BIONICLE comes to an end (again)
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has just announced on its website and Facebook that BIONICLE generation two has come to an end:
THE CONCLUSION OF “THE JOURNEY TO ONE” MARKS THE END FOR LEGO BIONICLE GENERATION 2
Fans, today we have to share the news with you that we have made the tough decision to discontinue LEGO BIONICLE at the end of 2016. NETFLIX has just started streaming the final two episodes of “The Journey to One” the ending of which will put an end to any speculation about the future of LEGO BIONICLE.
With the 2015 relaunch of LEGO BIONICLE, we set out to revive a childhood favorite of fans worldwide, and bring it to a new group of children who were too young to have known and played with LEGO BIONICLE Generation 1. From your wonderful feedback over the last year, we feel very proud to have performed that task. Currently, the last wave of LEGO BIONICLE products is launching in Europe and North America. These products will, however, not reach the shelves in Asia and the Pacific markets.
Next up is the #BIONICLEbuildmakuta Rebrick Contest, starting August 1st, that will give you a chance to compete for some unique prizes. All you have to do is to give us your best shot at the Evil Overlord himself. Through the rest of the year, we will keep sharing artwork and other things that may be of interest to you on LEGO.com/bionicle and facebook.com/LEGOBionicle
On behalf of the LEGO BIONICLE team we would like to say that it has been absolutely thrilling to work on a theme that evokes so much interest, dedication and emotion. We would like to thank you for taking in LEGO BIONICLE Generation 2 and sharing all your builds, stories, artwork, joy, criticism and praise. By doing so you have not only expanded the universe but also made the amazing BIONICLE Community even stronger and more amazing. We are confident that you will ensure that BIONICLE lives on.
The BIONICLE Team

I guess it's not entirely unexpected for many of you that are fans of the theme given the summer sets have had patchy distribution even in the regions they are supposed to be available. Presumably poor sales/unprofitability were to blame although we will of course never know.
The CCBS constraction system will live on, I am sure, in Star Wars buildable figures and maybe more.

Hopefully not too long until Bionicle Gen 3!
It's sad :/ I had high hopes for this, and would've loved to see what else they were planning to do. But all good things have to come to an end at some point I guess.
Bionicle will live on, not the sets but the theme sure will and I'll try to get all the sets that I wasn't able to get the past few years overtime.
Now let's see if Lego comes with something new and interesting, that I will be interested in and will start to collect now since Bionicle is/was actually one of the only themes I collect(ed).
Well, that was fast...
When they announced it, I was really looking forward to more awesome titan sets (I only collected those, they had a much more interesting build than the regular set).
I'm really sad they didn't make a single one...
Sadly I'm not surprised at all. BIONICLE didn't have what it takes to reboot into this year's target audiences like the old BIONICLE did. The fanbase expecting a resurge of nostalgia was let down and the younger generations simply weren't really interested. It was only a matter of time.
Not a shock at all. It was a bigger shock that the first gen ended when it seemed to be a hit. I have never seen Bionicle not on sale. I wonder if LEGO will continue with the action figure like line or just retire it all, besides the Star Wars related ones, for awhile.
This were very sad news. Lego needed another buildingsystem than the regular system. I thought Bionicle was here to stay but sadly not....
I remember back in 2001 when Gen 1 was new. It opened new doors, both for lego-fans and for the company itself. Bionicle was such a success so I think it is a bit odd that they are canceling it once again. Personally, I prefered the older system for CCBS but I think it is just nostalgia speaking, hehe!
Nevertheless, Lego Bionicle has inspired me and I will welcome it if it is ever to make a return!
@Zackula "Which will put an end to any speculation about the future of Lego Bionicle" it doesn't sound like there will be a generation 3
A real shame. But yeah, considering that I'm pretty sure I only ever saw maybe three Bionicle sets in stores that weren't the Lego Store...
No wonder. Boys today much more preffer Ninjago, Star Wars or even NExo Knights as story line theme. The fact that Journey to one wasn't even avaialble in some coutries don't help.
So sad, i loved bionicle gen 1 when i was little, i hope there will be a gen 3!
*Darth Vader* Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Never really got into the new Bionicle but it's sad news for the fans. Wonder if we will see a Black Panther figure.
I just read Dorek's open letter to the Fans about this. He talked about how he, the guy at BZpower, and you (Huw) heard this news at the Lego fan media event in Denmark. It gladdens me to know that Lego took their time to address the fan media sources, to prepare them for this.
Hoping the Legacy of Bionicle is remembered for a good time to come at future, especially the good it did for the company in the early 2000's.
Maybe we'll see hero factory back. The last 'invasion from below' with the minifigure sized heroes and their mechs was brilliant!
I think Lego might find it wise to branch out CCBS to other themes. I feel that Ninjago and perhaps Super Heroes (done accurately, like Star Wars has been) would be excellent options in keeping CCBS alive, as it's very clear that anything made in house by Lego simply doesn't catch on. It's rather unfortunate.
No big loss. I doubt we'll see Bionicle again for a very long time, it's clear it doesn't do well anymore. Those sets are always the first to go on clearance because all they are is shelf warmers.
Has constraction been selling well in general? I have been seeing full shelves of those sets. Is it possibly the end of constraction too?
Also, the end of the Bionicle reboot was sadly inevitable. The way they tried to gain an audiance at the very start was a poor idea. They should have made a Cartoon Network show rather than webisodes and a Netflix show.
I am not so much a fan of Bionicle however I do like the idea of being able to build a figure. As mentioned above by Penkid11 I wonder if they brought the system to other themes wether they would have more success. Are the Star Wars figures selling well? Have yet to buy one as I am not a Star Wars fan but have been tempted by General Grievous.
For everyone that wants Classic Space to come back, let this be a lesson. The same fate would befall it. Nostalgia is always a niche market.
Id love to see them to a CCBS line with the Nexo Knights, similar to what we got when Lego did the Knights Kingdom build able figures.
!???? Already?!!?!?!?!?!? KARABAST!!!!!!!!!!!
Welp, time to crawl in the Black Crater and cry.
I wonder if they will start another line of CCBS figures.. not as a sub-theme, like the Star Wars ones, but rather a new theme, like they did with HF. I enjoyed some of the HF sets, and actually really liked IFB.
@xboxtravis7992, yes that's right. We were privileged to see the last two episodes while in Billund in June, and then be told the news.
The Bionicle/CCBS team knew that it would come as a shock and blow to its legion of fans so went out of their way to prepare fan sites for the news, which of course affects BZ Power and BionicleSector01 readers more than the majority here. They are to be highly commended for that.
It's worth reading Aeden's post if you haven't already: http://biosector01.com/wiki/index.php/BIONICLEsector01:An_Open_Letter_to_BIONICLE_Fans
As one of the few people who unironically wants more Hero Factory, I'm half-glad about this. On one hand, yay, the weird overly technicy stuff was cancelled. On the other hand, this could potentially mean the end of constraction.
I'm really surprised that it lasted as long as it did. It seems like these sets have been sitting on sale or on clearance racks pretty much from the beginning. I get the impression that they are just not selling very well.
Unbelievable. I am, and always have been, a huge fan of LEGO. Their toys have brought so much to my life, even to this day. I was always fascinated by their multitude of wonderful themes, from Star Wars to Atlantis to Power Miners and Harry Potter, just to name a few. But above and beyond, my absolute favorite LEGO theme ever, was BIONICLE.
BIONICLE had a unique aesthetic, some wonderful sets, and an enthralling story that fascinates me to this day. It wasn't loved by everyone, something that disappoints me just a little, but I was so into the sets and story I didn't care. When the them ended in 2010, something seemed missing, not just from store shelves, but from me. Cut to 2015, the theme is rebooted and I love the sets more than ever. I got them whenever I could, and loved all of them. 2016 comes along, and everything is even better! BIONICLE gets its own TV show, more people like the sets, and they announce a Makuta building contest with a huge grand prize! They even show off their own sets for Makuta, the main villain of the theme, with several new molds to boot!
I was excited to buy Makuta and whatever other sets would come out next year, but this news has me saddened and just aggravated. WHY would you bother to show us an awesome set with new molds, functions, and colors, and even show it off in your cartoon, just to tell us NO MORE SETS ARE BEING RELEASED?!?!?! A multi-billion dollar company can't make just one more set to better conclude the line? Couldn't BIONICLE been advertised more, so more people would see it and buy their toys? I have seen far worse themes get more sets, advertising, and media than BIONICLE (cough cough Legends of Chima) yet do as bad if not worse!
I don't know. I feel slighted, after 4 years of mostly mediocre Hero Factory sets... 4 YEARS... we only get 2 of a vastly superior product line. It's hard for me to not have my nostalgia dictate my opinion, but even so, I love the new line disregarding the old sets! Heck, the 2015 Toa are my favorite Toa line in BIONICLE history, and I would have loved to see the line progress. Alas, it appears that's not going to work out. To those of you who never got or experienced the same feelings that BIONICLE has given to fans like me, I feel kind of bad for you. Oh well, here's hoping there's a silver lining to this... somewhere....
I feel like there is a small chance where it could do a ninjago. announce its retirement, come back a year later bad then get good the next year. Doubt it though.
Just came home from going out of my way of buying an Umarak the Destroyer. I did not expect to hear this this very day ...
@Millerman, Ninjago was a massive succes that was know to be only planned as a 3 year theme. The success caused them to extend it. I don't think the same can be said for gen 2 bionicle. It seems they planned for 3 years as well (3 legendary masks, one for each year...), but it is apparently not able to deliver to warrent another year.
I'm actually kind of glad we can finally say goodbye to Bionicle. It just got old after a very short amount of time. Okay, LEGO, now just don't make a Hero Factory Generation 2.
It just couldn't live up to the quality of the original Bionicle's storytelling.
I was sad when Bionicle first ended but the new series didn't capture my interest like it did when I was 5 or 6. I may just pick up Ekimu so I have something from this series.
That was really fast. But chances are something like this will return, just like last time.
On the one hand, I freely admit that I don't understand the love for Bionicle 1.0 (which is fine, I'm sure there are fans who don't love trains as much as I do), so I can imagine that probably caught Lego by surprise. I imagine that for Bionicle 2.0, they were hoping to catching lightning in a bottle *twice*, and it just didn't happen.
And it is a shame, because the sets this time around (what few lines there were) were so much better than the sets from last time. But yeah, give it a couple of years and it'll come back. Everything does.
^Zordboy then there are the true weirdos, those who like trains and Bionicle... like me!
If anything the cancellation of Bionicle means I have more money for the rumored Winter Train coming out this year. LookOnTheBrightSide
Dang it. Honestly, I agree with several other commenters in that it would just never have the charm of G1. RIP once again, BIONICLE.
Given that many of these sets can be found on clearance at various stores, I would have to assume they were not nearly as popular as they had hoped
A shame. The first wave was faaaaaantastic! Then it sort of dropped off a bit. But I just ordered Ekimu as a send off to the reboot of a line I absolutely adored as a child.
Sadly, this is of no surprise. While I was SO excited to see that BIONICLE was having a reboot (even if the story was different), and even more excited with all the teasers and easter eggs of the Mask of Time and the Nuva Symbols hidden throughout (I just realized a few days ago that the Mask of Creation has Nuva symbols along the crown's spires), I also knew that BIONICLE 2010 was felt like LEGO was kicking the BIONICLE fanbase in the butt. Seriously, six Agori, and calling them Heroes? Stars? THAT was the finally that BIONICLE deserved? With that, BIONICLE lost all hope of regaining its glory. And no reboot could truly fix that. Now I haven't seen the Netflix series, and I'm not going to come back to this article for fear of spoilers, but I really hope there's some sort of acknowledgement to the original series. Otherwise all those Easter Eggs were nothing more than a stunt to draw in the original (and dead) fanbase.
And yet they just launched a magazine for it. Strange timing.
@Xendor173, well spotted on the MoC, I didn't know that yet :)
Regarding the stars sets, I've heard they weren't even supposed to come out. The people at Lego had persuaded the higher-ups to bring out one more wave to actually give the theme an ending. Otherwise it would have just vanished. (But I fully agree those sets aren't the best).
I haven't seen the final Gen2 episodes yet, but I hope they give a decent ending that ties up everyting. Please don't leave too many plotholes!
Wow, that happened FAR faster than I expected. Maybe they couldn't hook enough new fans.
A real shame indeed. I thought that all of the waves up until Summer 2016 were pretty great.
I kind of saw this coming. I feel like it never captured the magic of the original Bionicle. The suddness and adbruptness of this ending is much worse then original though. At least that ending was sort of set up in the theme's last year, but they left some loose ends behind and released the stars sets out of nowhere. This one is ending not only in the middle of the story but in the middle of a release season.
I'm sure there will be a nearly identical theme within the next few years. Let's face it; Bionicle and Hero Factory were basically Magnum and Blue Steel.
noo!!

@TheOriginalSimonB A quarterly one, at that. I suspect Issue 2 will be the final one if this is true, but I think basically the LEGO Magazines (well, a number of these kids ones) are shared across countries in different guises - I believe this can be evidenced by the shared gifts. I could be wrong.
But back to the story - I'm kinda sad about this, though I only bought 3 Bionicle sets from this series. I just don't think it ever could hit like the Original did. With the original we'd had Slizers (and RoboRiders IIRC) building up to it, but the original Bionicle was just... something else. I loved it, as did many others. This new range reminds me of the end of Bionicle - a lot of ugly sets which seem all spindly and wobbly, and honestly I don't think the new ones look all that good. Except the first release of Gali this time. Not as good as the originals, but I love her a lot more than the second one they did.
well. this is lame... after Bionicle gen 1 ended... that was terrible. then hero factory came along... and it never really looked that great. but then... they announced Bionicle wave 2. that made me so happy I was reeeeeeeeeeeeeeealy looking forward to it... and then they kinda ruined it. using 99% hero factory parts... was basically handing us hero factory and calling it Bionicle. I had hope, though... when I saw the gearboxes... and then they made 24014, 24191, 19087, and brought back 85079, 61800, 64276, and 44817... and a few others. Onua's 19151 are definitely a nod to 47315. It looked like they were actually kinda trying to made Bionicle great again... but... alas, it appears that they have given up. and I don't expect them to make a G3. if they did, they'd have to lose about 50-70% of the hero factory parts, and make something... Bionicle. G2 is not Bionicle. that's probably 70% of the reason it never really took flight. the other 30% is probably the fact that LEGO stomped on the dreams of G1 fans saying, quite firmly, NO MORE BIONICLE..... and then they went naaaaaaaaaaaaaa jk we were just messin' with ya. here, have a hero factory with tahu's face taped onto it.
I got the whole first wave, and I just used them for MOCs. I barely ever Take sets apart for MOCs, but I didn't like Them that much. I was never really into bionicle G1, but I really liked Hero Factory, and these just felt like bad versions of those. I really didn't like the gears that moved the arms....it just made them feel to "bulky" and used a lot of parts. The second wave looked interesting with the skeletons, but there were just other sets that looked better. But I think it was bound to happen sometime, because the figures just felt.....boring and it was obviously a cash-grab.
Disappointing. I like others thought Gen 2 had one more year in it before the final curtain. The fact that it went from a 2-3 minute web series to a Netflix series was a very positive sign. I'm not bitter though. I have appreciated they way Lego treats Bionicle fans. They were as classy and adult about it this time as they were the first time around.
There were some highlights that I hope Lego might carry over to their next toyline. I loved that they brought back the gear-action. I also liked the skull theme in the Series 1 villains. (Don't be afraid to be scary, Lego) I also liked the animal theme. Not just anthropomorphic animals like Chima but full on animals.
I wasn't a 100% fan, but the sets I did get I enjoyed immensly. Play on, Lego. Play on.
