Review: 76070 Mighty Micros: Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday

The monstrous Doomsday is among the deadliest and best known of all DC villains but has never appeared in a LEGO set before. The release of 76070 Mighty Micros: Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday changes that, although the figure is highly stylised and I hope we will see a more traditional bigfig version in a future set.

This is also Wonder Woman's first appearance in a Mighty Micros set and she comes complete with her Invisible Jet while Doomsday rides an appropriately beefy monster truck. Both vehicles seem to match their drivers very nicely and exclusive characters are always welcome so I have high expectations for this offering which is priced at just £8.99 or $9.99.

Minifigures

Many superheroes have undergone numerous redesigns throughout their publication history but Wonder Woman has remained fairly consistent in her appearance, wearing a red bustier with a decorative golden breastplate as well as a metallic gold tiara, all of which appear on this minifigure. I like the detailed hair piece very much and it looks particularly impressive from the back where much of the textured detail is visible.

The head is printed with a grin and wide eyes which is consistent with other Mighty Micros figures, as is the use of short legs which allows Wonder Woman to stand in the cockpit of her jet. I think blue is an appropriate colour choice, although this is an example where dual-moulding would have been ideal. The figure is equipped with a pearl silver sword and a shield with a dark tan dish to form the boss. It would have been nice to see the printed shield from 76046 Heroes of Justice: Sky High Battle but the existing accessory is satisfactory.

76070 Mighty Micros: Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday

This Doomsday minifigure is instantly recognisable thanks to the light bluish grey skin tone and white spikes which have been a feature of the character since he made his debut in 1992. The recent interpretation from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice bears little resemblance to the comic book character and I am very pleased that this figure is based on the traditional design. He features a white beard and hair piece, both of which are new in this colour and match the protruding bones on both sides of his chest and head.

The torso features some muscle definition and a bronze belt which supports a pair of green trousers. These are torn above the knees in the comics so the entirely green legs look a little odd, although there is no better alternative without printing and this simple design is in keeping with the rest of the Mighty Micros range. Doomsday is armed with a reddish brown club which is brand new and exclusive in this colour.

The Completed Model

All the Mighty Micros models are based around four wheels, including flying vehicles such as Wonder Woman's Invisible Jet. Trans-clear pieces are used on each incarnation of the Invisible Jet with mixed success but I think this is a relatively impressive design as the wings and vertical stabiliser are completely translucent so come as close to being invisible as it is possible to achieve! The fuselage relies upon light bluish grey elements to form the main structure which is a bit of a shame. It would have been brilliant to see those pieces cast in trans-clear but this is an unrealistic expectation given the presence of several other components in new colours.

Wonder Woman can stand behind the control yoke and she introduces a lovely splash of colour to this otherwise monochromatic model when in place. It is worth noting that this set is an excellent source of trans-clear headlight bricks which have hitherto appeared exclusively in larger sets. Four are included and they are very useful pieces so I am glad to see them in such an inexpensive set.

76070 Mighty Micros: Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday

Doomsday drives a green and white monster truck into battle and this vehicle is decorated with spikes to match its owner so looks splendid. I like the radiator grille at the front and the exposed headlights are a welcome inclusion, as are the tooth components which are used in green for the first time on either side of the cockpit. There is room for Doomsday to stand behind the steering wheel inside and I was pleasantly surprised to find that his arms are not restricted by the spikes as I had expected they might be.

The truck looks even more intimidating from the rear where two enormous afterburners emit trans-orange flames. These are mounted at an angle so do not interfere with the aerodynamics of the vehicle and a large bone is also clipped to the back to represent a bumper, This can be removed and used as another of Doomsday's weapons if you wish but it looks great when fixed in place as these bony details suit the driver perfectly. This vehicle, like that of Wonder Woman, looks far more impressive with the minifigure in place and this is shown towards the end of the review.

Overall

The Mighty Micros sets are quite varied in their quality and I think this is one of the stronger ones, featuring two excellent minifigures and decent vehicles which reflect the character of their respective drivers. It is nice to see an exclusive character in the form of Doomsday and I think the character has been rendered very effectively, although his comical expression does limit the versatility of the figure.

76070 Mighty Micros: Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday

I certainly recommend this set to fans of Wonder Woman and Doomsday but this entire wave is overshadowed by the exceptional 76072 Mighty Micros: Iron Man vs. Thanos which we reviewed a couple of weeks ago and is perhaps the best Mighty Micros set to date. Nevertheless, 76070 Mighty Micros: Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday is a worthy purchase in my opinion.

The new Doomsday minifigure reminds me of the Brute Tartarus from the Halo games ( http://www.halopedia.org/tartarus ) - might have to pick up this set just for him. Great review!

Wonder Woman's hair piece is fabulous. It's the star of this set.

Doomsday's hair piece has me imagining a reality that will never be. We have so many Friends horses that are the same color, and it's always bothered me. (The last wave of Horse sets *did* introduce some welcome new paint jobs for the horses.) Wouldn't it be wonderful if this headpiece could be used as an interchangeable horse tail (and an interchangeable mane could have been developed)?

It's amazing how much the figures add to the vehicles. I thought both were really underwhelming, but they look really good in the final picture.

I've only bought Mighty Micros for my young relatives as gifts, but I'm really getting tempted by them them. They are fun sets.

Nice review! Useful to see that the Doomsday car includes those tooth pieces in green; I can think of a few uses for those, and Wonder Woman's invisible plane car is great!

@ericjohn: You never know—it's possible that the Lego Friends horse might be updated at some point, possibly with that sort of customization potential. Don't forget that it was only a few years ago that the classic Lego horse was updated to a more articulated variety after over 20 years! Lego Friends is still a relatively new theme, so going forward I wouldn't necessarily rule anything out.

Thanks for the review. I had my sights set on this one.

I really like this one. I think the light grey works behind the clear bricks - it's the odd white bricks that stand out too much for my liking.

That club came in 76231 as a torch for Satipo, so it isn't new or exclusive. Still a very nice piece though!

@BruseIsBored - It has appeared in several sets in dark brown or orange but never before in reddish brown.
