Which minifigs are most desirable?
Posted by Huw,
You may remember that last December we asked you to list your 'best LEGO sets ever' for a forthcoming Dorling Kindersley book. The book is taking somewhat longer than I expected to hit the shelves but as far as I know it's due for release sometime in 2015.
Now, another book is planned which will feature the 'most desirable minifigures in existence' and DK would like your help again. 'Desirability' could include a number of factors such as rarity, groundbreaking (first minifigure to include something, for example) or just minifigures that look really great or have something unique and interesting about them.
So, which minifigures would you most love to own and which are your favourites in your collection? Please reply to this message or leave a comment in the forum and let us know.
DK go on to ask "we'd also like to include some fun and interesting anecdotes from fans about minifigure collecting. Perhaps someone finally found their dream minifigure after many years of searching, or maybe someone used to own a rare minifigure but gave it away without realising how valuable it was? Please tell us your minifigure stories!"
I have already pointed them at this list of the 100 most valuable minifigs which should make a good starting point.

Somebody thought that the Azog minifigure belongs on the list

http://brickset.com/article/7161/history-in-the-making !
Scary... I've got 31 of the 100!
My most prized minifigure is my gold-chrome Threepio. I was made redundant from the NHS in 2013 and rather than dwell on being without a job, decided to celebrate my 15 years with the NHS by buying a minifigure I'd always wanted :-)
Glad he appears to be worth more than what I paid for him in 2013... LEGO is often a much better investment than a savings account!
Top of my 'desirables' list are the solid gold, silver and bronze Star Wars minifigures - completely out of my reach unless I win the lottery!
I have all of the variations of Boba Fett except for the Cloud City one - I will get him one day. One day :-D
I'd say Dengar is a very desirable minifigure. He's only included in one single set (UCS Super Star Destroyer), which is extremely expensive yet not particularly good. The Executor's exterior is bland and only appeared on screen briefly and its LEGO depiction doesn't include the interior, so the Dengar minifigure is almost the only reason to buy 10221. He's adequately detailed and recognisable.
I'm obviously not including the first version of Dengar from 6209, which was hopeless by today's standards.
Plastic man. Mr.gold. Gold C-3PO. Bouwsteen. Iron man toy fair. Captain america toy fair. Nexus astronaut. Red sox baseball player. Dareth. Gorilla suit guy. Panda suit guy. Piggy suit guy. Batman (electro suit). Batman (zur-en-arrh). Bard the bowman (armor). The collector. Cutesy kitty and Cheery kitty. Electro. Marsha queen of the mermaids. Deadpool. Shadow leonardo. Robo emmet. Vitruvius. Lord business. Good morning bilbo baggins. Martian manhunter. Jor-el
Hairy Fairy. Bar none.
For me it's my Charlie Crow from Fabuland I have had "since forever". Good memories...
http://brickset.com/sets/3634-1/Charlie-Crow-s-Carry-All
I would of course love to own Gold C3PO.
As for my collection, Jack Stone. I know, I know, what a horrible theme, but it was what got me first introduced to LEGO. I have since come to love the line and still have fond memories playing with it as a child. It was the first LEGO theme I really liked and Jack Stone became my hero. I must have at least 10 incarnations of him, but the standard blue one would be my favorite. He isn't that handsome, but it is what he represents that makes him amazing. I know this may be out of line if he really isn't considered a minifigures...
Currently, the favorite minifig I've got is the Classic Space statue from the SP3 Galactic Enforcer. Such an amazing tribute to classic space. Plus, in granite-statue form, it looks absolutely stunning.
The one I'd most like to have? Got to go with the top-hatted statue, with the old-style legs and arms, from 1592 Town Square. Retro stuff is so awesome. :-D
Lloyd Garmadon in his Green Ninja ZX variant robes from 2012 is my favorite minifigure. He also is potentially desirable to any Ninjago fan who doesn't own him, as he only appeared in two sets: in the expensive Epic Dragon Battle, and in his hard-to-find self-titled spinner set. It's too bad I stupidly gave it with my friend, then he moved away and never gave it back...
I'd like to have Mr. Gold, but there's really no chance there!
I'd have to say my favorite minifigure is Commander Cody. He only appears in two variations of the same Clone Turbo Tank. He's led every Republic assault in my collection, even after newer officers have joined my Clone Army.
The minifigure I've wanted most is probably Cassiopeia. I remember her from LEGO Racers 2, where she was the best competition.
I want this: http://brickset.com/sets/TLMPROFIG-1/The-LEGO-Movie-Promotional-Figure
Any SDCC exclusive or minifigure in limited quantities (3PO and Mr. Gold) are desirable and valuable. I've always liked both versions of the Dementor. Medusa is probably one of my other favorites. My new fave is the Spooky Girl, however. I also love the DC villains.
My best minifigure story was when I got a complete minifigure from two different yard sales. In one, I got the dress piece for the Fright Nights witch. I didn't have the rest of her, so I tossed it into my box of pieces and didn't think about it again. More than a year later, our church fair had a rummage sale section, where a box of LEGO was being sold, including old Castle, Space, and some Adventurers. Included was the witch's upper body- hat, head, cape, and torso. I was so excited and put her together completely when I got home.
The original Blacktron and Forestmen figs are probably some of my all time favorites. Really showed the possibilites of 'cool' figs.
I just remembered: The minifigure that brought me back was Meltrox from Power Miners. It was just so unique to me, and getting the Stone Chopper was what led me toward the LEGO community. I still have him, and value him pretty well because of it.
There are some figs that are rare and so very desirable. The Mr Gold, any of the Comi-con figs would be great. But the rarest ever, if I'm right, are some that were sent into space on a mission to Jupiter. I believe they are Jupiter, Juno and Galileo, those have to surely be the most sought after and are either still in orbit around Jupiter or have perished when the craft entered the atmosphere.
My own favourites are the two Ferrari ones I have of Schumacher and Barichello, but I hope I'm getting Iron Patriot for Christmas. I was once looking through a big box of figures and thought I had stumbled upon an Alfred from Batman one, I was really excited but when I got home and compared it to my book it turned out to be a fairly basic waiter.
For me, without question, the most desirable is the Red Sox Baseball player given out in the ballpark in the late '90s.
Classic policeman PLN106 (first true minifigure). Classic postman POST001 (first postman). KIng kahuka. Gypsy moth. Darth vader. Achu. Mime. Sensei wu. Classic blue spaceman. Beorn. Galadriel. Witch-king. Elrond (armor). Gollum. Cave-troll. Dain ironfoot. Thorin (king). Mouth 0f sauron. Creeper. Captain redbeard (first minifigure to have a face other than the classic smile). NASA astronaut. Female pirate. Santa yoda. Festive astromech. Festive darth maul. Dr.cyber (only minifigure with cross eyes). Tim (has a nose). Flatfoot thompson (also a nose). Blue dragon master. Basil the batlord. Infomaniac
My most valued minifigure is the SDCC Green Lantern, but my favorite is probably Superman or the green CS figs.
I think one of my favorite minifigures Lego ever created was Buzz Lightyear. He had the wings and the helmet, and it was a good scale. They did the color scheme perfectly too.
I did not include the Azog figure or the superman becuase they can be obtained for a few dollars in regular sets. It is really the Azog figure with the packaging that is rare.
^So the guy who paid $1650 for it...OUCH
....I'm not one for prototypes, but I've just watched an episode of The Yoda Chronicles with my son and noticed they have a pink Artoo unit in the show like the one in the Hot 100 list - will have to add that to my 'desirables' list now :-)
The 2005 Kashyyyk Trooper, it was spot on with its depiction on Episode III, sad that it was only one figure in a $90 set.
Before the marvel superheroes sets came out everyone wanted those prototypes so bad because they looked so amazing. I would say I've always wanted the kraang battle damaged and shadow leonardo but I could never afford them
Definitely the Mouth of Sauron. greatest minifig ever, I wasn't at all expecting him to be included in the set considering he only makes a short appearance in an extended scene, but he is one of the coolest Lord of the Rings characters and I am so glad they included him in the set. Favorite minifig of all time
My favorites are Umbridge, Mad Eye, Shark Krum, Fluffy, Luna, Sirius, Lupin, and the dungeon troll from the Harry Potter sets. I wish they'd make more!! I'm also enjoying collecting the master builders from the LEGO movie as well. Good times! And I agree, LEGOs are a good investment and I've never regretted a single purchase!
Favorites; swamp monster, blacktron, ice planet (Orange transparent chainsaws!), Indiana Jones, Uruk Hai, Saruman, but most of all, Achu and King Kahuka!
The rarest on the list I have are 50) Smaug and 53) Davy Jones
And minifig I most want: Admiral from lego racers!
I want a Mr gold please. Nice surprise when I got home a christmas card from lego !!! Think I am spending too much money at the lego store !!!
As a kid I remember desperately wanting Captain Red Beard from the Black Seas Barracuda (6285). Everything about him had me excited; the printed beard and eye patch, the peg leg, the hook for a hand, the pirate hat, and the epaulette. All very new and exciting.
I think I only have one of that top 100 minifigures and it's the Nesquik bunny!
Favourite minifigure ever? Classic spaceman, no question. I must have imagined myself in his place a thousand times as his little buggy rumbled over the inhospitable surface of Planet Carpet...
I have three sets of favourites (if one is allowed to have that many!).
First were the red and white spacemen that came out in 1979 when I was a kid. At the time, I had the so-called "slabby", static figures. It's difficult to express how great I found the articulated ones with their poseable arms and legs and printed faces. As far as I was concerned, they were magic made real. I was blown away!
Second were the wizard (later dubbed Majisto by LEGO) from set 6020 Magic Shop that came out in 1993, as well as the glow-in-the-dark ghost and knight from set 6034 Black Monarch's Ghost released in 1990. It was these three minifigures that drew me out of my Dark Ages (the period in one's life usually in one's teens when one loses interest in LEGO). I couldn't resist the lure of fantasy-themed minifigures. I thought - and still think - the Castle minifigure parts were cool.
Third was the elf from the Series 3 Collectible Minifigures (CMFs) released in 2011. I had wished and waited since 1993 - 18 years - for LEGO to release an elf and when they finally did, it was magnificent. Seeing the first images of that minifigure filled me with the same joy I had experienced as a child.
My single most valuable minifigure is probably my red wizard (picture left http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/AmperZand/Fantasy/wizards_witch_and_druid.jpg ) because the red wizard's hat, while being 100% genuine LEGO, was never released in a set. Compared to many other minifigures though, I realise that it isn't worth that much.
I agree with lego613master that the classic spaceman statue is a really really cool minifigure. My personal fave is TC-14. After wanting a chrome C-3PO for so long, it was great to finally have a chrome protocol droid. Plus it means I no longer lust after the old chrome 3PO as surely it's only a matter of time before Lego gives us a new one - complete with all those awesome colorful tummy wires that look so great on TC-14. I would buy ANY set at any price if it came with an updated chrome C-3PO.
Isn't it strange how the words 'favourite' and 'desirable' mean different things but are intrinsically linked?!
I took the headline as desirable due to rarity but there's lots of mention of favourites that are less rare than those in the Hot 100.
My all-time favourites are red and white Classic Space and the humble Stormtrooper and Darth Vader that were pretty much spot on from inception and haven't changed much since
The prices for the mini figs look like they were chosen at random. $2 billion and 1? seriously? While, yes it is cool to have an idea of what the most expensive minifigs are, this list is utterly worthless. Many of the minifigures from actual sets can be pieced together and are nowhere near that much. $250~ for the cloud city boba? The highest I've ever seen it was $120, and most I've seen were $60-70 USD. I know for a fact that the cloud city luke skywalker is not $134, and if it is, the buyer and seller both have no concept of value. There was an advent calendar set a few years back that had his cloths in it. surely the head is not $130+
I'm assuming the price is in USD since if it were in Euros, the would be even more over priced. The list also does not contain (to my knowledge) a way to filter out all of the exclusives and "only 2 in existence!" figs.
The prices are based on what people including myself are paying for new figures on Bricklink, ebay and amazon. I have never seen cloud city boba fett under 200 new anymore. I remember seeing them at 80 back in 2006. I also base the figures on the set prices if no one is selling individual figures. I try to only use sold numbers.
I will check on the Luke. If his exact outfit exists in an advent calendar, that would probably change things.
As for the 2.1 billion. That is kind of a funny since I figured that is about what it would cost the government to fund a trip to Jupiter to retrieve the figures that Nasa put on the spaceship. :)
If you see any other figure prices that look out of whack, let me know and i will check them right away.
A few of the really exclusive figures like the ones that they made only two of, I am basing on what collectors would most likely pay for those if anyone would sell them. I think that the Gold C-3p0 may be under priced at $7500 since it it worth about 2-3K just in Gold.
I have at least one of every single Star Wars minifigure to date.
Despite owning the chrome gold C-3PO (sw158) and printed Boba Fett (sw107), I think my favourite minifig is Kit Fisto (sw163). The reason for this is that he was the first Star Wars minifig, I believe, to have a specially moulded rubber head. And even after seven years, he still looks so cool !!
I cannot say that I desire any minifigs because I have all the ones I want. There are many I would like to see in Lego form though.
@mr_skinny
I believe that you purchased your chrome C-3PO from me. Our transaction included two of each of several polybag minifigs. One opened and one sealed, of each.
@kipper147 - Although I agree that the pricing on a couple of the minifigures you mentioned is a little exaggerated, you would be unlikely to find a Cloud City Boba Fett for much less than the $254 quoted.
Luke's legs and torso have not appeared in any sets other than Cloud City, although once more I agree that $134 is a little more than one would usually expect to pay.
The list is certainly of value therefore as although the pricing seems skewed in places, the Bricklink going rates are probably fairly close to the figures given. In terms of ordering I think the list has it just about spot on.
My favorite mini-figure is King Theoden; every piece of him is a work of art. A close second is Achu ADV001. Others I like are Haldir, and Darth Maul - Printed Red Arms SW384. My favorite figure that is somewhat rare is the cas131a: Forestman - Black, Green Hat, Black Feather, D-Basket (Set 6066).
I have many of the mini-figures on the list that are not exclusive like Davy Jones, Angelica, Darth Malgus, and Darth Revan, which are very nice mini-figures.
However, for the top one hundred list; it reeks of this idea of artificial scarcity. A mini-figure is expensive because only a few have been produced. I would rather have Boba Fett SW396 from set 9496 and the money than a gold Boba Fett. I do not collect super heroes so the exclusives do not concern me, but none of them are as nice a mini-figure as I have listed above, but they are nice and I see why they are on the list.
That list of top 100 has a lot of figures I would not buy at any price, and I would think are losing value. All the old star wars unprinted macro-figures like Jabba, Dewback, or mini-figures like Watto, and even the old Grevious look like unfinished prototypes of their new versions. Professor Lupin with his unprinted werewolf head has the same problem.
Some other figures on there are strangely expensive, like the Dwarf Spider Droid from Set 7258 can be made from parts for next to nothing.
The one mini-figure on the list I want is The Collector, and I will get him when he comes out in a set in 2015.
If they released a white version of the UCS Slave 1 Boba that would be awesome.
Most individually valuable Minifigure I have is a chrome stormtrooper, but my favourite is either Jango or Iron Man. Most of my favourites have helmets/hoods/masks. Would love to get the Batman and Joker from the Tumbler, and a gold threepio!
i saw in the list a princess leia with smooth hair from tantive IV. I have one with the same hair piece, but from the x wing from 2006. is she rare?
That spider Droid slipped by me. Thanks for pointing that out.
I would love a gold Threepio, but I also think that R2-R7 is a fairly desirable figure. His dome and body are unique, and the set he came in was limited edition. Quirrel is another. He was the first ever double-head figure, and only came in one set. Combine that with the rare purple pieces that make him up, and he is a pretty desirable figure. My most prized figures include the Toy Soldier collectable minifig from the CMF encyclopedia, Electro Batman, and Yule Ball Harry Potter.
My Favourite of my whole Collection is Oola from Star Wars. I think her bright Green colour makes her stand out on my display.
Favourite of the rare ones is the SDCC Phoenix figure.
Favourite classic figure has always been the good old Falcon Knight, I aim to one day have an army of hundreds of those.
Looking at the website, I'd have to say I want the figures that were on the space shuttle that went to Jupiter, Jupiter, Juno, and Galileo. They're awesome looking just being plain white, and even cooler that they WENT TO JUPITER. If that isn't a good enough reason, then I don't know what is.
@The Sly Fox my Threepio was a fleaBay purchase with one each of sealed Chrome Vader, White Boba, Silver Stormie, Black ARF Trooper and shirtless Maul. I already had the latter six polybags and sold them privately for nearly as much I had paid for all seven minifigs... so turned out to be a sweet deal for me
@mr_skinny
Yeah that's right buddy, I remember the deal now. I knew I had seen your name somewhere else. I'll check and see if I have a spare CC BF for you if you like.
Desirable minifigures for me would be the new Star Wars VII characters. But it is pretty much inevitable that they will be released soon enough :-)
Some desirable characters for me would be:
Mr. Gold, Thorin (king version), Gold C-3PO, Mouth of Sauron, and Smaug (does he count?).
First figure to have a double-printed head: Professor Quirrell from the first wave of Harry Potter sets.
I think some of the most important ones are The original pirates for the hooks and peg legs, Jar-Jar for first modified head, Professor Quirrel for first double sided head, and the original Ghost.
My personal favorites are the space police 3 aliens, the Mars Mission Alien Commander, and the nexus force astronaut.
I like the Exo-force Hitomi mini-figure, the Alien Commander from 7065: Alien Mothership, and the Alien Villainess from the collectible mini-figures that matches him. Space Police 3 Alien - Brick Daddy
SP114.
Speaking of the CMF, there are many great mini-figures, which are in many ways better than most Star Wars or super hero mini-figures. Overall many of the Star Wars are very plain that are on the list.
Some of my favourites:
Pharaoh's Quest Anubis Guards
Sandtroopers (2012 on)
Boba Fett (2010 on)
Joker in Prison Orange
Haldir
Oola
Poggle the Lesser
Dooku/Saruman (Christopher Lee versions)
Zombie Bride
My most favorite minifig is definitely Queen Amidala from 9499 , the 2012 Gungan Sub set. To my mind she takes the minifigure to the level of an art form.
Cheerie Kitty and Cutesy Kitty are also both wonderful--the only SDCC figures I've bought or am likely to buy--but I like all the Unikitty variants, so I had to complete *that* collection.
I ought to want the Red Sox player minifigure, as I'm a diehard Red Sox fan, but it really doesn't move me, for some reason!
Many of the expensive minifigs can be assembled for much more reasonable prices if you're patient and buy them piece by piece. Since I didn't come out of my Dark Ages until after the Harry Potter theme was almost over, that's how I've been able to collect a few of my favorite characters from the books--most of the sets, and many of the complete figures, are well out of my normal price range!
Lego "zombie" from collection serie n. 1 !
The first zombie, unique and desiderable!
I would buy A LOT of books to have it in multiple copies!
Tell it, to your friends in DK... ;)
@The Sly Fox I'm mr_skinny on a lot of sites - my fave of the Mr Men!
I'd be interested in CCBF but I was also hoping to buy a Cloud City set at some point - killing four birds with one stone: Luke, Leia, Lando and Boba :-)
I removed the spider droid and I added in castle. I had been limiting this list to the more license type themes, but alot of people have been asking for castle. Thanks!
Wow, I own 51 from that list of 200! Unfortunately, Alfred sells for a lot less than that on Bricklink. Those prices aren't too accurate.
I think the most desired minifigure is the solid gold C-3P0, because unlike any other minifigures, it is made of non-plastic, extremely rare, has a high value and transcend a commonly prestigious material into a children's based toy line to create an exclusive.
probably my Angelica or momo or genral grevis.....maybe Blackbeard and Azog? oh but I have like 8 on that list.i have 200;) minifigs.
The 2002 Jango Fett and Jawas would both be desirable, if only for their rarity.
I'd have to say Iron Patriot.
As a kid I owned allot of the adventure sets, Johnny Thunder although common (I have 6) is my favourite mini figure. He has such a memorable face and is the only non movie based character that I knew the actual name for as a kid. Johnny's adventures have also taken him around the world seeing mummies in Egypt, dinosaurs in the jungle and even appearing in a Lego movie set. My other favourite figure is the original Ja-Ja Binks mini figure, don't know why but I really like it.
After reading about the part in this article that says: "maybe someone used to own a rare minifigure but gave it away without realising how valuable it was?", I was prompted to share this story.
Several years ago, I made a trade with my friend for his original 2005 General Grievous minifigure. At the time I heard that it was selling for about $50. However, I didn't want to sell it because I would rather play with it. One fateful day I brought it to school. Big mistake. My fifth grade teacher used her toy finding x-ray eyes to see my minifigure in my desk. After she confiscated it, the only time I ever saw it again was in some folder where she probably keeps her other plundered valuable minifigures :P
Favorite ones I have are, Darth Revan, Darth Malgus, Deadpool, chrome darth vader, The Emperor Palpatine from the dark side book, Batgirl, Episode 3 clone(2014)
My brother is collecting Super Heroes minifigures, doens't matter whether they are DC or Marvel. He owns one Comic Con exclusive which he loves to death. A friend of ours was lucky to get the Comic Con Green Latern for a really good price last year and my brother has been trying to buy it from him for over a year now. No luck - at least that's what he thinks! I told our friend that in case he ever wants to sell it, he should speak to me and not to my brother. And so he did about 1 month ago. In about 2 weeks is my brother's birthday and I can't wait for his reaction! He wouldn't expect me to buy a minifigure for 100€+ ever!
My best figures are number 98, 3 headed wolf from harry potter, worth 30$. My next best is my 1998 aquazone hydronaut figure.
I will look at the Alfred and the Nightwing price. I noticed that Alfred, Nightwinfg and Bane have been getting more reasonable. I am still seeing a new Alfred at about 80$.
I have to say Johnny Thunder, because not only is he the original adventure hero of lego, but also has shown up a few time s after adventure orient like when all of the pharaoh's quest characters have storm related names based off of him, or when his descendent, Josh Thunder shows up in the Dino theme in the set 5887 Dino Defense HQ, or even when he is include in the super secret police drop ship lego movie set, one of the lego movie posters, and cameos in the lego movie for a few seconds when running from a chunk of land. I personally own 2 of the 3 variants, being the first two, which had plain black eyes first, and the second one simply has a part of the eye not covered in paint for eye shine.
I Have A Classic spaceman- The white one -Which is one of the prized Minifigs of my collection.
I got a hold of a Spider-Man with Balaclava Face minifig ($42 according to that list) last year in a random lot from eBay. I mistakenly thought that the torso was old and faded so I threw it away! I now know better and keep all my old damaged minifig parts just in case!
To me, the most desirable minifigs are the Space-themed minifigs. I have the Classic Space in white, red, yellow, blue, and black (all 5 left over from my childhood, with spares for my son to display), and many of the others (Blacktron, Unitron, Insectoids, Space Police I/II/III, etc.), but I'm not going exactly by the list on Brickset (I'm excluding the brick-built figures, and including others like the LEGO Universe Nexus Astronaut and the space-themed microfigs). The two I'm pursuing now are Biff Starling and Sandy Moondust.
@sklamb - I do agree with you that the Queen Amidala minifig from the Gungan Sub set is really amazing. I'd love to have one of those (Santa, are you listening? I've been really good this year!).
I also agree with @lego613master and @Brainslugged about the Space Police 3 Classic Space Statue being very cool.
Not to forget: Professor Umbridge from the Harry Potter series.. the mininfig is well done and appeared in only one (expensive) set, that now has grown to a quite unaffordable prize!
Most desirable has got to be at least a chrome C3P0 if not solid gold as a favourite Star Wars character along with
Favourites in my collection would be, among many:
CMFs; Royal Guard, Artist, Space Hero.
LOTR Boromir.
Ultimately is the classic chef/ baker in grey trousers (inc. my original town people boxed set just for sheer nostalgia),the old Castle Lion Knight in blue and red and the sheer simplicity of the old spacemen and specifically the white chap.
I only have 4 of the 100, one of which is Nightwing. Only $64, though.
