Ideas Test Lab - Fourth Build Challenge

Posted by ,

Starting on 1st February, there are the four LEGO Creator 3-in-1 sets that will be used in the upcoming Fourth Build Challenge in the new LEGO Ideas Test Lab.

The four Creator sets are:

  • 31042 Super Soarer
  • 31056 Green Cruiser
  • 31057 Air Blazer
  • 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs

I have created four LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) files that have the parts from these sets laid out on the base plate. I have included the spare parts that came in the four boxes.

Read on to find out more about this exciting new experiment being developed under the Ideas Test Lab and links to the files.

One of the issues with this experimental phase of LEGO Ideas Test Lab is that LEGO Digital Designer is that for new parts, LDD must be used in LDD Extended mode where all parts are coloured red. You can then recolour the parts as you want.

In the Community Round-Up Post #1, Tim Courtney - LEGO moderator, states that "you can either build your digital models without the missing parts, or use a third-party virtual building program (such as LDraw/MLCad, BrickSmith for Mac users, or the browser-based Mecabricks)."

You can always build your Fourth Build using real bricks and then take really good images. Using LDD will enable you to build digitally.

Some people will also be able to download these LDD files and then convert them to LDraw/MLCad, BrickSmith or Mecabricks file formats.

This set is the most innovative of the four Creator sets selected for Ideas Test Lab and it therefore has the largest number of parts that need to be re-coloured in LDD Extended.

By in New Zealand,

I'm getting physical - tomorrow I'm picking up all but 31058 and doing the challenge (whatever it may be) straight out of the box with no prep or preconceptions. Should be a bit of a giggle!

I get the feeling it'll be along the lines of "Build something completely different" - no flying craft from Super Soarer, for example. You have to wonder how much of this Test Lab experiment is gearing towards a structure that helps LEGO to hunt down creative types to operate as "consultants".

As I've said before ... cautiously optimistic! :-D

By in Italy,

The color should be no problem, just switch to Extended Mode and use all colors on all bricks.

Looking forward to this but unfortunately Argos only stock 3 of the 4 sets for these challenges, Which is annoying.

By in Australia,

The following pieces are actually available in extended mode in version 4.3.10:
Plate 1x2 w. 2 shafts 3.2
Cross axle 2m w. snap w. fric.
Turn plate 2x2, lower part
Turn plate 2x2, upper part
Plate 2x2 inverted w. 2 snap
Ball Cup High Friction W. Rubber
Horn W. Shaft Ø 3.2
Brick 1X2X1 2/3 W/4 Knobs
So it is just the 'Brick 1X1, W/ 2 Knobs, Corner' that is missing. Hope that helps everyone!

As mentioned by Jazlecraz above, you can find all the bricks in LDD less the 1x1 with two knobs. Sometimes you have to rotate the item in the parts list to see if it's the right one - especially for example the 2x2 inverted tile with 2x connectors

By in New Zealand,

I will check the Mecabricks part library tomorrow and I will make sure that all the parts are available there.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have found all the parts except 1x1 with two knobs and re-edited the article so that it makes more sense now.

The LDD files have been updated and new links made.

By in United States,

Thank you for those files!

This past weekend I picked up Super Soarer (on sale even! $6.97) and played around with an alternative build. I got one that's fairly decent just need to take pix and submit after tomorrow. I ended up using all but 3 pieces. Very fun challenge to purchase something I normally wouldn't and get to play around, having the limitation of just that set was really fun! I was going to get the dinosaur set but it was sold out EVERYWHERE.
