Review: 60146 Stunt Truck

The Great Vehicles sets are among the annual highlights of the LEGO City range, offering a wide variety of different models at relatively low price points. 60146 Stunt Truck is one of the smallest released this year but attracted me based on its unusual colour scheme and the inclusion of the brand new mudguard element.

I was very impressed by 60113 Rally Car last year and hope this set will be similarly satisfying. It looks splendid, includes a great selection of rare pieces and appears to offer good value at a price of £7.99 in the UK or $9.99 in the US so is worthy of consideration in my opinion.

Minifigure

The driver wears a bright racing uniform which matches the orange, black and white colour scheme of the truck. This torso has appeared once before in 60085 4x4 with Powerboat and features Xtreme branding on the front and back while the head is equally rare, having only been seen in 60134 Fun in the Park - City People Pack previously.

60146 Stunt Truck

I would have liked to see the Xtreme logo printed on the crash helmet but it is left blank instead and features an opening visor, as usual. The minifigure is fairly standard fare for a City set but it is pleasing to see some relatively uncommon components included and I like the sharp contrast of the colour scheme.

The Completed Model

The stunt truck is reasonably large considering the cost of the set, measuring a little over 12cm in length and with substantial ground clearance for driving across rough terrain. These wheels are well suited to the size of the vehicle and the rear is elevated a plate higher than that the front end, giving the entire model a slight forward rake which gives the impression of speed.

I like the bullbar assembly on the front and this is punctuated by four yellow and white headlights which are realistically arranged in two rows. The bonnet is decorated with a racing sticker and includes a black air scoop, represented by a 2x2 curved slope, which offers an effective contrast against the orange bodywork. The new mudguards are perfect for this rugged vehicle and are much more versatile than previous elements. Each one is attached by the width of a single 1x2 plate so occupies less room than the older mudguards which require the space of a 1x2 brick.

This new element has allowed the designer to incorporate shock absorbers which are visible above the tyres. Unfortunately the axles are fixed but the suspension looks very realistic and I think the use of megaphone pieces is inspired! Red is a suitably ostentatious colour and I hope we will see similar details in many future sets, although it would be even better if real suspension could be included. I wonder whether the rubber 2M damper might be appropriate for such a task.

The sides of the truck are decorated with some more racing decals and this continues onto the roof of the cab where the Xtreme logo appears. Removing the roof reveals the steering wheel and room for the driver to sit. His view is partially blocked by the air intake on the bonnet but he fits in comfortably.

The enormous wing at the back is decorated with another sticker and two raised grille elements, perhaps representing end plates. This is mounted on hinges so its angle can be adjusted for different kinds of jumps, just as it would be in reality.

The eighth and final sticker is used for the number plate at the back and this is fitted between two more lights and a pair of large exhausts. This angle offers my least favourite view of the model as the blocky rear axle is left visible but the forward rake ensures that it cannot be seen from the front or sides so this does not bother me too much.

Overall

Small City sets are often criticised for offering very little innovation but I think 60146 Stunt Truck defies that trend. Certain aspects of its design recall 60055 Monster Truck and 60027 Monster Truck Transporter but the improvements are significant and this is easily my favourite model of its kind to date.

Not only is it highly detailed in relation to its size and price but a number of new pieces are included, most notable of which are the mudguards. Furthermore, the model is very sturdy so provides considerable play value and I highly recommend it for that purpose or as an addition to a city display.

Nice review. Love the enthusiasm. The truck looks cool. I also would have liked an actual suspension like the Ford Raptor from Speed Champions but other than that it's a nice little piece!

Looks good but think I still prefer 6641-1!!! Can see similarities in style though - I do agree that the new wave of small vehicles are getting better and better!!! Like the look of 60145 buggy too!

By in Puerto Rico,

I wasn't considering this set but I may now get it down the line as a gift to my father.

Could not figure out what you meant by mud guards....then it dawned on me. Fenders!

This set is on my wish list. Great price point, and will go nicely with last year's off road truck.

Really nice car (I'd have been all over this when I was a kid!), and a good detailed review.

Love those new mudguards! I'll keep an eye out for this one.

BTW, I think you meant the rear axle is one plate LOWER than the front, as this would give the forward lean you mention.

I always like the new car ones but I had a thought. One I've had for years now. Why not LEGO make two of these cars? Same vehicle, different styles and decals. lol

By in Australia,

I bought this one to go along with the red and green monster trucks that came out a couple of years ago, and this one compliments those with the lovely orange/white colour scheme.

The one thing that annoys me about this year's town offerings are the stickers. It seems like they're a bit out of control, this year. So I've taken to just not even putting them on (I hate stickers. I'm not coordinated enough to put them on right the first time, and you can't peel them off and redo 'cause that just wrecks the whole thing and it looks ghastly).

By in France,

My son got this as a gift this week. He's 5, and this is the first set he built completely unaided which made him (and me) very proud! It's an excellent model with only the rear view looking a bit sub par.

Picked 2 of these up Wednesday just gone its a shame Lego insists on pretty much covering every available surface in a sticker, Still I only bought mine so I would have a quartet of those fantastic new wheel arches in 2 different colours.

When given a choice between this and 60145-1: Buggy, The Boy rightly chose the latter to spend his pocket money on. ;o)

This may be a strong contender for an 'impulse' purchase.

My son got this as his very first "big boy" lego set (he's 3). He loves it! I love the use of megaphones for suspension. Fun, small set.

I have this set and I'm a fan. Only thing I don't care much for is the wheel color choice. Nice review.

Not something I'd buy but the parts usage is great here.

By in United States,

Almost snagged this the other day, but opted for the new 60145 Buggy kit. Looks like I need to head back to the store today.
