Adventurers please.
Total baller
(I mean, he's got a sphere cannon)
Probably my favourite of all the Inika, I just really love the colour combination. Bionicle usually used trans-neon orange, this guy using the duller shade makes him stand out in a very nice way.
Also, only Toa Inika who hadn’t been picked for RSOTD yet! That’s all six done now

Holding out for double Darkwing...
The Inika were certainly... something. They paved the way for the body standard for the next couple of years of Bionicle, but they also were unique with their weird rubbery masks and bulky light up weapons. And let us not forget they introduced the thru-axle ball joint, a great part. Not the worse line of Toa, but I wouldn't put them as the best either. (Personal tastes, of course.)
Personally I kind of liked Jaller's Calix mask design. I also appreciated the trans orange sockets used on him. (Although it was a shame they weren't trans neon orange.)
A part of me wants to keep things quick tonight, but Jaller's also one of my favorites sooooo....
Jaller was once a Matoran of Fire living in the City of Metru Nui. During the Great Cataclysm, the people of Metru Nui were forced to evacuate from the wrath of the Makuta. During the escape, Lhikan, the city's old protector, died fighting the Makuta. Vakama took his mask to continue his legacy.
The Matoran successfully evacuated to the island of Mata Nui above. During transit, Jaller's mask was shattered. Without a mask Matoran become incredibly weak, eventually going comatose and dying. Vakama gave Jaller Lhikan's mask to save his life.
In the coming 1,000 years Jaller proved himself a great warrior and rose become Captain of the Ta-Koro Guard. It was his troop that first discovered Tahu when he arrived on the island and nearly attacked him, mistaking him for a beast. In truth, Jaller would be one of the few Matoran brave enough to stand up to Tahu, in one instance saving the Toa from his recklessness by reminding him he's more useful to his people alive.
Thanks in no small part to the Battle of Kini Nui, Jaller would become unlikely friends with the Chronicler Takua. The two went on many adventures together, notably helping Le-Koro and Ga-Koro in the Bohrok War. Eventually the two were chosen to be Ta-Koro's Kohli Team, and made it all the way to the finals.
But Takua, ever the wanderer, was late for the final match. He had snuck off to explore, and Jaller found him inspecting a strange stone. Inside, Takua managed to uncover a mysterious artifact... The Mask of Light. The two Matoran were nearly caught in a swelling river of lava but were rescued by Tahu. They made it to the Kohli match just in time... and lost. After the match the Mask of Light fell out of Takua's pack. Whenever Takua touched the mask it started to glow, but he tilted it so all its light shone on Jaller.
The Turaga revealed that this mask would lead a herald to the location of the Seventh Toa. Takua convinced everyone Jaller was the herald and he should go on the journey, but Jaller shot back that, as Chronicler, Takua should come with him to record the journey.
The two followed the mask's light all across the island. During their travels Makuta contacted Takua and threatened to kill Jaller if he did not hand over the mask. Takua initially tried to run, but when it became clear to him the Makuta's forces were after him and not the mask, he returned to Jaller to finish the mission.
The two made it to Kini-Nui where they were ambushed by the Rahkshi. While the Toa dealt with most of the beasts, one of them managed to close in on Takua. Jaller took a killing blow meant for Takua, and with his dying breaths convinced the Matoran to embrace who he truly was. Takua donned the Mask of Light and was transformed into Toa Takanuva.
Takanuva descended into Makua's lair and dueled the titan. In the end the two fell into a vat of Energized Protodermis and were fused into one entity, wielding both light and shadow. This entity decided to sacrifice a portion of Makuta's life force to bring Jaller back to life, and opened the great gate that separated Metru Nui from Mata Nui. As the strain of the door became too much, the fusion split. Takanuva was cast out into the crowd, and Makuta was crushed, seemingly dead.
When the Matoran returned to their ancestral homeland of Metru Nui, the Turaga elders discovered a horrible truth. The Great Spirit Mata Nui was not merely asleep, he was dying. The only way to revive him was with the Mask of Life, located far south in Voya Nui. The six Toa Nuva were sent to retrieve the mask, but went in secret to not worry the people.
But when weeks went by without their heroes, Jaller did worry. He was sick of the Turaga always keeping secrets and organized a city-wide strike for answers. Against the wishes of the council, Turaga Nokama revealed the truth. Jaller went to his most trusted friends Matoro, Hahli, Kongu, Nuparu, Hewkii, and Takanuva, and together they went off to find Voya Nui.
The first obstacle they faced was just south of Metru Nui, the lands of Karzahni. A great veil of shadow encased the land, and Takanuva was forced to retreat. Within this shadowy veil they held hands to stick together. Partway through, a strangers hand griped Matoro's. He held on tight determined to guide the stranger out, but just as they reached the light, the stranger slipped away. The six Matoran proceeded, and were captured by Karzahni himself. The dark warlord loved running twisted experiments on Matoran, including stripping them of their old identities. He took all of their masks (including Lhikan's famous Hau) and gave them new ones. Before he could mess with them further, the six manged to find a secret vault of Toa Canisters beneath the island and escaped for Voya Nui.
On the shores of Voya Nui, the Canisters were struck by lightning from the mysterious Red Star. This transformed them into Toa imbued with extra electric powers, the Toa Inika. The Inika emerged to find Voya Nui in chaos. The Toa Nuva had been captured by the vile Piraka, who were using a mind control serum to enslave its people. The Inika teamed up with the Matoran survivors and stormed the Piraka's Stronghold, freeing the Nuva and using an antidote the free the remaining Matoran.
Eventually the Toa Inika trialed the Piraka to a hidden staircase of 777 steps. Along the way they faced many trials. A room of illusions that made them think they killed the Toa Nuva. A room that demanded a sacrifice; Matoro offered himself, but it let him live. Umbra, a being who could move as fast as light, who Matoro bounced off of mirrors. Eventually they found the Piraka, defeated and unconscious at the feet of the Mask of Life's final guardians. Vezon and his great spider-mount Fenrakk.
As the fight went on, Vezon willingly forced his mount to retreat and kill itself in the lava bellow. As a part of the Mask of Life's curse, its guardians could never die, and Fenrakk was transformed into the deadly dragon Kardas. Despite the beast's ferocity, the Toa managed to pluck the Mask from the back of Vezon's head... and it flew away!
The Mask of Life dove into the Black Waters down toward the underwater city of Mahri Nui, trying to find Karda Nui, the place it was meant to be used. The Inika followed and were transformed by the Mask's power into the water breathing Toa Mahri. There beneath the sea they were beset by the Barrakii Warlords, who wanted the Mask for themselves.
While beneath the waves the Mahri helped the Matoran of the underwater city escape for the surface. But their fights with the Barrakii went on too long. By the time they had retrieved the Mask it was too late. Mata Nui was dead.
But Matoro refused to give up. Jaller and the other four would fend the Barrakii and their great army off while he took the mask to Karda Nui. As the fight raged on Jaller realized how hopeless it was. But he had a terrible plan. He would unleash a Nova Blast. A great burst of Elemental Energy that should be powerful enough to wipe out the Barrakii's armies, but would likely kill Jaller and his friends as well. At least... it could buy Matoro time.
But Matoro didn't need time. He managed to reach Karda Nui where the Mask told him what to do. If he wore the Mask of Life he would die, his life force siphoned away to revive Mata Nui. Matoro put on the Mask with zero hesitation or fear, and as thanks for his bravery it granted him one wish. Matoro wished his friends were home, safe and sound, and it was so. Jaller managed to stop his Nova Blast just in time, amazed that they were back home in Metru Nui, and the stars had returned to the sky! But the Mahri's joy was short lived... when the realized they were only five.
As a Toa Inika Jaller wore the Kanohi Calix, the Great Mask of Fate. This mask let its user push their body to its maximum capacity, moving/dodging at intense speeds and leaping impossible gaps. It made him an incredibly flighty fighter. He was imbued with Inika, or "The Energies of a Star." This made his face glow with blinding light, and granted him Lightning powers on top of the typical Fire ones. He could channel these powers through an Energized Flame Sword that would pulse and flash green. Velika gifted him a multi-shot Zamor Sphere Launcher. Zamors could hold many fluids, but Jaller's were full of Energized Protodermis. This could counteract the Antidermis virus the Piraka had used on the enslaved Matoran and break their mind control.
The Toa Inika were originally going to have glow-in-the-dark heads, I'm still upset that Lego changed their minds on that. Not only because I love GITD pieces, but it would have looked cool with the heads glowing through the eye- and mouth-holes in the masks.
Hey, did Jaller ever rescue The All American Rejects from the Piraka?
Back 2 back.
Recently I bought a bunch of instructions of sets I had re-acquired that didn't have them. In Jaller Inika's case it's because I completed my current set of him from a bulk lot that only had some of the parts, I believe mostly just the dark red ones and the torso cover. I can't wait to rebuild so many of my sets with physical instructions again!
In general I love that I can now take out instructions again. The previous years my house was too small to have space to take them out of storage as those boxes were always burried underneath other boxes and I had no room for a cabinet to put them in. It feels great to build fully anolog again :)
Would recommend!
Anyway, this is a decent toa. Of the Inika I think Nuparu is probably the best but Jaller has a fun color scheme. The zamor spheres are also an interesting color, resembling trans bright orange but not quite that, looking slightly duller in tint. I somehow found a seller who sold those, but I don't recall the name ofvthe color. I recall that Bricklink just listed it ass trabs neon green, which is not the case. At least in the ones I've seen. And you could see them in the packaging back in the day along with the sword!
I think it was trans light green or trans light blue
Bionicle, the peak of my childhood! I still have a few of the, and they’re holding up very nicely.
The Inika, as the wave's canister group, is a mixed bag for me: introduced a new scale of sets, many mainstay elements for the remainder of G1 originate here, and the sets looked absolutely stunning compared to 2005. However, the sets were still threading new ground with many unpolished details. Although the masks were beautiful, they don't fit with any other head connector other than their own, the neck area is a joke, and the proportions are strange (thanks to the ginormous masks and lanky extremities). Despite the shortcomings, I still have very fond memories of the Inika.
Jaller was one of the stronger outings from the wave - a clearly elemental-looking weapon, transparent pieces, and a vivid color scheme made this one stand out in some regards.
PS: Move Along remains the best tune of all songs used in Bionicle.
At last, a set I own. Always found his sword thing the coolest thing in the world. It reminds me of the ones used in Legends of Chima.
Inika (and Piraka) has got to be my favorite Bionicle line. Probably because I spent so much time playing Voya Nui online game and Bionicle Heroes. Not to say the previous ones were worse, it's just that I wasn't so exposed to them as I was to the 2006 line.

The transparent orange ball connectors go well with the blood red body and the gold armor and unique sword are to die for.

Huh, I didn't know that. Based on the instructions for Jaller, I'm not sure why the old voodoo ball wouldn't have worked.

Well, he *is* taller than previous versions of the character.

I just recently sold this set, but I had mistakenly put the old ball piece without the through-axle hole on it. It was EXTREMELY difficult to remove from the connector piece. With the through-hole you can push the axle partly through and use it to pry the ball from the socket. Without that... yeah wasn't fun, though I did finally remove it thankfully with no damage to the connector. I was surprised.
Lots of nostalgia for this one. I wouldn't say that the Inika are my favorite group of Toa, but they evoke a whole lot of specific memories and moods.
A tangent from the actual build: the canisters for the Inika are both where canisters peaked and lost their way. Having the "try-me" window for the weapon and the Zamor spheres on the top gave them incredible interactive shelf presence, showing off the gimmicks the most strongly, but they were also the first canisters to ditch the mostly cylindrical form factor and go for a boxier "flat" shape, which led to the comparatively boring Q32008/2009 and Stars/HF canisters. I imagine the shift was partly for shelf visibility and partly for the wider pieces being introduced, but they started losing the "can" part of the brand identity. Slowly they just became plastic boxes, and then Lego stopped seeing the point of them. We got the HF breakout bags, which were novel for a bit and I'd probably be nostalgic for tearing open a NSIB one, but then for the Bionicle reboot they went for flat-canister-shaped boxes... I'm glad they kept a unique form factor for the packaging, but I miss real canisters, something Lego would never do today...

I may be wrong, but didn't that part first show up in the construction of the pistons on Axonn and Brutaka's legs in the winter wave, before these guys arrived in the summer?

In any case, Jaller himself! Cool as he is, somehow, I feel like I never really clicked with the character once he became a Toa. It's weird, because as a Matoran in 2001 - 2003 (1391 and 8594) he had been one of my favourite characters: the stern, serious Captain of the Guard who gradually warmed up to cooperating with the other villages and to an unlikely friendship with Takua; and even despite the way the movie rather decreased his maturity level I had really loved him in that too.
I absolutely do like his set as an Inika (although I feel like his trans-orange parts should be trans-yellow to call back to his Matoran colour scheme); but that's true of all the Inika, rather than being specific to him. They were THE most poseable canister-sized Bionicle sets to date at the time, which was absolutely fantastic for both playing with and photographing them in all kinds of poses, and I remember it was for sure exciting, on first seeing them and recognising the familiar names, to feel like "my little guys are all grown up...!".
I guess I just... after a bit, realised that I don't really see *Jaller* in him? It's something I find with all the Inika to a certain extent, that while they're very cool, they don't entirely feel like the same characters as their former Matoran selves who I had loved for so long. It's in the designs a bit, but also in their written portrayals; I've always been very attached to the way they were all portrayed in MNOG and the Bohrok animations, and by the time the books came around they didn't feel like they were quite the same characters anymore. I'm sure it just comes down to 'different writers, different perspectives', and their book portrayals certainly aren't bad; they just aren't quite the same as their online media portrayals either.
Even despite that, though, it was still great to see some old favourite characters get to take the spotlight! :D

Gremlins, at least, could actually happen…in 2035.

Were the Inika sets designed with the idea in mind that they were the same characters as those Matoran? I know story/set disconnects like that happened sometimes.

That's a good question. I get the impression that generally sets were designed first and then the story team had to figure out who they were and how they fit in afterwards, but I don't know if that's necessarily true in every instance or if it can be more collaborative between the set and story teams. I know that in the case of Pewku and the Gukko bird in 2003, the Mask of Light movie designs came first and the sets had to be designed to match them, but from what I gathered those were an exception to the normal.
I'd believe in this case that the sets were designed before being assigned to characters, for sure, since there's really no visual connect between the Inika and their Matoran selves.

The crab had already been introduced through the Mata Nui Online Game, but in a radically different, and much smaller form. But yeah, once a movie gets into the mix, things get more complicated. I read that with TLBM, the studio wanted Robin and Batgirl to have shiny capes, but TLG balked because shiny cloth is more expensive and difficult to work with. So they got shiny capes in the movie, and so did the minifigs.
