The face reminds me of the minifigs that had printed noses.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think the head was a bootleg brand’s.

If you think she looks bad, wait until you see Ron from the same wave...

Aww.. we were working up to a full protective suit minifigure.

I'm glad that they actually made a style guide for minifigure design shortly before the CMFs so that they could better identify what works and what doesn't for minifig faces.

What curse has she been hit with looking like that?

By in Canada,

Hmmm...keep the facial print, put the head in the right shade of green, add a piece to the top-of-head for 'pointiness' and voila...the Grinch:)

It's no wonder she doesn't have any friends!

Except for the redhead kid she keeps hanging around. I think she ended up marrying him.

This was around the same time we’d be getting Clone Wars sets and their…let’s say stylised faces. Not sure the experimenting really worked well in either case…

Red hair, vacant expression, there's no doubt who that is.

Gosh, I'm always horrified by the early HP minifigs... to think they were like this until 2007! I think the 2010 wave got it right; the newer minifigs (post-2018) are more detailed but are barely recognizable half the time. And I've yet to see a Hermione figure that actually looks like Hermione... it certainly ain't this one.

If you watch the original Years 1-4 trailer, in some scenes Ron has that old face. But Hermione actually stuck with this face, though its hard to tell because its animated and not permanently stuck in this grotesque countenance.

Pre-release designs are inconsistent throughout the trailer - sometimes the Hogwarts uniforms have black legs. In general years 1-4 character designs borrow parts from various previous minifigure iterations, resulting in an in-game design that never existed.

Good God!!
What abomination is that?!
Other than Ron and Hermione, the rest of the figs from that Hogwarts Castle set don’t look half bad.
Harry doesn’t have a weird face like his two friends!

Yep, the Ron’s worse.

It’s like they were trying to capture them mid cackle? It kind of suits Draco

Marrying someone doesn't mean you're friends. Pretty sure they argue all the time.

She probably figured she was good with a protection spell of some kind, and since she was a witch now, she didn't need any of the Muggle stuff.

Yeesh! That stink-eye and creep-smile…

Those years where they failed to honour the iconic charm of their classic MF eye and mouth design with catastrophic results.

By in Italy,

It's incredible how bad HP minifig faces where before circa 2018.
There are a lot of questionable head designs in 2000s-late 2010s, but HP is by far the worst offender (SW is second, but quite far). That's almost 20 years...

Me, a Weasley, in the girls dormitory with my wand out, with my reputation ... what were they thinking?

This head design debuted for the 2005 wave of The Goblet of Fire. There, in set 4762 Rescue from the Merpeople, this head was used as a double-sided head because the secondary expression has her sleeping (the same is true for Ron). https://brickset.com/minifigs/hp065/hermione-granger-gryffindor-stripe-torso-dark-bluish-gray-legs-sleeping-awake-face

I prefer that version due to the hair being more Hermione, although this princess hairstyle (created for the 2007 Fantasy Era princess) does suit the character's look in the 5th movie. That said... I just leave them in their asleep modes.

Most 2001-2005 minifigs from HP fared a lot better than these Hermione and Ron figs, especially when you consider they were based on preproduction material and some were more based on media based on the books from before the films came out. That style was retained out of consistency, which was certainly a choice I can respect. That said, the Order of the Phoenix Snape has no excuse for looking as cursed as he does. His face is properly Alan Rickman, but those printed-on hairs are not ideal. https://brickset.com/minifigs/hp082/professor-severus-snape-light-nougat-head

And today, the role of Ron Weasley will be played by beloved guest-actor and national treasure, Steve Buscemi. How do you do, fellow wizards?
