Quick look: 5009609 Captain Jack Sparrow's Compass
Posted by Huw,
5009609 Captain Jack Sparrow's Compass is the gift with purchase at LEGO.com when you buy 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Ship on or before the 18th of September.
Summary
5009609 Captain Jack Sparrow's Compass, 151 pieces.
A fairly decent GWP but not a must-have
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
The instrument, also known as Tia Dalma's compass, is in an octagonal box with a hinged lid that's 10 studs in size, so it's quite substantial, and probably close to life-sized, although I imagine it's somewhat thicker than the film prop.
A transparent dome on the top allows the dial to be viewed without opening it.
The compass print on a 6x6 radar dish is unique to this set, and replicates that of the film prop pretty well.
The dial can be rotated by hand: unfortunately, unlike Jack's, this one does not point to what the owner wants most (unless you're standing in the middle of a LEGO shop :-) ).
Overall, it's a decent GWP that's somewhat related to the model it comes with, but if you miss out on getting it, I don't think you'll be too disappointed.

Isn't this compass supposed to be dark blue and gold, not black and nougat?

Yes, but this is cheaper — sorry, more cost-effective.

It's whatever your heart desires it to be.....

Isn't the compass supposed to be made from walrus tusk, not Lego bricks? Fancy Lego letting such an inaccuracy slip in. Better demand an explanation from the designer.
At least this actually makes sense to have 'Captain Jack Sparrows...' in the title.
It's a mouthful saying "When you purchase LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Ship, you'll also receive 5009609 Captain Jack Sparrow's Compass as a gift-with-purchase.
Phew!
The Disney store model is even color accurate. It's a little puzzling why Lego didn't match the colors correctly, or even closely.

Sounds like a great question for the IP rights holders that said this was good…

The correct response.

Interview with John Lego; Illuminati Overlord of Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship
I think they need to start calling PotC "Captain Jack Sparrow's Film Series."

Is it?
So we shouldn't expect Lego sets based on something to have the correct colour, it would have been ok for the black pearl to be dark blue?
Don't get me wrong, this is a GWP and we get a nice printed element so I'm happy. They probably don't have all the right parts available to make this in the correct colour. But it is a valid criticism, unlike asking why it's not made from walrus tusk.

The images here suggest not. Nougat is probably a bit dark, but black looks realistic.

I do like this thing, I'm just not entirely sure I see $300 of value here.
At least it comes with a pretty nice ship as a GWP, I guess.
Based on the wiki image, I'd almost say dark brown and a light bley would work better. Interesting.
But I won't be getting the ship immediately so I won't be getting this. I guess I don't desire it most.
The color of the prop seems fairly ambiguous, given that the high-contrast color grading of the movies makes it particularly dark. In my book, these colors are acceptable, though I understand diehards being disappointed in possible inaccuracy through the simplification to black.

The dress is clearly white and gold.
Definitely gold, brass to match the printed circle around the dish, but not nugget. I would also prefer a Jack Sparrow rowing boat or a quayside than a paperweight.
"The dial can be rotated by hand: unfortunately, unlike Jack's, this one does not point to what the owner wants most (unless you're standing in the middle of a LEGO shop :-) )." One of the best lines I've seen in a review in a while. I really wish that 5009045 had had the budget for a new printed piece, but at least you didn't have to buy a set that cost almost four hundred dollars to get that one.

"John Lego." I don't like to bring up politics in Brickset comment threads, but I can't help but be reminded of Trump's "Tim Apple."

I guess what you're saying is, we need some sort of... shadowy version of this box?

"I understood that reference."
I am really dissapointed how this GWP was handled - At the time of release 12.9. 0:00 CET there was no possibility to order, I already saw videos online mentioning it too. I waited 15min before giving up and going to sleep. When I get back from work at 15:00 the ship was already on backorder and no gwp added to basket (CZ location). But on other locations, when I changed countries it was still availiable. Why do we have 3 days ahead to order it before release when not everyone can get GWP specifically made for this set? That GWP was main reason to preorder. I really want this ship, but can wait for huge discount now, no reason to buy from TLG. Just dissapointing.
Isn't this compass supposed to be fictional, not a real physical object?
