Review: 76036 Carnage's SHIELD Sky Attack
Posted by CapnRex101,
This Summer sees the release of three Marvel Super Heroes sets, two of which are based on Spider-Man. The smallest of the three is 76036 Carnage's SHIELD Sky Attack which contains 97 pieces and is priced at £11.99 in the UK or $12.99 in the US.
Smaller licensed sets are typically devoted to the minifigures, but few contain a selection as impressive as this one. All three minifigures have huge appeal and are exclusive to this set, so I am sure most Marvel fans will buy the set for the figures alone. However, the SHIELD vehicle is also pretty good considering the limited piece count, with a nice variety of dark blue, flame yellowish orange and grey parts which could be very useful for your own creations.
Box and Contents
The box is small and square, showing the SHIELD craft under attack from Carnage while Miles Morales' Spider-Man leaps into action to stop the villain. The vehicle is shown in landing mode on the back and panels show off the stud-shooters and Super Jumper which are included.
Inside are two bags, a single folded instruction booklet and a tiny sticker sheet with just two stickers. The upcoming Avengers video game is advertised at the back of the instruction manual but no release date is given.
Minifigures
The minifigures are certainly the highlight of the set and they are all excellent. This is Miles Morales' first appearance as Spider-Man in a LEGO set but it has been worth the wait as this is a superb figure. The level of detail is impressive on the head and torso, closely resembling the design seen in both the Ultimate Comics and the Ultimate Spider-Man television show.
This set also marks the debut of a generic SHIELD Agent minifigure, which I will certainly want a few more of for my collection. The minifigure design is not particularly complicated, with a simple black helmet, double sided head and nicely printed torso, but it is certainly detailed enough to look respectable beside the other figures in the set. He is armed with a pair of a handcuffs and a gun which can be clipped to the vehicle for storage while he is otherwise occupied by piloting the craft.
The final minifigure in this set is Carnage. This villain first appeared in 1991 as one of Spider-Man's most brutal enemies, but the character was revised for his appearance in the Ultimate Spider-Man show, in which he is a modified version of the Venom Symbiote created by Green Goblin. This minifigure is brilliantly detailed on the head, torso, arms and legs, with twisted black streaks covering his entire body.
Like Venom from 76004 Spider-Man: Spider-Cycle Chase Bionicle spine elements are attached to his back to represent his Symbiote tendrils and he has another one to hold. I am always delighted to see new Super Heroes characters added to the roster from both Marvel and DC, but this is one of my instant favourites as I love the character and the minifigure is even better!
The Completed Model
As a small set I was not expecting very much from the model itself, but it is actually quite a nice little craft. There are two stud-shooters and some floodlights at the front, with additional ammunition for the guns stored in a compartment behind the pilot. In the cockpit there are two control levers and a HUD sticker is applied to the canopy which looks great.
The craft is constructed in two halves, with click hinges connecting the cockpit to the engine section. The front of the craft can therefore be angled downwards for flight or return to the horizontal position for landing. This feature looks great, particularly since the turbines on either side are also angled downwards. Please note that the trans clear brick used to support it in the photos below is not included.
I was very happy to find that the 2x2 tiles with pin hole are printed with the turbine design you can see. We will presumably see these pieces appear in other sets as they could be very useful for adding some detail to models.
The back of the craft includes clips for the gun and handcuffs as well as a small thruster. My only complaint about the SHIELD mini jet is that both this thruster and those beneath the turbines are not attached very securely. They definitely won't fall off but the grey Technic pins do not hold them as firmly as I would like, which is a bit unfortunate in my opinion, but certainly isn't a major issue.
Overall
At such a low price this is a must have set for even the most casual Super Heroes fan. All three minifigures are fantastic and the model is almost faultless as well, even including some very useful new printed pieces.
I would love to see the release of more sets like this one which contain new minifigures and a nice model at a relatively low price point. Super Heroes is a theme driven by minifigures, so hopefully LEGO will continue to take advantage of this. However, for now 76036 is, in many ways, the perfect Super Heroes set.

Thanks for the review, i agree, this set is basically flawless. Perfect value for that pricepoint, awesome minifigs, and the flyer is actually really decent. I might even buy multiples for the shield agent.
When is this et for release? Same as 76039 (Ant-Man)? This is a great set, and I cannit wait to get my hands on it. Well done, Captain,
Nice!
Indeed, I see why many people might want to pick up multiples of this set for the shield agent, who also has very nice double face print. Spidey and Carnage look very good too, and so does the little vehicle.
Thanks for the review!
Thanks a lot for the review, Capn! I was going to hold back on this set, but yet again, a wonderful Brickset Review has made me start thinking about a purchase. :)
Apologies for not being up to date with the SH lines, but is was Carnage later turned into Venom? The resemblance between the two is unavoidably noticeable. :-\
Thanks for this review!
Really annoyed, saw a load of new sets today and this was just about the only one they didn't have, would have picked it up if they had.
@Shib: Which ones were they? No sightings of Summer Sets in the UK have been reported so far.
Yay! I can use those turbine pieces for my mini Helicarrier but that means I need two sets :/
Thanks for the review. Agree with everyone else, this looks like a can't-miss set. The SHIELD theme is a great one in the sense that the vehicles make sense.
I'll definitely be getting at least two of these, probably three. Nice to see that TLG fit these unique characters into a set at this price point.
Picked this up today at Smyths, plus they had the new Ninjago and JW sets - it's going to get expensive!
After this review I will be aiming for this and the Ant-Man set.
BEST. THIRTEEN-DOLLAR. SET. EVER.
And another instance of minifig inconsistency... Spidey looks terribly boring, and Carnage is covered with bits of red and black all over.
For £12 you can't have any complaints here. This and the Ant Man set almost make up for the Sandman/Rhino set.
Is this due to be released June 1st in the U.S.? If so, I'm gonna try to pick up this one, Ant-Man's Final Battle, and the Rhino and Sandman one :D
I thought this wasn't supposed to be out until August along with the Sandman and Rhino set? If that changed then I'm even more excited to get this!
Yeah, I'll be buying this one. Thanks for the review :).
I love these $12.99 Super Heroes sets. The minifigure selection is always incredibly good value (it's hard not to have three Marvel/DC related figs that aren't good value); great for display and MOCing.
Carnage looks epic.
They've nailed Miles Morales, the lack of leg printing actually works for this figure if you look at the comics.
His boots are the same as his costume pure black. Carnage looks epic, so that'll be cool to have and the shield agent is nice, also nice to see the ADU pistol in black for him, they could do with releasing that in black in more marvel sets as it is far more slick and accurate than the bland grey ones.
Excellent mini figures and a great looking craft. Hard to say no to this one, even for someone who's not a huge Super Heroes fan.
I love the Marvel Super Heroes line, and I am extremely excited for the summer line. One question or complaint I have about this set is about my favorite part - Miles Morales. The three mini figures look great, yet I was very disappointed to see there were no white web pieces for Spider Man. These were a favorite of mine with the 2013 Spider-Man: Spider-Cycle Chase set. Anyway, I will still buy this set but the lack of this element will sting.
