Technic McLaren F1 car revealed at LEGO.com
Posted by Huw,Lifestyle images recently added to the Speed Champions 77251 McLaren F1 Team MCL38 page at LEGO.com have revealed a hitherto unseen Technic version of the racing car.
They have presumably been added there inadvertently: given the similarity between the two models it would be easy for someone in the company to muddle them up when looking at thumbnails.
It appears to be built to the same scale as last year's 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 F1 Car and 42207 Ferrari SF-24 F1 Car and unfortunately it suffers from the same annoying problem that they do. We have no further details, but will of course let you know when we do.

Really? Again? Another F1 car?

my thoughts exactly!
God and I thought the RB was hard to get at my local store. I don't expect to see one anytime soon! This will definitely sell better than the previous ones here.
Oh look, another F1 car.
Oh look, another comment section filled with negativity.
Y’know, I am also not the market for (nearly any) (there are a couple of exceptions) F1 things, but I think it is fairly clear at this point that they sell well enough that acting shocked at another F1 kit is a bit like being shocked at another Star Wars kit. The subtheme (or megatheme?) is alive and well and crosses several different themes, there will continue to be more another-one’s until they stop selling or Lego stops having the license, neither of which is likely any time soon.
I do not think we need half a dozen or more comments on every F1 announcement where people complain about or express surprise that this clearly successful range continues to exist.

Could you let me know who's forcing you to buy them?
Rookie mistake. Heads will roll over in Billund.
It will be interesting to see how long it will take for them to realize they added the wrong photos and when they will remove them.

Well spotted. No flies on you.
Bloody Lego releasing sets they know will sell.
Somehow I manage to resist posting ‘oh look another flower’ every time they release another Botanical set, even though they don’t interest me. It’s not that difficult.

I agree with you about the complaining - but I can't resist making the point that the Star Wars comparison would be more apt if we had ever had a year where Lego released 6 Star Wars City sets, 10 Star Wars blind bags, 10 Star Wars Speed Champions, 2 Star Wars Technic sets and 3 Star Wars Icons sets and they were all just X-wings in very slightly different colours.
And then they made even more the next year.
I like the scale of these.
Oh look, it's last year's Constructor and Driver championship car. After last year's F1 bonanza it makes perfect sense they'd follow it up with the car that actually won the season! I'm looking forward to the review and I might actually get it if I can find a decent discount.
I think it looks the best of the four recent large sets, but having already got the previous McLaren it would have to be something very special inside to consider getting this version. It does look great though. Hopefully Williams or Aston Martin can do will this year to open up other manufacturers as options.
$230 is steep..
Where does the smart brick go...for the vroom vroom noises?
Actually looks nice.....but another car...meh.
The uncropped photos on lego.com are pretty neat.
I'm curious about the whole photo shoot. It appears to have been done at the McLaren HQ, and one of the photos is taken in a trophy cabinet full of life-size brick-built replicas of some of the team's trophies. Link below:
https://www.lego.com/cdn/cs/set/assets/blta63339a18037efa7/77251_Lifestyle_shoot_2.jpg
The trophies are really ornately detailed with gold and silver plated pieces, and printed plaques for the 2025 British Grand Prix. All three have little cars from the blind box series attached, also plated in gold and silver. Very cute!
It's hard to tell because the cars look so similar year-on-year, but I'd dare speculate that the Technic set is a model based on the 2025 car. Seems obvious given the timing of these photos, although they were accidentally uploaded into the product page for a 2024 car.

Let’s not forget this is a partnership extending much further than licensing. Just like space had a run as sub theme across multiple themes, F1 got the same treatment last year, and no one complained about space, did they? I’m not sure how long the F1 partnership is covered, but unlike space, LEGO makes serious bank on this. The space sub theme was nothing more than fan service, and I hate to say that, as a younger afol I also admire space sets.
I will repeat what I said in a previous post on another F1 reveal. Those who are concerned with the extent of this sub theme more likely than not fail to realize the massive impact the partnership has on LEGO sales, as they’re present at the worlds most global and watched racing series. It not only keeps current Lego and F1 fans hooked, but opens up for rediscovering the Lego brand as the F1 sets peak the interest of those who may not play with Lego anymore or never tried.
This is nothing but a win win situation for both us and Lego. As proven so far, the F1 sets don’t take up any ”slots”, and instead car/racing enthusiasts further gain interest in LEGO and may eventually dabble into other themes. That’s one step towards LEGO justifying the constant addition of new licenses and franchises to their portfolio. Maybe even ones you personally would like to see.
I consider myself a big fan of the Technic series.
So, I hope we will see another large non-F1 (or a licensed super sport) and non-app controlled set this year.
E.g. 42157 John Deere 948L-II Skidder from 2023!
Great car.

What sense does it make to release this now?
It's from the previous regulation set, it's outdated and looks completely different to what they'll be racing with this year.
At least the Red Bull and Ferrari were released when those rules were still in force,.

Until the 2026 season wraps up, this is the current number 1 WCC and WDC car.
Besides, the Ferrari and Red Bull were the 2024 cars released in 2025. This has been the case with every F1 car so far, as they are released when we don’t yet have the finalized design of each car of the specific year/season. Only exception to this has been Audi (and soon Cadillac I can imagine)

For a start the front and rear wheels and tyres should be different widths.

And all of them would have six wings instead of four not to resemble the real one (like the tiny wheels here).

It wasn’t supposed to, I agree with you, and people should like what they like and worry less about what others like. But as someone who is not familiar enough with F1 cars to appreciate the subtleties of the design, it looks an awful lot to me like the same set is being released over and over again. It may help to know I own pretty much every X-wing they’ve made, so I don’t judge anyone who is pleased by this.
@Brickmasterboy said:

I would say it's fair for people to be disappointed at the reveal of a third near-identical set in the theme that prides itself on having mechanically diverse building experiences
I don't understand how Lego can't get the wheels right. They mostly fixed it for the Speed Champions sets, but they won't even try for the substantially more expensive Technic sets. If the set costs this much, it should be perfect.

Honestly, if I was interested in buildable F1 cars of that size, I would at least want one of proper quality and good value for money. Something along these lines:

It was an RLFM, the pictures were taken at a presentation which you could tell by the unfinished elements and the similar background to Barad-Dur. More prominent RLFM representatives typically see upcoming flagship sets months or even a year prior.

I'm really not sure what else you guys expect out of an F1 license. And with TLG now sponsoring an F4 car, I don't think the license is going away anytime soon.

It's more about what we expect out of Technic. A long list of functionally identical cars is not what this theme should be.
Well, at least they didn't repeat one mistake they made with the 42141: Making a model of a car that hadn't been revealed. Granted, it probably helps this was the most dominant car of last season, winning both the driver and constructor title, so no need to gamble on the 2026 car design.
Wow! Another F1 car. Just like all others before....

I still don't get the concept of bringing people in to show them stuff they can't even talk about. They did this with the first iteration of the Ambassador Network, where everyone had to sign NDAs, and all that would happen is corporate would show them stuff nobody else was seeing, but never give them permission to actually reveal what they knew. It was more a clique than a network.

I can only assume that the main cause of whining on these announcements is that some people, who aren't interested in some particular new set, believe that a different set would have been released instead which they might have been more interested in. It's a very egocentric position to take, to think that the Lego release schedule should revolve specifically around your interests and no one else's...

It's like with their "booth" at the Nuremberg Toy Fair.
Whereas most companies go there to show their new products to everyone there who is interested, LEGO (and some others who think they are above the rest) hide their stuff behind closed walls with security guards at the entrance who only let in a select few who have been handpicked by LEGO.
Seriously, why do they even spend the time and money to go there when they only invite select members of the press and partners to show their new products? They could simply hold an event at Billund for these people because no one else is allowed anyway.
That kind of attitude is one of many reasons why I have lost interest in LEGO in favor of alternatives like Cobi, CaDa, Kiddicraft, Pantasy, Lumibricks or Mega/Mattel Brick Shop, to name but a few of the best.

@AustinPowers:
The primary purpose of all of these Toy Fair events is to get the product in front of corporate buyers who will then place massive orders for product going into the next year. Bringing media into the events is just a bonus. Everything bows to NYTF, so media has to deal with restrictions at the earlier EU events. At least at the German event, I think they're allowed to take pictures that they can post once NYTF starts, but allowing media into the UK event makes no sense. All they can do there is look at stuff and try to memorize the details, which is why @Huw has stopped attending in favor of getting a freelancer to cover NYTF.

What a waste of opportunities. Nobody supports mclaren, anyway...
Well I like it--I got into F1 last year (I completely blame Lego for this, those darn Speed Champions sucked me right in) and have a little collection of McLarens from the $5 "blind box", through the City scale, and the Speed Champions. I'm not sure this will ever make the budget, but I would love to add a fourth to the family. I have a friend who has the Red Bull and it's a very impressive model.

And it shows how awesome chrome pieces look versus the shitty look of flat silver or warm gold that LEGO gives consumers.
Yes, there's the age old argument of "but it doesn't hold up under harsh play conditions".
While that's true (at least for the type of play by kids who don't care about their sets), it wouldn't hurt on AFOL oriented 18+ sets that are made for display only anyway. But as always with LEGO these days, premium prices don't mean premium quality anymore.

Well if it was just one kind of flowers in different color every time.
I'm assuming each time they change the paneling they are just catering for different fan allegiances as likely the build for the chassis is very similar. So just trying to avoid favoritism towards one team, although the price will detour most people and unlikely to get smaller versions with all the speed Champion models out there.
