Merlin acquires land in NY for third US LEGOLAND park

Posted by ,

Merlin has purchased land near Goshen, NY with the intention of building a third US LEGOLAND there.

Lohud is reporting that "Merlin Entertainments PLC, the company behind Legoland operations, confirmed the reports in a late-day statement, saying it "has an interest in land within the town of Goshen" and "would hope to bring an application to the Town Board for the re-zoning of the land in due course, as part of our aspiration to open a third LEGOLAND Park in North America."

Thanks to Aegis2000 for the news.

By in United States,

I hate the term 'upstate NY'. It's like 20 miles from NY. Upstate to me is the Lake George area. Just say 'NY state'.

By in United States,

Seems like a very odd location to build a park. The weather in New York is cold and miserable half the year...!

Interesting location. My grandparents lived in upstate NY, but way farther away from NYC and closer to Canada.

Wow, grew up 20 minutes from Goshen. There's a huge outlet shopping center, Woodbury Commons, near there too that caters to the NYC and tourist crowds.

By in United States,

This would be awesome, only 2.5 hours from us!

By in Sweden,

It may seem odd to build one that far north (weather-wise) but then again, the original one in Billund isn't located in any year-round tropical climate either, and it's closed for 4 1/2 months a year.

This news has made my year everyone...

It would be nice to have a Legoland in the center of the country instead of just on the coasts, since I live in Colorado.

By in Australia,

It would be nice to have one on the same continent as me.

By in Australia,

@Privatematrix: Seconded. I'm semi-seriously considering moving to the UK or the USA just because Australia gets shafted by so many companies.

Starik20X7: yes we may get shafted, but still, it's worth it to live in the best place on Earth. And lets be honest, once you go to one of the Lego theme parks, it's just a reminder that Lego is best displayed in doors, and not outside. Coupled with the fact that Merlin seem to do minimal maintenance on existing displays (how hard is it really to put a belt back on a pulley for the boats?). It's a thing you go to rarely. The stores, full retail and no VIP points.
Don't get me wrong, I've been to three LegoLands on three different continents, and while the displays are different, the same problems are across the world.

By in United States,

It would have been nice to see Virginia in the news as the newest location....New York is a tough place to drive to unless you live nearby. And the weather does stink much of the year like in Billund. But at least there are a lot of folks living in the NE who may find that it is much easier for them than a trip to Orlando.

It really would be even nicer if for once they would cover much of the new park (especially MINILAND) with roofs so that the bricks do not deteriorate quickly... like in the six existing parks. It is such a shame to see such fine builds destroyed immediately by Mother Nature, especially in Malaysia, California and Florida. Building a roof over those fascinating builds would be such an improvement for all and provide some shade during the summer, which is the major travel season in the US. And it could lengthen their season by keeping snow and rain off the builds. They do make roofs that allow some sun to shine through when needed, which would be very cool.

@legogal:

I live in upstate NY, and I have to agree with you that Virginia would have made a lot more sense. We already have a Discovery Center in Westchester (basically NYC, ~ 1 hr from Goshen), and another in Boston (1 hr more travel time than Goshen for anyone Albany or north). And the weather up here is not very park-friendly (and *especially* not waterpark-friendly) outside of the May-September timeframe. Virginia could almost double the duration of the season, while serving a currently under-served market, and still be within easy driving / flying distance of NYC, BOS, PHL, BWI and surrounding markets. Very odd location choice, indeed.
