Nexo Knights marketing campaign revealed
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has set out its marketing plans for Nexo Knights to retailers this week in a two-page advert in UK toy trade publications, including Toy News.
It doesn't reveal a lot we don't already know, but here are the main points:
- Nexo Knights 'animated comedy adventure' to launch on Cartoon Network late December, then continuing throughout 2016.
- App to be downloadable from late December.
- 'Ultimate' sets packaged in a Bionicle-like cardboard pouch.
- The shields can be scanned by the app to 'power up'.
- Sets launch January 2016.
Are you excited for this theme?

Aha! So that was the deal with these different shields. I wonder if those book-pieces can be scanned too.
Exciting!
I'm still curious. Can't say I'm excited. And I don't really care about the app. But then I suspect I'm not part of the target group anyway.
@ChicoCheco - Yes; there was something that said there would be Shields on the sets, in the books, in the tv series, and possibly other media - all of which can be scanned into the app for power-ups.
I'm really looking forward to the sets - probably half of this wave, and all 3 of the second wave for which there are images in the database - hopefully there will be more previews of wave 2 from the various Jan/Feb Toy Fairs.
Gimmicky and a doubtful success, unless it becomes, the next "craze".
Are kids into scanning stuff into a computer game anymore? Or is that just a Skylanders thing which is passe?
Does it tie in with the Dimensions game? or is it a phone game?
I know that I am definitely not the target audience for this......
I sense a disturbance in the force: there's two times "ultimate macy" in the character sets. The second should be "ultimate beast master"

I am excited, but am curious to see how long this theme will last.
^Yeah. :/ They're really hyping this up, so if it's bad, there's going to be a major uproar,,,
The sets are nowhere near as cool and instantly appealing as the ones from Ninjago or Chima. Not even the kids around me find them interesting, they rather want more Ninjago. I will buy these only on heavy discount for parts. I cannot see this becoming the next craze, with Dimensions already being the digital plaything to get.
I love the trans-orange elements! The Ultimate figures look great for parts, too.
I'm certainly intrigued by these guys. I might grab the ultimate character sets, 'cause I love the characters, but don't really wanna get the massive sets.
It's just annoying that Lego never seem to bring their apps out on Windows, so I can't play along.
This is the Nexo Knights added play function, similar to the Ninjago spinners and the Chima racers. I'm not sure how long the scanning gimmic will last either. They tried the same thing with the Fusion sets and that didn't go very well. LEGO (or the app maker) updated the apps once, maybe twice and the functionality was tempermental and frustrating. Maybe the shields will be easier to read/scan. Another problem might be whether you only have to scan the shields once or each time you want to use a particular power up, like Dimensions, which could be cumbersome to keep the shields with you for mobility. I'm doubtful because LEGO doesn't seem committed to long term with games and apps...Universe = dead, Minifigures Online = dying, Dimensions = I'm hopeful. The games that do well for them are the one burst out of the gate ones, not the stretch ones (mostly from Tt). In the end I don't think the shields will make or break the sell of these sets.
I really wish TLG would stop blowing their profits on this kind of thing.
But I also see their need to develop new concepts into winning themes.
Maybe they would do better if they concentrated on Duplo, Junior, Star Wars, Ninjago, Friends, Castle, Disney Princess or General Disney, City, Ideas, Creator, and Expert. With one new theme tried every three years? Time for Dr Who now then next year Return to Lord of the Rings with proper battle packs for army building.
Okay I guess LOTR might be a hard one if TLG lost the licence? but returning to the theme every three years with new Army packs might work? Once a LOTR fan always a LOTR fan.
This is gonna be the worst theme ever... (after 4+ jackstone)
Nexo Knights, along with Chima and to a certain degree Ninjago, look like—you know that episode where Homer Simpson designed his own car which ruined his brother's car company?
Yeah, it looks like that.
The question not raised is, will these be considered in line with the Castle theme? And no one can possibly dispute that Knights Kingdom was far worse than this. But time will tell.
If pokemon can get famous among kids I guess anything can. Even Nexo Knights.
Sheesh, what's with all the hate? I'm extremely excited for this theme. I was too with Chima, but these sets are already far better. The shield scanning ability is nice, there's at least 150 unique ones coming out, and they all go to an upcoming game.
it looks like a merge of classic space, castle and rock raiders.
I like the theme from the concepts side, but not the sets. The main drawback is: there probably won't be any historic castle sets until this is over. When I saw the fortress my first association were: they started it with a yellow castle, they end it with a blue castle'.
In last Chima magazine (which seems to be the last one), they also tell everything about Nexo Knights and also introduce the names of the knights. Apparently we get a Nexo Knights magazine in January/February
I like when people hate on the sets and then go 'stick to the basics like... .Friends and NinjaGo. I mean those had a rough start too, the third year of NinjaGo was supposed to the the last and it's still going and they are making a movie.
You can't tell if something will work until you try. Yes it's sad we won't have normal castle for awhile, but LEGO needed to try something new.
My only complaint is that all the vehicles are the same color. I like when NinjaGo does different colors. If they don't change that years of blue will get boring.
My nephew is very excited about this theme and I can see it being popular with kids no matter how much AFOLs poopoo it. It has nights and lasers, what else do kids like more?
^^^Maybe give the knights with their own color schemes vehicles with those color schemes?
Otherwise they're going to have to really get creative with the designs... and I don't think they are, giving that a fair handful of these sets are wholly lacking in originality. Take Merlok's Library 2.0: There's no Merlok, there's no Library, and it's basically just a tower with two useless walls that looks eerily like Mammoth's Frozen Stronghold. Although... that's mostly just from the useless, angled, and uselessly angled walls.
TheGreenBrickGiant, PicnicBasketSam,
I agree, it would be better with character colours on the vehicles. I do like the flying horse things, which have little details in their rider's colours.
^True, but the same could be said for the larger vehicles. Lance's Mecha Horse has a lot of white accents, and Clay's Rumble Blade has Dark Azur accents (since Bright Blue and Earth Blue are already default Nexo Knights colors). Even the King's Mech has gold accents that are absent from the other knight-affiliated vehicles. Still, it's a lot different from Ninjago where every main character has their own color scheme for their dragons and vehicles, or Chima where the color scheme varies by tribe.
Other than the hover-horses, we haven't really seen dedicated vehicles for the other knights. The Aero-Striker V1 and Knight Cycle in the Fortrex set is more affiliated with the Fortrex than with Aaron and Clay, in my eyes. But I'll bet if we do see dedicated vehicles for Macy and Aaron, they'll have red and green accents, just like their horses.
