Bricks Issue 2 out now

Posted by ,

I've just received my copy of Bricks magazine issue 2 and those of you that subscribe should be receiving yours soon, too.

Once again Mark has pushed the boundaries and produced an excellent publication. Yes, there are a couple of reviews that arguably you could read on the Internet but the vast majority of the content, written by highly talented and respected AFOLs (and me), you won't find elsewhere.

If you haven't subscribed yet you can do so at the magazine website.

Have your copy? Let us know what you think in the comments.

You'll find some sample spreads after the break.

Following your last forum post, I did subscribe to Bricks and also to Brick culture. I certainly do not regret my choice. There is so much content that I have not yet gone through the whole publications. The whole magazine is high quality both in its content and its paper quality.

Needless to say that I am eager to read this issue that I received yesterday.

That being said, I have never read Blocks, so I cannot really compare.

Are you saying you're not a highly talented and respected AFOL, Huw? :P

By in Germany,

This reminds me that I need to follow up with the 'botched' electronic version. After them telling me access doesn't work and me confirming I want the print instead I've never heard back...

subscribed to both (blocks 1 year, bricks 6 months) - both will run out around the same time and i'll make the decision then what i want to do... got the first issue of culture too, but not sure my wallet will stretch to that ongoing as well!

"the vast majority of the content, written by highly talented and respected AFOLs (and me), you won't find elsewhere."

I think this is a bit disingenuous. Are you suggesting that content wouldn't ever have been put online by the various bloggers (including you) had you not been signed up to Bricks.

@ aleydita.
Most likely not. In my case, my article was specially-written for Bricks. The content in it wouldn't have been put anywhere else.

Can you buy Bricks in any physical stores or is it online / subscription only? I can't see any information about non-online availability anywhere...

By in Australia,

Kfr I had exactly the same problem!

By in Canada,

Any word when I can buy digital copies.

@aleydita, yes I think I am. The main article I contributed this month, about my storage system, would not be something I'd write about here.

I'm not holding anything back from Brickset to include in Bricks, if that's what your implying.

"those of you that subscribe should be receiving yours soon, too" sounds quite cynical to those who still did not receive the 1st issue :(

By in Austria,

Very interesting to hear that the second issue is already out, I am still waiting for the first one that I have paid on March 21st together with an issue of Bricks Culture.
Very good start with that magazine for me.

By in United States,

This is only the 2nd month? I thought they were in their 9th month or so.

By in United States,

Anyone know how a good ol' American like me can get an issue of either of these? I found the online edition of Blocks in dollars, but I can't seem to find the same for Bricks/Bricks Culture.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, I would really like to get that magazine now. How much is a one-year subscription? :/

EDIT: Went to the website. 55 pounds sterling for a year? This must be pretty high-guality stuff. Also, the subscription might be more valuable if it was a bit cheaper, because it would be only marginally more expensive to buy 12 issues individually, and then you can pick and choose what you get and when you get it.

Is this available in America to order online?

@ PicnicBasketSam.
I'm not quite sure what you mean, but international shipping to the US is available.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

@copperwonder96 - you are thinking of Blocks, this is a new magazine started up by editors and contributors who abandoned Blocks a few months ago

By in United Kingdom,

In what way has this magazine "pushed the boundaries"?

By in United Kingdom,

Received my month 2 and I've gotta say I'm impressed with this magazine... High quality and I've still not read all the contents quite yet!! Love the front cover and the reviews inside are very detailed. Your comment Huw about some content already being on the net is somewhat true however this is the case for all magazines on the shelves now having to compete with the internet and great sites like Brickset.. Some of us just like to hold the magazine in our hands.. Great job so far Bricks!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Still have never seen these on a store shelf in the US.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would love to get these magazines in digital format, please let us know when and where we can.

By in United States,

I was pretty excited about this magazine, ordered both Bricks and Bricks Culture first issues in March using paypal since the site is completely insecure and I didn't want my credit card info transmitted that way. I even agreed to review them here on Brickset when Huw asked for reviewers. Like many others here from the USA, I never received the printed magazine, nor an explanation as to where it was, what the delay was, or acknowledgement of emails asking what's up. I had to file a paypal claim for each publication which also went unresponded to so Paypal eventually reversed the charges which cost me money due to the diminished foreign currency exchange rates. I was given access to the unusable and incomplete digital version of each and liked a lot of what I was able to see content-wise, but the technology promised has yet to surface, the customer service is abysmal at best (nonexistent apparently), and so I cannot and do not recommend this for anyone based on my experience as an early subscriber and paying customer.

I took a bit of a break from lego between Feb and May and now that I'm picking things up again it looks like support here for Blocks has gone and there is now Bricks too? I took out a 2 year subscription to Blocks last year so won't be buying Bricks too. But why all of a sudden has everyone left Blocks and started up a new magazine? Is there a thread somewhere I can catchup on things? Is Blocks done for? Is Bricks better? Can/should I switch?

By in Singapore,

Looks like I'm not the only one that have yet to receive issue number 1.

I really really wanted to know what's the hold up, that I've paid for the magazine back in Mar and yet now 5 Jun I still see nothing of it.

By in United States,

Not the new magazines but for those in the U.S. I have found both Brick Journal and Blocks Magazine at Barnes And Nobel.

Jurassic World, overpriced or not? The Debate rages on!

@ Sammael: Wow, you're spot on, That isn't for the faint of heart. Never understood the whole "Blocks vs Bricks" issue until I read through that. It certainly raises a ton of questions.

I've always felt like the Lego Community on here and in general, was actually a collective bunch of good people (and I still believe that) but recently there seems to be more animosity and I feel a little spurned by it.

I've been "playing" and building with Lego for 20 years now but recent events leave me with a "meh" feeling.

By in United Kingdom,

@Matt Z. I also collect Transformers and the fandom has become so completely toxic in recent years that it was putting me off the hobby altogether, which is a shame as I've been collecting them for 30 years. Just concentrate on the positives and try not to let the negatives grind you down. :)

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

Whenever people are passionate about something, there's bound to be conflict.

And the TF community has been toxic since its inception in the 1990s. (See "Trukk vs Munky" and "ruined forever") ;)

What happend to free shipping to uk. 4.99 + 1.49 postage when its the only Way to buy

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@omnius: Thanks for your comment. You're correct; I just need to focus on the positives. I think one of the issues I have is that in my region, there isn't an adult lego community, or any sort of community, at all. None. Zero. Zip. I've had to live vicariously through many people on this site and others, watching event after event pass by, and never getting to experience one for myself. So when I hear the negatives, it sucks.

So people should consider themselves very fortunate that they attend brick conventions and.or members of LUG's! And also focus on the positives of the community

"I exchanged e-mails with Mark Guest yesterday about the various reports here and on the main site from people who hadn't yet received Issue 1. He was under the impression that they had dealt with all the enquiries received thus far, and advised people still waiting for copies of Bricks or Bricks Culture to contact the team at angela.devine[at]bricksmag.com and they'll look into it."

Gravatar
By in France,

@Huw: That's correct. Although my experience is quite negative up to now (subscription to Bricks on April 3, still did not receive issue 1...), I have to say that I had a very quick reply from Angela when I contacted the team on April 30. She told me that they were dealing with my order. Still did not receive anything, but I'm an optimistic guy.

By in United Kingdom,

...and we're still waiting for news of the deal to allow Bolocks subscribers to get Bricks magazine at a 'special' rate?
It has been promised for a while but still no news of it.
I guess if they dilly-dally any longer the 1-year Blocks subscription will have run out and we'll have been led a merry dance!
I can't even cancel Blocks and get a refund - nor can I switch my subscription to Bricks since nothing yet has been offered.
I can only blame myself for listening to the hype that was posted here on Brickset about the Blocks launch...

By in Ireland,

I never received my hard copies through normal channels. I had to contact the customer services people who eventually dispatched Bricks and Bricks Culture - I think from a separate stock. The magazine was surprisingly good and printed on high quality paper so I've decided to take the plunge and order Issue 2 also. Hope they get the international shipping sorted though or I'll be onto the customer services people again.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, I received my digital copy, but never my physical copies. Paid for a 1 year subscription to both.... I'll put in a complaint with them.

By in Netherlands,

So I wanted to check out the magazine, but the website mentioned in the above article is offline.
Looks like their will be no magazine for me :(
