Anyway, if I get this set, I will have a Gourdito.

High Road to China, The Thing, and The Natural are some of my favorite Wilford Brimley roles. Parks and Rec brought us the wonderful Ron Swanson character.
