Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 4854 Doc Ock's Bank Robbery, released during 2004. It's one of 8 Spider-Man sets produced that year. It contains 176 pieces and 5 minifigs, and its retail price was US$20/£17.99.
It's owned by 1,801 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $234.10, or eBay.

Those early Spiderman sets were so good.
Why on earth is this piddly 2004 set worth so much?
I was hoping that either today's RMotD or RSotD be a sci-fi one. 6929 would have been particularly apt.
I have this one. The bank and the police car were both cool little builds.
Plus, it was (at the time) a nifty way to pick up a Doc Ock figure. This was before Lego really did a lot of Marvel and DC (I'm not even sure if the Batman sets were out, by this point in 2004).
And hey, look at that! This was the original release of the subway train fight set. Good times.

Beacuse Spiderman, I guess.
Even the smallest 1374 is obscenely expensive.
I just watched this movie for the first time recently, and I really liked it. This set is cool, too.

Batman ran 2006-2008.
This would be $49.99 today lol.
If...it's his bank...then; WHY IS HE ROBBING IT!?!?...:D

It’s complicated and involves an insurance floater policy.

It's all for tex evasion purposes.
@TheOtherMike: I think you mean 'Tax Evasion', but maybe his is run for Mexico bypassing Texas....:D
@yellowcastle: I...see...did this 'plan' start with him yelling at Spidey "Give me the money, and I'll give you the web..."...No? (Seriously, when I heard it was the same actor, I was like "No Way...":)...Only had that same reaction with Ke Huy Quan in "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once", realizing that he was 'Data' from "The Goonies"...and some other role, ironic to this comparison...:))
Someone I knew had this set. It's quite small and simple, but it's quite good for what it was at the time. It's just the right size for its play value.
And now that I have 4856 Doc Ock's Hideout I can say the Doc Ock fig is a lot of fun by itself!
Not worth the current aftermarket prices though. I'm glad I got that one for a reasonable price both times (I sold my first one just a few years in but got another copy a few years later).

He wants to liquify some assets. He's got projects to manage with all those arms you know! And it beats going through -ugh- procedures!
"Hmm... Which one of these hundred dollar bills looks better?"

It's the early characters. They had really good printing and are considered to be quite rare.
My mother picked up 4850 Spider-Man's First Chase at a garage sale, and gave it to my son for his birthday in 2012.
We were exclusively into Star Wars in those days. We considered her gift as almost a throw-away, and never bothered to build it or really even look at it.
Good thing we didn't. He was quite happy to sell Spidey for a cool $150.
"You're getting on my nerves."
"I have a knack for that."
"Not anymore."
This image raises some questions. It really looks to my old eyes like Generic Trike Cop is a yellow-skinned minifigure. And that would have been, according to this documentary I watched a few years ago, awesome.
It's not exactly helpful that that face IS available in bright yellow. Sorry, I know we're supposed to talk about Dock Ock's terrible hair and shredded pecs, but I'm now dreaming of a world where pink, brown and yellow live in perfect harmony, robbing banks together.

Yes.
Thank you.
I know.
I noticed that thing you said.
I also noticed that the same face exists in yellow. Which is why I said this thing that I said. I also noticed that it's probably due to my bad eyesight. Which is why I said that other thing that I said.
Which is why I'm now saying these things that I'm saying. I hope this clarifies things, especially the things that I said, with the things I'm now saying.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
I miss the fouliiferous tree for storing $100 tiles.

In 2025, LEGO robs your bank.

It very well could be an error on lego's part. Itvreally does look like a yellowfig. The switch to fleshies happened that year and I recall catalogs and in rare cases boxes made mistakes like that. It was recent enough that the prototype art of the Harry Potter wave of 2004 has the sets like the final result but the figs are fleshies (and the dementors are prototypes of course).

Better question. Why on earth 2013 comcon028 Spider-Man minifig is worth over $ 10 000 ?

It wouldn't surprise me if it was a yellow head that was digitally hue-shifted. It doesn't look yellow to me, but it doesn't look quite right for light nougat either (although then again, neither does Doctor Octopus' skintone).
Am I the only one who regularly forgets these Spider-Man sets existed?

"Alright, let's do this one more time..."
The dynamic staging of everything in the box art for this is so well done, you can just hear the themes from the movie fitting right in even though it's LEGO. That's also a testament to Raimi's willingness to lean a bit more into the camp of the comics and Danny Elfman's incredible work on the score because even when translated to LEGO, it all still works.
Should've included Aunt May and a toaster.
Just watched Spider-Man 2 yesterday. I second @EtudeTheBadger ‘s opinion, a toaster would be a fun detail.

I hate it when I make a typo and don't realize it until it's to late to edit the post... I mean yes, that is absolutely what I meant.
Two heads that were originally started as yellows. Man, it just feels unsettling seeing them in flesh tones. The set is a classic 2000s playset. Barebones but great for kids to imagine scenes with larger structures.

Aunt May is tucked away in the background there, cannot confirm if some of the pieces can be formed into a toaster though
